Agenda for the May 11th Pocahontas Board of Education Meeting

The Pocahontas County Board of Education will hold a Local School Improvement Council meeting at 4 p.m. on Tuesday, May 11, 2021 at the Hillsboro Elementary School. This will be followed immediately afterwards at that school by their regular board meeting. In-person public attendance will be limited. The agenda for the regular meeting is as follows.

Following regular opening procedures and items, the board will hear from any public delegations wishing to express their opinions to the board members.

Superintendent Beam will deliver his report and any special recognitions to the board.

Informational reports will be made by Alan Gibson, the Student Representative and by Ruth Bland who will deliver an update on the Multicultural Plan.

Following the board’s approval of routine financial matters, the board members will approve the Pocahontas County Schools 2021-2022 Budget, including the Food Service Budget and the Step VII Budget.

The board will then take up the following miscellaneous matters:

  • They will consider approval to amend the School Building Authority’s grant award # 2000002100 to extend the expiration date from June 30, 2021 to December 31, 2021.
  • They will consider approval of a Memorandum of Understanding with the MIT Noyce Fellowships Project relating to Jennifer Nail-Cook as the Cohort 1, in supporting improvement in the Mathematics teaching and learning as the second year of the 5-year program to be revisited and approved each subsequent year from August 2021 to July 2022.
  • They will consider Approval to change the three week out-of-season athletic practice dates for the 2021-2022 season from June 14, 2021 – July 02, 2021 to now reflect July 05, 2021 – July 23, 2021, per WVSSAC announcement.
  • Approval of the adoption of English/Language Arts instructional materials for the Pocahontas County Schools for the 2021-2027 school years.
  • Approval of Pocahontas County Flat-Fee Supplement for principals for the 2021 -2022 school year, based on programmatic formula.
  • Approval to pay Carolina Industrial Trucks for a 2018 Hyundai 24” Fork Lift for CTE programs, $12,000.00, plus out-of-state tax and/or shipping fees.
  • Approval of Superintendent’s evaluation and the 2021-2022 goals.
  • The board members will review the school Re-entry plan and consider any recommended changes or revisions to it.
  • They will then consider approval of the recommended service and professional recommended personnel actions.

The board members will then hold a Matters of the Board discussion prior to adjourning the meeting.

Tim is the WVMR News Reporter. Tim is a native of Maryland who started coming to Pocahontas County in the 1970’s as a caver. He bought land on Droop Mountain off Jacox Road in 1976 and built a small house there in the early 80’s. While still working in Maryland, Tim spent much time at his place which is located on the Friars Hole Cave Preserve. Retiring in 2011 as a Lieutenant with the Anne Arundel County Police Department in Maryland, Tim finally took the plunge and moved from Maryland to his real home on Droop Mountain. He began working as the Pocahontas County Reporter for Allegheny Mountain Radio in January of 2015.
