4H sign-ups continue throughout the year for both students and volunteers. If you’ve been signed up before, it’s a new year and now’s a good time to get your re-enrollment completed so you don’t miss out on any opportunities!

One of the recent easement highlights was secured last month when landowners partnered with Shenandoah Valley Conservancy to protect an extensive section of Devil’s Backbone, the iconic ridge in the Allegheny Highlands in Highland
County, with a conservation easement.

Our conversation with Zoe McGee, Program Coordinator for The Nature Conservancy’s Allegheny Highlands Program to talk more about work in our region as well as the Allegheny Highlands Beer, brewed by Fine Creek Brewing in Powhatan using wild sassafras leaves from the Warm Springs Mountain Preserve in Bath County.

Highland County’s updated popular Barn Quilt Trail includes 80 barn quilts to explore.

Public comment brought rules of order into question as well as the need for the commonwealth attorney to go full time. The need of the board to interject in a compensation board decision was also discussed.

The mountain community’s fall festival returns with family fun October 11-13.

Carly’s term will run October 1, 2024 to December 31, 2027.

Take in the beautiful scenery, community events, and scrumptious food of the Hands & Harvest Festival, and then wrap up your day with a great evening of music with Larnell Starkey & the Spiritual Seven on Saturday, October 12 at 4 p.m. in the Highland Center.

The Highland County Public Library is partnering with the Highland County Department of Social Services for the 3D Printing with Dad event on October 8. Several other programs for families are also in the works. Snacks will be provided during the event.

Updates from the EDA board provided information about grants and their use to bolster the community.

Sargent Danny Hull gives us an update on training in North Carolina. Plans to deputize Carly on October 1 are in the works.
