POCAHONTAS COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Pocahontas County Warriors girls’ varsity basketball team improved their record to 5-2 with a win against Sherman Tide 58-32 on Saturday December 28th. The girls JV team also picked a win in the early game winning 55-33 to remain undefeated at 4-0.

BATH COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Bath County Chargers boys’ varsity basketball team got back on the winning track with a win against Meadow Bridge WV 59-21 on Thursday December 26th at home. Issac Ingram scored 29 points for Bath with Luke Turner and Dillan Royer adding six points apiece. The Chargers improved their record to 2-6.

The Chargers girls’ varsity basketball team defeated previously undefeated Meadow Bridge WV 43-30 on December 26th in a home game to move their record to 3-2. Trinity Forbes led Bath with 14 points, Addie Lockridge added 11, and Ryleigh Phillips had nine.

The Chargers boys wrestling team placed third out of eight teams in the Agie Skeens Memorial Tournament on Saturday December 28th hosted by Grundy High School. A.J. Woodson won the 150-pound title for Bath going 2-0 and winning by a pin in the last bout. Ethan Bryant placed second at 165-pound weight class, Caleb Harrison at 106-pounds and Paxton Rivenbark at 144-pounds placed third. Azi Tyson at 215-pounds and Tyler Shaver at 285-pounds placed fourth while Landon Rexrode at 175-pounds placed sixth.

TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES

UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

The University of Virginia Cavaliers women’s basketball team lost to #3 Notre Dame 95-54 on December 29th in South Bend, IN moving Virginia’s record to 8-6. Kymore Johnson scored 12 points and Breona Hurd added 10 to pace the Cavaliers.

The men’s basketball team hosted NC State on December 31st winning 70-67 improving their record to 8-5. Elijah Saunders led the Cavaliers with 22 points and Isaac McKneely added 14.

WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY

The West Virginia Mountaineers men’s basketball team upset #7 Kansas at Kansas 62-61 on December 31st, moving their record to 10-2. Eduardo Andre led West Virginia with 15 points and Javon Small added 13 points and 11 rebounds.

The #18 women’s basketball team hosted UCF on January 1st winning 80-58 moving their record to 11-2. The Mountaineers were led by J.J. Quinerly, who scored 31 points. Sydney Shaw added 19 points.

JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY

The James Madison Dukes men’s basketball team defeated Midway University 96-64 on December 29th at home, improving their record to 7-6. Eddie Ricks III and Bryce Lindsay scored 13 points apiece to lead a balanced scoring attack for the Dukes. Elijah Hutchins-Everett and A.J. Smith added 12 each.

The women’s basketball team beat Troy 63-52 at home on December 29th, improving their record to 9-4. Peyton McDaniel led James Madison with 14 points.

VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY

The Virginia Tech Hokies men’s basketball team hit the road to face #4 Duke on December 31st losing 88-65 dropping their record to 5-8. Tobi Lawal led Virgina Tech with 19 points.

VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE

The Virginia Military Keydets men’s basketball team lost to East Tennessee State 84-69 on the road on January 1st dropping their record to 6-8 for the season. Rickey Bradley, Jr and Linus Holmstrom led VMI with 14 points apiece and T.J. Johnson and Augustinas Kiudulas added 13 each.

While he did not grow up here, he spent as much time as possible on the family farm, and eventually moved to Highland to continue the tradition, which he still pursues with his cousin. Unfortunately, farming doesn’t pay all the bills, so he has previously taken other jobs to support his farming hobby, including pressman/writer for The Recorder, and Ag Projects Coordinator for The Highland Center.
