POCAHONTAS COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Warriors girls’ varsity basketball team lost a close one on Dec 28th to Petersburg 42-40 dropping their record to 2-3. Riley Pollack, Shayla Bennett, and M. Taylor led Pocahontas with eight points each.

BATH COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Chargers varsity boys’ basketball team picked up a win against Meadow Bridge, WV on Friday night Dec 29th 68-50 at home moving their record to 5-6. Four Chargers scored in double figures with Andrew Turner scoring 17 points, Luke Turner had 15, Issac Ingram scored 13, and Wyatt Campbell had 11. Frankie DeBoe just missed with nine points.

The boys’ JV basketball team beat Meadow Bridge, WV on Dec 29th at home 28-22 improving their record to 2-6. Tommy Burke led Bath County with 13 points and Jake Boguess added 10.

The girls’ JV basketball team earned a win against Meadow Bridge at home on Dec 29th winning 16-12. The girls currently stand at 3-3.

HIGHLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Rams boys’ varsity basketball team lost to Union Educational Tuesday night Jan 2nd in Mount Vernon, WV 42-20 dropping their record to 3-4. John Wagner and Greg Meehan both scored six points for Highland and Zach Armstrong added three. Wagner had seven rebounds and three blocks. Eli Moore had three blocks and Armstrong contributed two assists and three steals.

The girls’ varsity basketball team ran into a buzzsaw against Union Educational Tuesday night Jan 2nd in an away match losing 61-10 dropping their record to 0-5. Colleen Adams scored four points for the Rams with Hannah Meyerhoeffer and Zalea Good adding three points each. Adams had two rebounds and two steals, Meyerhoeffer had two steals and Good had two rebounds.

TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES

VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE

The Virginia Military Keydets men’s wrestling team participated in the Soldier Salute on Dec 29-30 in Coralville, IA. The tournament featured teams from around the country including Iowa, Navy, Minnesota, Nebraska in addition to VMI. For VMI Tyler Mousaw placed eighth at 285 pounds, Dyson Dunham placed third at 133 pounds, Ryan Vigil placed third at 149 pounds, and Josh Evans took third at 197 pounds.

JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY

The James Madison Dukes men’s basketball team beat Texas State at home on Dec 30th 89-75 to remain undefeated at 13-0. The Dukes were led in scoring by T.J. Bickerstaff who had 21 points and 10 rebounds. Terrence Edwards, Jr. added 17 points.

The women’s basketball team earned a win against ULM in Monroe, LA on Dec 30th 85-79 moving their record to 9-4. Four JMU players scored in double figures led by Jamia Hazell with 25 points.

UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

The Virginia Cavaliers men’s basketball team lost to Notre Dame in South Bend, IN Saturday 76-54 dropping their record to 10-3. Reece Beekman led Virginia with 15 points.

The men’s wrestling team participated in the 59th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships on Dec 29-30 in Hoffman Estates, IL. For Virginia Justin McCoy lost in the semi-finals at 174 pounds and Marlon Yarbrough lost the quarter-final match at 133 pounds. Virginia’s wrestling team then participated in the Southern Scuffle on Jan 1-2. Gavin Cagle placed eighth in the 157-pound class.

The women’s basketball team hosted #3 NC State on Dec 31st losing 72-61 dropping their record to 8-4. Camryn Taylor led the Cavaliers with 17 points and 15 rebounds. Kymora Johnson and Olivia McGhee added 11 points each.

WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY

The West Virginia Mountaineers football team ended their season with a 30-10 victory over the North Carolina Tarheels on Dec 27th in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl in Charlotte, NC. West Virginia ended their season at 9-4. Garrett Greene completed 12-of-23 passes for 228 yards and one touchdown plus rushed 64 yards on nine carries to lead West Virginia. Traylon Ray contributed 91 receiving yards and one touchdown.

The men’s basketball team traveled to Cleveland, OH to play Ohio State, losing 78-75 on Dec 30th dropping their record to 5-8. Three Mountaineers scored in double figures led by RaeQuan Battle with 24 points and 10 rebounds.

The men’s wrestling team participated in the 59th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships on Dec 29-30 in Hoffman Estates, IL. West Virginia placed third overall. Jordan Titus won the 141-pound championship for West Virginia with Peyton Hall, Ty Watters, and Brody Conley placing in the top five.

The women’s basketball team traveled to Lawrence, KS to play Kansas on Dec 30th, winning 85-60 to remain undefeated at 12-0. Four players scored in double figures for the Mountaineers led by Jordan Harrison with 21 points. Kyah Watson contributed 11 rebounds.

VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY

The Virginia Tech Hokies upset the #23 Tulane Green Wave 41-20 in the Military Bowl in Annapolis, MD on Dec 27th to end their season on a positive note at 7-6. Kyron Jones, of Virginia Tech, went 13-of-21 passing for 91 yards and two touchdowns and added 20 carries for 176 yards and another touchdown for good measure. Bhayshul Tuten contributed 136 yards rushing on 18 carries and two touchdowns.

The men’s basketball team traveled to Winston-Salem, NC to play Wake Forest on Dec 30th, losing 86-63 dropping their record to 9-4. Hunter Cattoor and Lynn Kidd scored 14 points apiece to lead the Hokies.

The men’s wrestling team participated in the 59th Annual Ken Kraft Midlands Championships on Dec 29-30 in Hoffman Estates, IL. For the Mountaineers three wrestlers lost in the semi-finals with Cooper Flynn at 125 pounds, Tom Crook at 141 pounds, Andy Smith at 197 pounds. In the quarterfinals six wrestlers lost with Sam Latona at 133 pounds, Mac Church at 141 pounds, Rafael Hipolito at 165 pounds, Cody Howard at 184 pounds, Sonny Sasso at 197 pounds, and Jimmy Mullen at 285 pounds. On Jan 2nd the Hokies wrestled #3 Missouri in Columbia, MO losing a close match 22-17. Virginia Tech won five matches with Flynn, Cook, Caleb Henson, Bryce Andonian, and Mekhi Lewis earning wins. Virginia Tech fell to 3-2 with the loss.

The #14 women’s basketball team beat Pitt at home on Dec 31st 91-41 moving their record to 10-2. Six Virginia Tech players scored in double figures led by Georgia Amoore with 20 points and Matilda Ekh with 16 points. Olivia Summiel contributed 11 rebounds.

LIBERTY UNIVERSITY

The Liberty Flames men’s basketball team traveled to Birmingham, AL to play Alabama on Dec 30th, losing 101-56. Kaden Metheny scored 14 points and Zach Cleveland had 13 points to lead Liberty. On Jan 1st Liberty hosted Boyce winning 88-46 improving their record to 11-4. Brody Peebles scored 25 points and Ben Southerland grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Flames.

The women’s basketball team hosted Tennessee on Dec 31st, losing 90-55 dropping their record to 5-10. Emma Hess scored 12 points and Asia Boone chipped in with 11 points to lead the Lady Flames.

The #23 Liberty Flames football team met their match when facing the #8 Oregon Ducks in the Vrbo Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, AZ on January 1st losing 45-6. After scoring first during the first quarter Liberty just could not handle the onslaught from the Ducks. Kaidon Salter went 15-of-24 through the air for 126 yards and one touchdown for the Flames. Liberty finished their season at 13-1.

While he did not grow up here, he spent as much time as possible on the family farm, and eventually moved to Highland to continue the tradition, which he still pursues with his cousin. Unfortunately, farming doesn’t pay all the bills, so he has previously taken other jobs to support his farming hobby, including pressman/writer for The Recorder, and Ag Projects Coordinator for The Highland Center.
