POCAHONTAS COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Pocahontas County Warriors girls’ varsity basketball team beat Sherman 64-48 on Saturday January 3rd to remain undefeated at 6-0. Allyson Taylor led with 20 points and 14 rebounds, followed by Calli Propst’s 18 points and 10 rebounds. Alexis Arbogast scored 10 points with four assists, while Chloe Annett added eight points and four rebounds. Shayla Bennett and Savana Sharp contributed five and three points, respectively. The Warriors JV team also won, 16-8, bringing their record to 1-1.
The Warriors boys’ varsity basketball team lost a pair of games this past week losing to Pendleton County 64-44 at home on Monday January 5th and losing to Craig County 65-53 on Tuesday January 6th dropping their record to 0-4.
HIGHLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Highland County Rams boys’ varsity and girls’ varsity basketball teams hosted Parry McCluer Tuesday January 6th with the Rams boys losing 74-25 for their first loss of the season at 1-1 in the Pioneer District, 7-1 overall. Patton Hull led the Rams with 10 points and Preston Jaccard had nine. The Rams girls lost 56-20 dropping their record to 0-2 in the Pioneer District, 2-5 overall. Colleen Adams led the Lady Rams with 11 points while Adelaide Baxter had five.
The Rams middle school basketball team hosted Union Educational on Monday January 5th in a mixed game. The Rams boys played the first half, shutting out their opponent 10-0. Colton Lightner and Landon Lightner each had three points for the Rams, while Caynen Sampson and Jayden Serrett each had two points. The Rams girls won the second half 9-7 with Caston Lightner scoring four points, Ashlyn Smith had three and Ida Farrell scored two.
The Rams girls’ varsity basketball team lost to Meadow Bridge 41-39 on Saturday, January 3rd. Colleen Adams scored 16 points, Makynley Smith added 12 with four three-pointers, Anna Meehan had five, Adelaide Baxter four, and Brooke Williams two. Williams also grabbed five rebounds, while Baxter had two steals.
The Rams boys’ and girls’ varsity and boys middle school basketball teams went on the road to face Paw Paw WV with the Rams boys’ varsity defeating Paw Paw 41-40. Zach Armstrong led the Rams with 17 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists. Elijah Good had 12 points and 14 rebounds, Hull had nine points, and eight rebounds and Jaccard had three points. The Rams girls’ varsity lost to Paw Paw 46-38. Adams led the Lady Rams with 20 points, Brooke Williams had five, Makynley Smith added four, Amelia Good had three and Baxter and Anna Meehan each scored two points. Good also grabbed 13 rebounds, while Williams had 12 boards and Baxter had seven steals and three assists. The Rams boys middle school team lost to Paw Paw 36-26 dropping their record to 1-4. Landon Lightner scored 11 points for Highland, Creed Good had six, Abram Lockridge scored three while Sampson, George Summers and Serrett each scored two points.
BATH COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Bath County Chargers’ girls’ varsity and boys’ varsity basketball teams hosted Narrows on Monday January 5th with the Chargers girls losing 62-32 dropping their record to 1-1 in the Pioneer, 3-5 overall. Trinity Forbes led the Chargers girls with 14 points, Addie Lockridge had eight, Cassie Thompson added six and Bre Mabe scored four. The Chargers boys’ varsity lost 70-27 dropping their record to 0-3 in the Pioneer, 2-6 overall. Nate Turner scored 10 points to lead Bath, Tommy Burke and Luke Turner each scored five, Miguel Rosado had three and both Michal Keyes and Bryer Nicely each had two.
The Chargers wrestling team finished fourth at the Agie Skeens Memorial Tournament, hosted by Grundy High School on Saturday January 3rd. Finalists were Jeremy Burns (144), A.J. Woodson (157), and Ethan Bryant (165). Emily Robertson (126), Azi Tyson (215), and Tyler Shaver (285) placed third; Easton Roberts (120) and Jesse Perry (150) took fourth, and Harris Ellis (132) was fifth.
The Chargers boys’ varsity basketball team lost to Eastern Montgomery 60-27 on the road on Saturday January 3rd dropping their record to 0-2 in the Pioneer. 2-5 overall. Nate Turner led the Chargers with 15 points, Luke Turner had seven, Keyes had three and Rosado added two.
TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES
UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA
The University of Virginia #21 ranked men’s basketball team split a pair of road games this past week losing to Virginia Tech 95-85 in triple overtime on December 31st and defeating NC State 76-61 on January 3rd moving their record to 12-2. Against Virginia Tech Malik Thomnas and Thijs De Ridder led Virginia with 26 and 22 points respectively with De Ridder adding 13 rebounds. Against NC State Sam Lewis led the Cavaliers with 23 points and four players scored double figures.
The men’s wrestling team participated in the Southern Scuffle in Tennessee on January 3-4 finishing in 13th place with three individual UVA grapplers claiming spots on the podium.
The women’s basketball team picked up a pair of conference wins this past week defeating Clemson 73-63 at home on January 1st and Florida State 91-87 in overtime on the road on January 4th raising their record to 12-3. Against Clemson Tabitha Amanze scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds while S’Myah Smith had 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead Virginia. Against Florida State Kymore Johnson scored 31 points and had 11assists to lead UVA. Paris Clark added 22 points.
WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY
The West Virginia Mountaineers men’s basketball team split a pair of games this past week, losing to #3 ranked Iowa State 80-59 on the road on January 2nd and defeating Cincinnati 62-60 at home on January 6th, moving their record to 10-5. Against Iowa State Chance Moore led the Mountaineers with 17 points. Against Cincinnati Honor Huff led West Virginia with 24 points.
The women’s basketball team picked up a pair of wins on the road this past week defeating Kansas 79-72 on January 1st and Kansas State 60-58 on January 4th improving their record to 13-2. Against Kansas Gia Cooke led West Virginia with 24 points. Against Kansas State Kierra Wheeler led the Mountaineers with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY
The James Madison Dukes men’s basketball team improved their record to 8-7 with a win against Arkansas State 78-74 on the road on January 3rd. Cliff Davis and Justin McBride scored 24 points and 21 points respectively to lead JMU.
The women’s basketball team won twice at home this past week defeating Georgia State 84-64 on January 1st and Texas State 87-52 on January 3rd to improve their record to 11-5. Against Georgia State Zakiya Stephenson scored 22 points while Ashanti Barnes had 16 points and 11 rebounds to lead JMU. Against Texas State Peyton McDaniel scored 19 points and Stephenson added 18 to lead James Madison.
VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY
The Virginia Tech Hokies men’s basketball team defeated #21 Virginia 95-85 in triple overtime at home on December 31st and lost to Wake Forest 81-78 on the road on January 3rd moving their record to 12-3. Against Virginia Amani Hansberry, Christian Gurdak and Neokis Avdalas each scored 17 points for Virginia Tech. Against Wake Forest Jailen Bedford scored 25 points and Hansberry added 19 points and 10 rebounds to lead Tech.
The men’s wrestling team participated in the Southern Scuffle event held in Tennessee on January 3rd and 4th.
The women’s basketball team lost to Miami 75-67 in overtime at home on January 1st then faced #13 Louisville losing 85-60 on the road on January 4th dropping their record to 11-5. Against Miami Carleigh Wenzel led Tech with 16 points. Against Louisville Carys Baker led Tech with 16 points.
VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE
The Virginia Military Keydets men’s basketball team split a pair of home conference games this past week losing to Samford 78-58 on January 1st and defeated Chattanooga 79-71 on January 3rd moving their record to 6-9 for the season.
