POCAHONTAS COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Pocahontas County Warriors girls’ varsity basketball team played three games this past week defeating Pendleton County 63-47 on the road on Thursday January 8th, losing to Tug Valley 81-37 at home for their first loss of the season on Saturday January 10th, and defeating Bath County 88-62 at home on Monday January 12th, moving their overall record to 8-1 plus earning a ranking of sixth in Single A. Against Pendleton County Allyson Taylor led the way for Pocahontas with 20 points and 11 rebounds, Alexis Arbogast added 15 points, three rebounds and 3 steals. Calli Propst added 13 points, 12 rebounds and five assists. Shayla Bennett added eight points, and Savana Sharp had seven points. Against Tug Valley the Warrior girls were led by Sharp and Propst who scored 12 points and 11 points respectively. Propst led the Warriors in rebounding with 10 boards and Sharp added eight. Six other teammates added 14 boards. Against Bath County Taylor led the Warriors with 26 points and 21 rebounds, while Sharp scored 21 points and grabbed 8 boards and Propst added 16 points and 12 boards. Arbogast added 13 points and three rebounds. Rylynn Barlow contributed a team high five assists while Propst and Taylor dished out four assists each. For the Chargers Trinity Forbes had a monster game, scoring 38 points and Addie Lockridge added 15.
The Warriors girls JV basketball team defeated Tug Valley 48-45 at home on Saturday January 10th for their third straight win. Julia Brown and Addison Hamrick led Pocahontas with 15 points each. Chloe Annett and Jolene Workman both scored five points with Halleigh Teter, Rya Barlow, Reanna Alderman, Haiven Brown and Ryley Kerr each scoring two.
The Warriors boys’ varsity basketball team split a pair of games at home over the past week losing to Tygarts Valley 67-53 on Wednesday January 7th, picking up their first win of the season defeating Richwood 77-71 on Saturday January 10th and losing to Meadow Bridge 56-49 on the road on Tuesday January 13th moving their record to 1-6. Against Richwood Carter Vandevander scored 30 points to lead Pocahontas with Ben Workman adding 18 and Cash Beers adding 15.
The Warriors boys JV basketball team defeated Richwood 64-46 at home on January 10th with Michael Mason and George Shifflet scoring 17 points each for the Warriors.
HIGHLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Highland County Rams boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams hosted Eastern Montgomery on Tuesday January 13th with the Rams boys losing a close one 35-33 moving their record to 1-3 in the Pioneer District, 7-4 overall. Zach Armstrong led Highland with 19 points, seven rebounds, four assists and three steals. Patton Hull contributed seven points and four steals, while Elijah Good added 13 rebounds. The Rams girls lost 46-31 dropping their record to 0-4 in the Pioneer, 3-7 overall. Colleen Adams led the Lady Rams with 19 points, 11 rebounds and two blocked shots. Makynley Smith and Brooke Williams both scored six points. Williams also had 11 rebounds, and Adelaide Baxter grabbed 10 rebounds.
The Rams boys and girls middle school basketball teams went on the road to face Shawsville on Tuesday January 13th with the Rams girls losing to Shawsville, there is no score or stats at this time. The Rams boys lost 44-9 dropping their record to 2-6. Landon Lightner scored four points to lead Highland, Colton Lightner added two and Creed Good, Jayden Serrett and Abram Lockridge each scored one.
The Rams girls’ varsity and boys’ varsity basketball teams hosted Union Educational Complex WV on Monday January 12th with the Rams girls picking up their third win of the season defeating Union Educational Complex WV 58-14. Adams led the Rams with 18 points, six rebounds, seven assists and six steals. Smith added 14 points, five assists plus five steals. The Rams boys took one on the chin losing 44-33. Armstrong led Highland with 13 points and five assists, Hull had 10 points and five rebounds, and Good added eight points and nine rebounds.
The Rams boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams hosted Narrows on Friday January 9th with the Rams boys losing 58-31. Highland’s Patton Hull scored 12 points and Good added 10 points and eight rebounds. Armstrong had six assists and five rebounds. The Rams girls lost 81-18. Brooke Williams scored eight points, had 11 rebounds and three blocked shots for the Rams. Colleen Adams added five points, and three assists and Adelaide Baxter had three points and 10 rebounds.
The Rams boys and girls middle school basketball teams went on the road to play Parry McCluer on Friday January 9th with the Rams boys losing 44-12. Jayden Serrett and Colton Lightner each scored four points for the Rams with Caynen Sampson and Landon Lightner scoring two apiece. The Rams girls lost 42-13.
BATH COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Bath County Chargers boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams went on the road to face Craig County on Tuesday January 13th with the Chargers boys losing 68-35, dropping their record to 1-4 in the Pioneer, 3-9 overall. Nate Tuner led the Chargers with 14 and Cade Perdue added 11. The Chargers girls lost 56-41 dropping their record to 1-3 in the Pioneer, 3-9 overall. Trinity Forbes led Bath County with 14 points while Addie Lockridge added 12 and Ryleigh Phillips scored seven.
The Chargers boys’ varsity basketball team got dumped on by James River 64-37 on Monday January 12th.
The Chargers wrestling team participated in the Alleghany Duals at Clifton Academy and Mountain View Elementary on Saturday January 10th. As a team the Chargers defeated E.C. Glass, Charlottesville and Buffalo Gap but lost to Pulaski County, Greenbrier East and Page County. Ethan Bryant went undefeated at 6-0, Jesse Perry and Tyler Shaver both went 5-1, while Jeremy Burns, A.J. Woodson and Azi Tyson all went 4-2 in the tournament. Emily Robinson competed in the Tough Girls Round Robin at Stuarts Draft High School on Saturday, going 2-0 for the day.
The Chargers boys’ varsity basketball team hosted Meadow Bridge WV on Friday January 9th losing 65-45. Nate Turner scored 19 points for Bath County and Luke Turner added 13.
The Chargers girls’ varsity basketball team hosted Rocktown losing a heartbreaker 40-38 on Friday January 9th. Forbes led the Chargers with 19 points, Cassie Thompson added 10 and Lockridge scored eight.
The Chargers boys’ varsity and girls’ varsity basketball team hosted Eastern Montgomery on Thursday January 8th with the Chargers boys winning a thriller 45-44. Nate Turner led the Chargers with 21 points, Luke Turner added 12 points and Owen Perdue added eight. The Chargers girls lost 42-29. Thompson and Bre Mabe both scored six points to lead the Chargers.
TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES
UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA
The University of Virginia Cavaliers #16 ranked men’s basketball team picked up a pair of wins at home defeating Cal 84-60 on January 7th and Stanford 70-55 on January 10th then defeated #20 Louisville 79-70 on the road on January 13th, running their record to 15-2. Against Cal Thjis De Ridder led Virginia with 26 points. Against Stanford De Ridder scored 22 points to lead UVA. Against Louisville Malik Thomas led Virginia with 23 points.
The men’s wrestling team faced #9 ranked NC State on the road losing a tight battle 19-17 moving their record to 8-4. The Virginia grapplers won four of the ten bouts in the match.
The women’s basketball team split a pair of games this past week defeating Georgia Tech 61-59 on the road on January 8th and losing to Syracuse 79-60 at home on January 11th dropping their record to 13-4. Against Georgia Tech three Virginia players scored double figures led by Paris Clark with 14. Tabitha Amanze contributed 11 points and 12 boards. Against Syracuse Kymore Johnson led UVA with 19 points.
WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY
The West Virginia Mountaineers men’s basketball team upset #22 Kansas 86-75 at home on January 10th and lost to #7 Houston 77-48 on the road on January 13th moving their record to 11-6. Against Kansas Darryn Peterson led West Virginia with 23 points and Tre White added 18. Against Houston D.J. Thomas led the Mountaineers with 16 points.
The men’s #21 ranked wrestling team went on the road to face Arizona State winning 20-19, moving their record to 6-2. As a team West Virginia split 10 bouts at 5-5.
The women’s basketball team lost to #17 Texas Tech 71-66 at home on January 7th and defeated #11 Iowa State 83-70 on the road on January 11th, moving their record to 14-3. Against Texas Tech Jordan Harrison led the Lady Mountaineers with 22 points. Against Iowa State Kierra Wheeler led West Virginia with 25 points and Harrison added 19.
JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY
The James Madison Dukes men’s basketball team split a pair of home games this past week losing to Marshall 66-64 on January 7th and defeating Old Dominion 70-69 on January 10th, moving their record to 9-8. Against Marshall four JMU Players scored double figures led by Justin McBride with 14 points. Against Old Dominion McBride led James Madison with 29 points.
The women’s basketball team lost a pair of games on the road this past week losing to Georgia Southern 78-70 and Georgia State 72-70 in overtime on January 10th dropping their record to 11-7. Against Georgia Southern four James Madison players scored double figures led by Ahanti Barnes with 15 points. Against Georgia State Peyton McDaniel led JMU with 21 points while Barnes added 11 points and 14 rebounds.
VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY
The Virginia Tech Hokies men’s basketball team split a pair of home games this past week losing to Stanford 69-68 on January 7th and defeating Cal 78-75 on January 10th, moving their record to 13-4. Against Stanford Neoklis Avdalas scored 21 points while Amani Hansberry added 11 points and 11 rebounds to lead Virginia Tech. Against Cal six players scored double figures for Tech led by Hansberry with 15.
The men’s wrestling team narrowly defeated #14 Pitt 18-15 on the road on January 9th moving their record to 5-2.
The women’s basketball team won both games this past week defeating Syracuse 77-57 on the road on January 8th and Boston College 78-56 at home on January 11th improving their record to 13-5. Against Syracuse fiveplay4ers scored double figures for Tech led by Carleigh Wenzel with 18 and Samyha Suffren with 16. Against Boston College Carys Baker led Virginia Tech with 17 points.
VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE
The Virginia Military Keydets men’s basketball team lost twice this past week on the road losing to ETSU 81-37 on January 7th and Furman 69-48 on January 10th dropping their record to 6-11. Against ETSU T.J. Johnson led VMI with 30 points. Against Furman, Johnson scored 15 points for VMI.
