POCAHONTAS COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Warriors girls’ varsity basketball team hosted James Monroe on Thursday Jan 11th losing 75-51 dropping their record to 3-5. Kynlee Wilfong scored 12 points and Allyson Taylor added 10 to lead the Warriors girls.

The Warriors boys’ varsity basketball team played a home game against James Monroe Friday night Jan 12th losing 73-40 dropping their record to 0-6.

BATH COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Bath County Chargers boys’ varsity basketball team got crunched on Friday night Jan 12th losing to Narrows at home 71-38 dropping their record to 1-3 in the Pioneer District, 7-7 overall. Andrew Turner led the Chargers with 12 points, four assists, and four steals. Issac Ingram added eight rebounds and four blocks, and Greyson Walton had six rebounds.

The Chargers boys JV basketball team lost to Narrows 51-24. Isaac Phillips scored seven points and Jake Boguess had six to lead Bath County.

The Chargers girls JV basketball team played Narrows on Friday night Jan 12th coming away with a win 37-24 improving their record to 2-2 in the Pioneer District, 4-5 overall. Trinity Forbes led the Chargers with 23 points. Ryleigh Phillips and Sophie Ailstock added five points each.

The Chargers boys wrestling team participated in the Bison Invitational at Buffalo Gap on Saturday Jan 13th. A.J. Woodson placed 5th at 144 pounds and Miguel Malpica was 6th at 190 pounds. Bath County finished 13th out of the 15-team event.

HIGHLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Highland County Rams boys’ varsity basketball team lost a tough one to Eastern Montgomery on Friday night Jan 12th in Elliston 48-35 dropping their record to 2-2 in the Pioneer District, 3-6 overall. John Wagner notched a double-double in scoring 12 points and grabbing 10 rebounds to lead the Rams. Zach Armstrong added nine rebounds and two assists.

The Rams girls’ varsity basketball team lost to Eastern Montgomery Friday Jan 12th 55-17 dropping their record to 0-3 in the Pioneer District, 0-7 overall. Colleen Adams scored 12 points, grabbed four rebounds, and had two blocks to lead the Rams. Hanah Meyerhoeffer scored four points and had five rebounds and Zalea Good added five rebounds.

TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES

VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE

The Virginia Military Keydets men’s basketball team played a conference match-up against Chattanooga in Chattanooga, TN on Jan 11th losing 109-61. Taeshaud Jackson II, Tyran Cook, and Brennan Watkins scored 14 points apiece to lead VMI. Jackson II also had 14 rebounds. On Jan 13th VMI faced Samford in Birmingham, AL losing 134-96 dropping their record to 3-14. Five VMI players scored in double figures led by Jackson II with 22 points. Cook and Stephen Olowoniyi both scored 16 points and Olowoniyi added 10 rebounds.

The men’s wrestling team took on Hofstra in a home match, losing 28-6. Ryan Vigil and Josh Yost earned wins for VMI. On Jan 14th the VMI wrestlers took on Sacred Heart winning 24-17 and Queens winning 42-3. Against Sacred Heart Patrick Jordan, Yost, Braxton Lewis, Josh Evans, and Tyler Mousaw earned wins for VMI. Against Queens Tony Burke, Dyson Dunham, Freddy Junko, Vigil, Yost, Caleb Chandler, Lewis, Evans, and Mousaw picked up victories for the Keydets.

JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY

The James Madison Dukes men’s basketball team defeated South Alabama at home on Jan 11th 89-55. Noah Freidel scored 26 points to lead James Madison. T.J. Bickerstaff added 10 rebounds, Terrance Edwards, Jr scored 14 points, and Julien Wooden added 13 points. On Jan 13th the Dukes played Appalachian State at home, losing 59-55 dropping their record to 15-2. Edwards, Jr led James Madison with 19 points and Xavier Brown added 10.

The women’s basketball team beat Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, MI on Jan 11th 81-76. Peyton McDaniel led JMU with 33 points. JMU faced Troy in Troy, AL on Jan 13th losing 87-74 dropping their record to 12-5. Kseniia Kozlova led the Dukes with 19 points and 11 rebounds. Jamia Hazell and McDaniel added 13 points apiece.

UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

The Virginia Cavaliers women’s basketball team took on #6 NC State in Raliegh, NC on Jan 11th losing 93-66. Camryn Taylor led Virginia with 22 points. On Sunday Jan 14th the Cavaliers faced #20 North Carolina in Chapel Hill, NC losing 81-68 dropping their record to 8-8. Four Cavaliers scored in double figures led by Taylor with 16 points.

The men’s basketball team lost a road game to Wake Forest on Jan 13th 66-47 dropping their record to 11-5. Reece Beekman led the Cavaliers with 10 points.

The men’s wrestling team took part in the Virginia Duals in Hampton, VA against Kent State winning 27-12 on Jan 12th and Wisconsin losing 27-13 on Jan 13th. Against Kent State Kyle Montaperto, Gable Porter, Nick Sanko, Mason Stefanelli, Justin McCoy, Colden Dorfman and Ryan Catka earned wins for Virginia. Against Wisconsin Evan Buchanan, Sanko, Krystian Kinsey, and Catka picked up victories for UVA.

The #1 men’s tennis team faced two teams on Saturday Jan 13th at home beating Liberty 6-1 and winning against James Madison 7-0.

WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY

The West Virginia Mountaineers women’s basketball team traveled to Ames, IA to play Iowa State on Jan 10th losing 74-64. Four players for West Virginia scored in double figures led by Jordan Harrison with 17 points. The Mountaineers picked up a win against UCF in Orlando, FL on Jan 13th winning 76-59 improving their record to 14-2. J.J. Quinerly led WVU with 21 points and Harrison added 19.

The men’s basketball team upset #25 Texas at home on Jan 13th winning 76-73 improving their record to 6-10. Four Mountaineers scored in double figures led by Patrick Suemnick with 16 points.

The men’s wrestling team hosted #5 Oklahoma State on Jan 14th losing 29-9 dropping their record to 8-2. Ty Watters, Payton Hall, and Austin Cooley picked up wins for the Mountaineers.

VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY

The Virginia Tech Hokies men’s basketball team hosted #21 Clemson on Jan 10th winning 87-72. Sean Pedulla scored 32 points and Tyler Nickel had 24 to lead the Hokies. In a home game against the University of Miami on Jan 13th Virginia Tech lost 75-71 dropping their record to 10-6. Pedulla scored 33 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Hokies.

The #11 women’s basketball team faced the University of Miami at home on Jan 11th winning 76-52. Elizabeth Kitley led Tech in scoring with 31 points and added 11 rebounds. Georgia Amoore tossed in 16 points. On Sunday Jan 14th the Lady Hokies faced #21 Florida State in Tallahassee, FL losing 89-81 dropping their record to 13-3. Kitley, of Virginia tech, continues her amazing run by scoring 30 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.

The #13 men’s wrestling team took on #25 Appalachian State at home on Jan 12th winning 28-10. The Hokies won seven of the ten bouts with six of the victories coming via bonus points. Mekhi Lewis, T.J. Stewart, Andy Smith, Hunter Catka, Cooper Flynn, Tom Crook, and Caleb Henson picked up wins for Virginia Tech.

The men’s tennis team took on the College of Charleston in a match on Monday Jan 15th at home, winning 6-1.

LIBERTY UNIVERSITY

The Liberty Flames men’s basketball team hosted Jacksonville State on Jan 10th losing 61-51. Kaden Metheny scored 15 points and Kyle Rode had 12 to lead the Flames. The guy’s next played Louisiana Tech in Ruston, LA, losing in overtime 80-76 dropping their record to 11-7. Rode led the Flames with 20 points and Zach Cleveland added 18.

The women’s basketball team traveled to Jacksonville, AL to play Jacksonville State on Jan 10th losing 78-63. Bella Smuda led Liberty with 26 points and 17 rebounds. On Jan 13th Liberty hosted Louisiana Tech winning 66-59 improving their record to 6-12. Emma Hess led Liberty with 14 points and Smuda added 13 points and 15 rebounds.

While he did not grow up here, he spent as much time as possible on the family farm, and eventually moved to Highland to continue the tradition, which he still pursues with his cousin. Unfortunately, farming doesn’t pay all the bills, so he has previously taken other jobs to support his farming hobby, including pressman/writer for The Recorder, and Ag Projects Coordinator for The Highland Center.
