POCAHONTAS COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Pocahontas County Warriors boys’ varsity basketball team traveled to Bath County on Friday January 23rd winning 69-64 raising their record to 3-8 as Bath fell to 1-6 in the Pioneer District, 3-13 overall. Pocahontas was led by Ben Workman who scored 21 points, Cash Beers added 15, Carter Vandevander had 12 and Luke Taylor added 10. The Chargers were led by Luke Turner who scored 31 points, Nate Turner added 20, Owen Perdue had six, Cade Perdue had five and Tommy Burke scored two.
The Warriors girls’ varsity and JV basketball teams hosted Tygarts Valley on Thursday January 22nd with the Warriors varsity winning their sixth game in a row 63-53 raising their record to 13-1. All six of the Warriors scored with Allyson Taylor leading the way with 17 points. Calli Propst had 15, Shayla Bennett added 11, Alexis Arbogast had 10, Savana Sharp and six and Rylynn Barlow added four. Taylor also had 13 rebounds and four steals, Propst had 10 rebounds and five blocks. Sharp dished out five assists. The Warriors JV also won 47-21, boosting their record to 4-4.
HIGHLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Highland County Rams boys and girls middle school basketball teams went on the road on Friday January 23rd to face Green Bank with both Rams teams losing. The Rams boys lost 33-17. Caynen Sampson led Highland with seven points, Colton Lightner and Landon Lightner both scored three, Creed Good and Abram Lockridge each scored two. At press time there was no information on the girls’ scores as a team or individually.
The Rams boys’ varsity basketball team hosted the Bath County Chargers on Thursday January 22nd, winning 60-28, boosting their record to 2-4 in the Pioneer District, 9-5 overall. Zach Armstrong led Highland County with 25 points, 11 rebounds, seven steals and six assists. Elijah Good scored 14 points and grabbed 15 boards, Patton Hull had 14 points and four assists, and Levi Warner had five points and eight rebounds. The Chargers were led by Luke Turner who had 14 points and eight rebounds, Nate Turner added seven points, and seven rebounds and Cade Perdue had seven points.
BATH COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Bath County Chargers girls’ varsity basketball team traveled to Monterey to face the Highland County Rams on Thursday January 22nd, winning 59-26, moving their record to 3-3 in the Pioneer District, 5-10 overall. The Rams fell to 0-6 in the Pioneer, 3-9 overall. Trinity Forbes led Bath with 19 points, grabbed eight rebounds and dished out four assists, Bre Mabe scored 12 points, grabbed eight rebounds and had three assists and Ryleigh Phillips scored 11 points and had five rebounds. The Rams were led by Colleen Adams who scored 10 points and had six rebounds, Makynley Smith scored seven points, Brooke Williams had six points and 13 rebounds and Adelaide Baxter pulled down 15 rebounds.
The Chargers wrestling team participated in a quad meet hosted by Giles High School on Wednesday January 21st winning two of three matches. The Chargers defeated Giles 45-30 and Floyd County 54-12 but lost to Fort Chiswell 45-36. Easton Roberts, Jeremy Burns, A.J. Woodson, Ethan Bryant and Azi Tyson went 3-0 for Bath, while Emily Robertson, Harris Ellis, Jesse Perry and Tyler Shaver went 2-1.
The Chargers girls’ varsity basketball team went on the road to face Stonewall Jackson on Wednesday January 21st losing 44-28. Trinity Forbes scored 14 points to lead Bath County, Bre Mabe had five, Kennedi Pritt and Macey Paxton both scored four and Paighten Forbes added one point.
TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES
UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA
The University of Virginia Cavaliers #14 men’s basketball team hosted #22 North Carolina on January 24th losing 85-80 then defeated Notre Dame 100-97 in double overtime on January 27th, moving their record to 17-3. Thijs De Ridder led Virginia with 20 points against North Carolina. De Ridder also scored 32 points to lead Virginia against Notre Dame. Sam Lewis added 21.
The men’s wrestling team hosted #24 Stanford on January 24th losing 31-9 dropping their record to 8-6. The Cavaliers picked up two wins on the day out of ten bouts.
The men’s and women’s squash teams competed in the CSA Individual Championships in New York on January 23-25 with three men and three women competing.
The women’s basketball team split a pair of homer games this past week, defeating Pitt 84-46 on January 22nd and lost to NC State 78-76 in overtime on January 24th, moving their record to 14-6. Against Pitt, Caitlin Weimer led Virginia with 20 points. Against NC State, Kymore Johnson led Virginia with 26 points.
WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY
The West Virginia Mountaineers men’s basketball team split a pair of games out in Arizona facing Arizona State on January 21st winning 75-63 and losing to #1 Arizona 88-53 on January 24th. The Mountaineers then hosted Kansas State on January 27th, winning 59-54, bumping their record to 14-7. Treysen Eaglestaff led WVU with 23 points against Arizona State. Chance Moore led West Virginia with 12 points against Arizona. Honor Huff scored 17 points to lead WVU against Kansas State.
The men’s #19 ranked wrestling team hosted #23 Wyoming on January 24th winning 21-15, moving their record to 9-3. The Mountaineers won six of ten bouts.
The #1 mixed rifle team went on the road to face #6 Navy on January 24th winning 4755-4724 to extend their win streak to nine matches and bump their record up to 15-1.
The women’s basketball team won two of three games this past week defeating Arizona State 53-43 at home on January 21st and BYU 91-77 on the road on January 24th before losing to Utah 71-64 on the road on January 27th dropping their record to 17-5. Kierra Wheeler led West Virginia with 16 points against Arizona State. Five WVU players scored double figures led by Sydney Wolley with 23 and Gia Cooke with 21. Carter McCray contributed 13 points and 11 rebounds. Jordan Harrison scored 18 points to lead WVY against Utah.
JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY
The James Madison Dukes men’s basketball team split a pair of home games this past week losing to South Alabama 90-83 on January 22nd and defeating Texas State 82-57 on January 24th, moving their record to 10-11. Justin McBride led JMU with 30 points and 12 rebounds against South Alabama. McBride and Cliff Davis both scored 18 points to lead JMU over Texas State.
The women’s basketball team split a pair of road games this past week, defeating ULM 72-68 on January 22nd and losing to Arkansas State 74-67 on January 25th, moving their record to 14-8. Peyton McDaniel led JMU with 21 points against ULM and 21 points against Arkansas State.
VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY
The Viriginia Tech Hokies men’s basketball team split a pair of road games this past week defeating Syracuse 76-74 on January 21st and losing to #23 Louisville 85-71 on January 24th then defeated Georgia Tech 71-65 at home on January 27th moving their record to 16-6. Ben Hammond scored 24 points to lead VT against Syracuse. Jailen Bedford led Tech with 24 against Louisville. Hammond scored 20 points to lead Va Tech against Georgia Tech.
The men’s wrestling team took on #24 Stanford on January 23rd winning 22-14 improving their record to 7-2.
The women’s basketball team now has a five-game win streak after defeating Clemson 71-68 at home on January 22nd and Wake Forest 85-57 on the road on January 24th, moving their record to 16-5. Carleigh Wenzel and Carys Baker both scored 24 points to lead Tech over Clemson. Baker scored 20 to lead Tech over Wake Forest.
VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE
The Virginia Military Keydets men’s basketball team lost a pair of games this past week losing to UNCG 85-78 at home on January 21st and Western Carolina 88-58 on the road on January 24th dropping their record to 6-15. T.J. Johnson and Tan Yildizoglu both scored 18 points to lead VMI against UNCG. Johnson added 10 rebounds. A.J. Clark led VMI with 17 points against Western Carolina.
The women’s water polo team ventured out to California picking up three wins out of four matches from January 22-24. They defeated Whittier College, University of Redlands and University of La Verne. The Keydets lost to Azusa Pacific University. Their record now stands at 3-1.
