POCAHONTAS COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Pocahontas County Warriors boys’ varsity basketball team played several games this past week, losing to Tygarts Valley 46-39 on the road on Thursday January 23rd, defeating Harman 57-49 at home on Friday January 24th, losing to Pendleton County 45-35 at home on Saturday January 25th, losing to Highland County 59-40 on the road on Monday January 27th, then losing to Pendleton County 78-43 on the road on Tuesday January 28th moving their record to 2-9. Against Highland County Ben Workman scored 11 points and Dillon Cruz added nine for the Warriors varsity. The boys JV team played the earlier game against Tygarts Valley winning 63-46 on Thursday January 23rd then lost to Pendleton County 52-45 in the early game on Tuesday January 28th moving their record to 3-4.
The Warrior girls’ varsity basketball team played a road game against Pendleton County on Saturday January 25th losing 45-35 then defeated Petersburg 49-41 at home on Wednesday January 29th, moving their record to 8-4. Against Pendleton County Allyson Taylor and Shayla Bennett each scored eight points with Savana Sharp and Riley Pollack adding six points each for Pocahontas.
The Warriors girls JV basketball team played Harman on the road on Friday January 24th, winning 41-19 then defeated Highland County 30-26 on the road on Monday January 27th before losing to Petersburg 47-30 on Wednesday January 29th moving their record to 9-1 for the season. Against Highland Riley Cassell led Pocahontas with 10 points while Caroline Bennett added seven.
HIGHLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Highland Rams boys’ varsity basketball team won a road game against Richwood WV 34-23 on Wednesday January 22nd. John Wagner scored 18 points to lead the Rams. Elijah Good added seven points and eight rebounds, Eli Moore had six points and grabbed 15 rebounds. Patton Hull had three assists, and both Wagner and Levi Warner had five boards. The Rams JV girls’ basketball team played the early game against Richwood WV winning 42-26. For the Rams Colleen Adams scored 14 points, Amelia Good added 10 and Makynley Smith scored nine points and dished out four assists. Brooke Williams pulled down seven rebounds.
On Friday January 24th both the Rams boys’ varsity and girls JV teams hosted Craig County. The Rams boys defeated Craig County 40-28, improving their record to 2-4 in the Pioneer District. Wagner scored 13 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Highland. Moore added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Elijah Good had 12 rebounds and Armstrong dished out six assists. The Rams girls lost a close one to Craig County 36-34, moving their record to 3-3 in the Pioneer. For Highland Adams had a busy night scoring 14 points, grabbing six rebounds, handing out four assists and had three steals. Ameila Good added 11 points and had three blocked shots. Williams pulled down nine rebounds, Hannah Meyerhoeffer had seven rebounds and Smith had three assists.
Both the Rams boys and girls middle school basketball teams hosted Parry McCluer on Wednesday January 22nd and each team lost. The girl’s score was 47-6 with Lelea Mullins of Highland scoring four points. Kendra Meredith grabbed three rebounds and had a blocked shot, and both Haven Wilfong and Wren Cox had two rebounds apiece. On Thursday January 23rd both teams were back in action hosting Green Bank. The boys middle school team lost 26-15 to Green Bank, ending their season with a 0-10 record. Colton Lightner led the Rams with eight points. Kaden Neil scored five and Jace Armstrong scored two. Lightner and Neil both pulled down six rebounds, Armstrong had five rebounds and three steals while Neil added two assists. The Rams girls team lost 29-5, ending their season at 2-8. Wilfong had three points to lead the Rams. Mullins and Cox added one point apiece. Mullins grabbed 11 boards and had two steals. Wilfong had nine rebounds, and two assists and Warner had eight rebounds and two steals.
The Rams boys’ varsity and the girls JV basketball teams hosted Pocahontas County on Monday January 27th. The Rams boys won 59-40. Wagner scored 26 points, Armstrong added 13 and Hull had nine for Highland County. Moore added 12 rebounds, Elijah Good had 10 boards, Armstrong had 10 assists, and three steals and Hull had five assists and three blocked shots. The Rams girls JV team lost a tight one to Pocahontas County 30-26. Adams led the Rams with 15 points and Smith adding five. Williams cleaned the glass for Highland with 10 rebounds.
The Rams boys’ varsity and girls JV basketball team hosted Harman WV on Tuesday January 28th and each came away winners. The guys won their fourth game in a row defeating Harman WV 64-40, improving their record to 7-6. Wagner had another big night scoring 25 points including four threes while Good added 13 points. Armstrong dished out 13 assists and had 12 rebounds, Moore had 10 rebounds and four steals, Wagner had nine rebounds and Elijah Good grabbed eight boards. Hull had four assists. The Rams girls JV team had a big night winning 54-20 against Harman improving their record to 7-5. Adams scored a game high 26 points and grabbed five rebounds for the Rams. Smith added 11 points and Meyerhoeffer scored eight. Williams grabbed 12 rebounds.
BATH COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Bath County Chargers boys’ varsity and JV basketball teams hosted Eastern Montgomery on Thursday January 23rd. The Chargers boys JV team lost 52-36 with Miguel Rosado of Bath County scoring 13 points and Nathaniel Turner adding 12. Bath’s varsity team lost 59-37. Issac Ingram led the Chargers with 14 points and Luke Turner added 12.
The Chargers wrestling team competed in a quad meet against Fort Chiswell, Northwood and George Wythe on Thursday January 23rd. Results were not made available. Bath County’s Emily Robertson participated in the 3rd Annual Louisa County Ladies Wrestling Invitational on Saturday January 25th posting a 3-2 record with her wins coming by way of pins. On Monday January 27th the Chargers wrestling team took part in a tri-meet at Buffalo Gap. Tyler Shaver, A.J. Woodson and Jeremy Burns all went 2-0 for Bath County as they went against grapplers from Buffalo Gap and Allegheny.
The Chargers girls’ varsity basketball team got crunched Monday January 27th losing to Narrows 62-30 in a home contest. Addie Lockridge scored 11 points for the Chargers and Trinity Forbes added 10. The girls’ varsity then went on the road to face Craig County on Tuesday January 28th winning 42-32 improving their record to 2-4 in the Pioneer, 6-4 overall. Lockridge scored 18 points to lead Bath County while Forbes added 14 and Brooklyn Phillips scored seven.
The Chargers boys’ varsity and JV basketball teams hosted Craig County on Tuesday January 28th with the Chargers varsity winning 50-36 moving their record to 1-4 in the Pioneer, 3-9 overall. Ingram scored 22 points while Turner added 20 including five threes. Bath’s JV team lost to Craig County 39-30 dropping their record to 0-5 in the Pioneer, 2-9 overall. Rosado and Parker Cauley both scored nine points for the Chargers.
TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES
UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA
The University of Virigina men’s basketball team hosted Notre Dame on January 25th losing 74-59 then played the University of Miami on the road winning 82-71 on January 29th improving their record to 10-11. For Virginia Jacob Cofie led the team with 17 points against Notre Dame. Against Miami Isaac McKneely scored 26 points and Taine Murray added 20 for Virginia.
The men’s wrestling team hit the road on January 26th to face #16 Stanford losing 34-9, dropping their record to 4-3. Two Virginia grapplers picked up wins, one by a pin.
The women’s basketball team lost a pair of games over the past week losing to #18 Georgia Tech 75-62 on January 23rd and losing to Louisville 68-65 on January 26th dropping their record to 11-10. Against Georgia Tech Kymore Johnson led Virginia with 22 points, Latasha Lattimore added 10 points and 10 rebounds with Breona Hurd scoring 16 points. Against Louisville Paris Clark led Virginia with 19 points.
WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY
The West Virginia Mountaineers men’s basketball team lost a pair of games, this time to Kansas State 73-60, in a away contest on January 25th and to #6 Houston 63-49 at home on January 29th dropping their record to 13-7. Javon Small led the Mountaineers with 22 points against Kansas State. Against Houston Small, Toby Okani and Amani Hansberry each scored eight points for West Virginia.
The #20 men’s wrestling team lost to #23 Missouri on the road 22-16 moving their record to 8-5. Five West Virginia grapplers earned wins on the mat.
The #1 Mountaineers co-ed rifle team remained undefeated at 12-0 after taking down #11 Ohio State 4756-4707 and #17 Morehead State 4756-4663 on January 25th, then defeating #11 Akron 4747-4711 on January 26th, all the matches being in Ohio.
The women’s basketball team split a pair of games this past week out in Arizona. The Lady Mountaineers defeated Arizona State 89-59 on January 22nd but lost to Arizona 77-62 on January 25th, moving their record to 16-4. Against Arizona State J.J. Quinerly led West Virginia with 29 points and Kylee Blacksten added 24. Against Arizona Quinerly led the Mountaineers with 26 points.
JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY
The James Madison Dukes men’s basketball team picked up a couple of road wins this past week defeating Old Dominion 74-60 on January 22nd and defeating Georgia State 86-79 on January 25th moving their record to 12-9. Against Old Dominion A.J. Smith led four James Madison players, scoring double figures, with 21 points. Five Dukes players scored in double figures against Georgia State led by Bryce Lindsay with 19.
The women’s basketball team increased their win streak to ten games this past week, defeating Southern Miss 62-47 on January 24th at home, defeating Coastal Carolina 76-69 on January 26th at home, and defeating Georgia Southern 77-60 at home on January 29th moving their record to 18-4. Ashanti Barnes led James Madison in scoring against Southern Miss with 22 points and 15 rebounds. Against Coastal Carolina four players scored double figures for James Madison led by Peyton McDaniel with 23 points. She also grabbed 10 rebounds. Kseniia Kozlova added 14 points and 10 rebounds. Against Georgia Southern Ro Scott led James Madison with 17 points while McDaniel helped by scoring 10 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Barnes added 15 points plus 13 rebounds and Kozlova got 13.
VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY
The Virginia Tech Hokies men’s basketball team lost a pair of games this past week losing to Georgia Tech on the road 71-64 on January 22nd and then losing to Clemson at home 72-57 on January 25th before defeating Florida State 76-66 on January 29th on the road moving their record to 9-12. Against Georgia Tech Tyler Johnson scored 14 points to lead the Hokies. Against Clemson Tobi Lawal scored 14 points to lead Virginia Tech. Lawal scored 17 along with grabbing 13 rebounds for Tech against Florida State and Jaden Schutt added 16 points.
The #11 men’s wrestling team took on Duke in a road contest on January 24th winning 31-15 improving their record to 5-2. Tech won six of ten bouts despite missing three starters in the lineup.
The women’s basketball team split a pair of road games this past week, defeating Pitt on the road 84-57 on January 23rd then losing to #20 NC State 85-57 on January 26th, moving their record to 14-6. The starting five for Virginia Tech all scored double figures led by Carleigh Wenzel with 16. Rose Micheaux grabbed 15 rebounds in addition to her 14 points. Against NC State Wenzel led Tech with 18 points.
VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE
The Virginia Military Keydets men’s basketball team extended their win streak to three games defeating Furman 91-82 at home on January 22nd, before losing to UNCG 60-57 at home on January 25th. The Keydets defeated Wofford 74-67 on the road on January 29th, moving their record to 10-12. Augustinas Kiudulas led VMI against Furman, scoring 22 points. Kiudulas led VMI again by scoring 20 points against UNCG. T.J. Johnson led VMI with 20 points against Wofford.
The men’s wrestling team faced Chattanooga on the road on January 25th losing 28-10 dropping their record to 4-7. Three VMI grapplers earned wins on the mat during the meet.
