The Highland County Rams boys’ and girls’ varsity basketball teams traveled to face Union Educational Complex on Saturday January 31st. The Rams girls’ varsity topped Union Educational 48-19, improving to 4-9. Colleen Adams set a career high with 31 points, Brooke Williams had 11 points and four rebounds, Adelaide Baxter scored four, Anna Meehan added two, and Marley Jarrells grabbed four rebounds—with just five players dressed. The Rams boys’ varsity fell 44-29, now 9-6 for the season, led by Zach Armstrong’s 13 points, Elijah Good’s nine, and Patton Hull’s seven.

TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES
UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA
The University of Virginia men’s basketball team, currently ranked #18, secured a 73-66 victory over Boston College on January 31st and followed up with a 67-47 win against Pitt at home on February 3rd, bringing their record to 19-3. In the Boston College game, Thijs De Ridder dropped 32 points while Sam Lewis contributed 21, with four Cavaliers scoring double figures. Against Pitt, Lewis led the team with 15 points, and De Ridder posted a double-double, adding 10 points and 12 rebounds.
The #5 ranked men’s squash team defeated #19 Western Ontario 9-0 on a neutral court in Maryland on January 30th, moving their record to 10-3.
The #6 ranked women’s squash team defeated #15 Georgetown 7-2 on a neutral court in Maryland on January 31st, raising their record to 9-3.
The men’s wrestling team defeated Duke 28-9 on the road on January 30th, moving their record to 9-6.
The Virginia women’s basketball team split last week’s games, beating Wake Forest 109-103 in triple overtime on January 29th and falling to Virginia Tech 76-64 on February 1st, making their season record 15-7. In the win, five players scored double digits—Kymora Johnson led with 26 points, Caitlin Weimar had 25 points and 10 rebounds, and Gabby White posted 22 points and 12 rebounds. Johnson also led the scoring attack against Virginia Tech with 19 points.
WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY
The West Virginia Mountaineers men’s basketball team lost to Baylor 63-53 at home on January 31st, falling to 14-8. Brenen Lorient led West Virginia with 19 points.
The third-ranked co-ed rifle team hosted the sixteenth-ranked Army team on January 31st, achieving a 4745-4683 victory. This win improved their record to 17-1 and extended their current winning streak to eleven matches.
The women’s basketball team went 1-1 last week, losing at Utah 71-64 on January 27th and beating Baylor 70-60 at home on February 1st to reach an 18-5 record. Jordan Harrison led WVU with 18 points against Utah, and both Harrison and Kierra Wheeler scored 18 in the win over Baylor.
JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY
The James Madison Dukes men’s basketball team went 1-1 on the road last week, beating Troy 73-64 on January 29th and falling to Southern Miss 73-65 on January 31st, for an 11-12 record. Cliff Davis led JMU in both games, scoring 23 points against Troy and 18 against Southern Miss.
The women’s basketball team secured two home wins last week—beating Louisiana 96-45 on January 29th and South Alabama 88-52 on January 31st—to improve to 16-8. Bree Robinson scored 22 points against Louisiana, and Peyton McDaniel had 22 versus South Alabama, with five players reaching double figures in both games.
VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY
The Virginia Tech Hokies men’s basketball team went 1-1 at home this past week defeating Georgia Tech 71-65 on January 27th and losing to #4 Duke 72-58 on January 31st moving their record to 16-7. Ben Hammond led Tech with 20 points against Georgia Tech. Amani Hansberry led Virginia Tech with 20 points against Duke.
The men’s wrestling team went on the road to face #8 NC State winning 21-12 on January 30th, running their record to 8-2.
The women’s basketball team extended their win streak to seven with home victories over Pitt 67-50 on Jan 29th and Virginia 76-64 on Feb 1st, improving to 18-5. Carleigh Wenzel led Tech in scoring both games, with 17 points against Pitt and 23 against Virginia.
VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE
The Virginia Military Keydets men’s basketball team lost both away games last week, falling to Citadel 80-56 on January 29th and Mercer 95-81 on January 31st, bringing their record to 6-17. T.J. Johnson led VMI with 16 points against Citadel and 26 against Mercer.
