POCAHONTAS COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Pocahontas County Warriors boys’ varsity and JV basketball teams hosted Greenbrier West on Thursday January 30th with the varsity losing 62-48, dropping their record to 2-10. The boys JV team lost 47-42 dropping their record to 3-5.
The Warriors girls’ varsity and JV basketball teams hosted Greenbrier West on Friday January 31st with the varsity winning 67-62 boosting their record to 9-4. The girls JV team won 40-34 improving their record to 10-1. Allyson Taylor led the girls’ varsity with 24 points and Savana Sharp added 13. Alexis Arbogast contributed 9 points, both Riley Pollack and Mackenzie Taylor added seven apiece.
HIGHLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Rams boys’ varsity and JV basketball teams hosted Boys Home on Thursday January 30th. The Rams varsity team won 71-39. John Wagner scored 26 points and Eli Moore added 20 for the Rams. Elijah Good added 10. Zach Armstrong dished out 13 assists and grabbed eight rebounds and five steals, Moore had 10 rebounds, four assists and four steals and Good had nine rebounds. The Rams boys JV team lost 70-14. Chase Lupo and Matthew Wigal scored six points each for Highland.
The Rams boys’ varsity basketball and girls JV teams hosted Union Educational Complex on Saturday January 31st with the boys’ varsity coming away with a 47-46 victory to win their sixth straight win. Wagner scored 18 points for the Rams, while Patton Hull and Armstrong both had 8 points. Good had 11 rebounds, Moore had seven rebounds, three blocked shots and Armstrong had eight assists, five rebounds and four steals. The Rams girl’s junior varsity basketball team lost their game 49-20 dropping their record to 7-6. Colleen Adams and Adelaide Baxter both scored six points to lead the Lady Rams. Baxter added four steals, Brooke Williams grabbed 11 rebounds and Hannah Meyerhoeffer had six rebounds.
The Rams boys’ varsity and girls JV team hosted Eastern Montgomery on Tuesday February 4th. The boys’ varsity team won their seventh game in a row in defeating Eastern Montgomery 61-49 raising their record to 3-4 in the Pioneer, 10-6 overall. Wagner had a double-double scoring 23 points and grabbing 11 rebounds, Good also had a double-double scoring 16 points and pulling down 11 rebounds and Moore added 13 points with nine rebounds for the Rams. Armstrong had five points, 12 assists and three steals, while Hull had four points, five assists and two steals. The girls JV team also won, defeating Eastern Montgomery 25-21 moving their record to 4-3 in the Pioneer, 8-6 overall. Ameila Good scored 11 points for the Rams, Adams had six points, three assists, nine steals and five blocked shots, Smith and Meyerhoeffer each scored three points and Williams had two points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots.
BATH COUNTY SCHOOLS
Bath County wrestler Emily Robertson participated in the VHSL Zone 3 Qualifier on Saturday January 31st at Rocktown High School in Harrisonburg. Robertson wrestled to a 2-2 record in the 126-pound weight class.
The Chargers girls’ varsity basketball team went on the road Monday February 3rd to face Roanoke Valley Christian where they won 50-16. Trinity Forbes led Bath County with 17 points, while Addie Lockridge added 16 and Ryleigh Phillips had seven. On Tuesday February 4th the Chargers girls’ varsity lost in overtime to Parry McCluer 34-30, moving their record to 2-5 in the Pioneer, 7-5 overall. Forbes led the Chargers with 13 points, Lockridge had 10, Phillips scored five and Macey Paxton had two.
The Chargers boys’ varsity and JV basketball teams traveled to face Parry McCluer on Tuesday February 4th with the varsity losing 83-45 dropping their record to 1-5 in the Pioneer, 3-10 overall. Issac Ingram scored 21 points and Luke Turner added 20 for Bath County. In the earlier game the Chargers JV team lost 37-25 dropping their record to 0-6 in the Pioneer, 2-10 overall. Miguel Rosado scored 15 points while Parker Cauley and Nathaniel Turner added five each.
TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES
UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA
The University of Virginia Cavaliers hosted an arch-rival On February 1st in Virginia Tech but lost a closely contested game 75-74. Isaac McKneely led the Cavaliers with 19 points. The Cavaliers next played Pittsburgh on the road on February 3rd, winning 73-57, improving their record to 11-12. Dai Dai Ames led Virginia with 27 points and Blake Buchanan added 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The men’s wrestling team went on the road to face #10 Virginia Tech losing 36-3 on January 31st dropping their record to 4-4 for the season. Nick Hamilton (165-pounds) earned the only victory for the Virginia grapplers.
The women’s basketball team split a pair of road games this past week losing to the University of Miami 77-74 on January 30th then defeated Syracuse 70-67 on February 2nd moving their record to 12-11. Against Miami Latasha Lattimore led Virginia with 25 points. Lattimore led Virginia with 26 points against Syracuse.
WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY
The West Virginia Mountaineers men’s basketball team traveled to Cincinnati winning 63-50 on February 2nd moving their record to 14-7. Javon Small led the Mountaineers with 19 points and Joseph Yesufu added 16.
The #21 men’s wrestling team hosted #5 Northern Iowa losing 29-10 on February 1st moving their record to 8-6. Three West Virginia wrestlers earned victories by way of one major decision and two decisions.
The #21 women’s basketball team defeated Oklahoma State 54-37 at home on February 1st, improving their record to 17-4. Sydney Shaw led the Mountaineers with 18 points.
JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY
The James Madison University Dukes men’s basketball team won a pair of home games this past week defeating Coastal Carolina 73-64 on January 30th then defeated Old Dominion 68-54 on February 1st improving their record to 14-9. Against Coastal Carolina Mark Freeman led James Madison scoring 29 points. Against Old Dominion Freeman led the Dukes with 17 points. Bryce Lindsay added 14 and Elijah Hutchins-Everett scored 13.
The women’s basketball team has won 11 in a row after defeating Old Dominion on the road 85-62 on February 1st, moving their record to 19-4. Ashanti Barnes scored 24 points and Peyton McDaniel added 19 points plus 13 boards to lead James Madison.
VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY
The Virginia Tech Hokies men’s basketball team defeated one of their archrivals Virginia 75-74 on the road on February 1st moving their record to 10-12. Jaden Schutt scored 18 points and Tobi Lawal added 17 to lead the Hokies.
The women’s basketball team split a pair of games this past week losing to #3 Notre Dame 77-61 on the road on January 30th then defeated SMU at home 79-71 on February 1st moving their record to 15-7. Against Notre Dame Carys Baker led Tech with 17 points and 11 rebounds. Matilda Ekh scored 23 points and Carleigh Wenzel added 21 to lead Virginia Tech against SMU.
VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE
The Virginia Military Keydets men’s basketball team has won two in a row after defeating Western Carolina on the road 80-76 in overtime on February 1st. VMI now stands at 11-12 for the season. Rickey Bradley, Jr., scored 23 points and Augustinas Kiudulas added 21 for the Keydets.
The men’s wrestling team split a pair of road matches this past week defeating Gardner-Webb 22-20 on January 31st and losing to Bellarmine 31-9 on February 2nd moving their record to 5-8. After losing the first three bouts against Gardener-Webb VMI won five of the last seven to eke out the win. Against Bellarmine VMI won two matchups of the ten.
