POCAHONTAS COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Warriors girls’ varsity basketball team lost to Petersburg on Wednesday night Feb 14th in an away game 85-49. Kynlee Wilfong led Pocahontas in scoring with 12 points, Riley Pollack and Allyson Taylor added nine points each, and Olivia Vandevender had eight. In the game before the varsity the JV basketball team took one on the chin losing to Petersburg 63-28. Caroline Bennett led Pocahontas in scoring with nine points with Alexis Arbogast and Addison Hamrick adding eight each. On Friday night Feb 16th the girls’ varsity won 53-45 defeating Summers County in an away game moving their record to 10-11. Pollack scored 19 points, Propst had 12, Taylor added 10 and Vandevender had nine to lead Pocahontas. The JV team also defeated Summers County 27-21 moving their record to 12-5. Arbogast led the Warriors JV team with nine points, Taylor added eight, Bennett scored six and Hamrick added four.

The Warriors boys’ varsity and JV basketball teams played an away game at James Monroe on Friday Feb 16th. The varsity team lost 80-33. The JV team also lost 80-25. On Tuesday Feb 20th both the varsity and JV teams played an away game against Tygarts Valley. The boys’ varsity lost 77-50 dropping their record to 3-17. The score and record of the JV team is unknown currently.

BATH COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Chargers boys’ varsity basketball team played Parry McCluer in the second round of the district tournament in Buena Vista on Wednesday night Feb 14th losing 96-53. Andrew Turner scored 14 points and had six assists to lead Bath County. Issac Ingram had eight points and six rebounds, Luke Turner added seven points, Greyson Walton and Carter Hooker scored six points each and Wyatt Campbell had four assists. On Friday Feb 16th the boys’ varsity played in the consolation game of the district tournament defeating Eastern Montgomery 63-57. Campbell scored 23 points, Luke Turner added 17 and Frankie DeBoe had nine to lead Bath County. On Tuesday night Feb 20th the boys’ varsity played in the quarterfinals of the Class I, Region C tournament losing to George Wythe in Wytheville, VA 85-48 bringing their season to a close at 13-14 overall. Walton scored 18 points for the Chargers, DeBoe added 12 points and seven rebounds, and Ingram netted 10 points along with seven rebounds. Luke Turner pulled down five rebounds.

The Chargers wrestling team had three wrestlers take part in the Class 1 state tournament on Friday Feb 16th. A.J. Woodson went 1-2 with a pin, Ethan Bryant was 1-2 with a decision victory and Dillan Royer was 1-2 with a forfeit win.

TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES

VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE

The Virginia Military Keydets went on the road to play Furman on Feb 14th losing 75-62. Taeshaud Jackson II led VMI with 14 points and 12 rebounds. Maurice Wright Jr added 13 points. On Feb 17th VMI traveled to Charleston, SC to play The Citadel losing 76-51 dropping their record to 4-23. Jackson II scored 13 points and Stephen Olowoniyi added 11 to lead Virginia Military.

The men’s wrestling team hosted Davidson on Feb 16th losing 24-19. The Keydets started out strong, winning three of the first four matches but could not hold on. Four VMI wrestlers picked up wins. On Feb 18th the men’s wrestling team faced off against Gardner-Webb in Boiling Springs, NC losing 28-10. Tyler Mousaw and Braxton Lewis earned wins for VMI.

The men’s baseball team traveled to Baton Rouge, LA to play in a four-game series. On Feb 16th VMI lost to #4 LSU 11-8 and defeated the University of Central Arkansas 3-1. On Feb 17th VMI lost to the University of Central Arkansas 4-3. On Feb 18th VMI lost to #4 LSU 27-5. On Feb 20th the Keydets traveled to Norfolk, VA to play Norfolk State, winning 11-9 moving their record to 2-3.

The men’s lacrosse team played High Point in High Point, NC on Feb 16th losing 19-9 and on Feb 20th VMI traveled to Hampton, VA to play Hampton winning 25-6 moving their record to 2-2.

The co-ed rifle team participated in the NCAA Qualifier held in Morgantown, WV on Feb 17th falling short of qualifying. The team will now set their sights the Southern Conference Championship which will be held March 2-3 in Charleston, SC.

JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY

The James Madison Dukes men’s basketball team hosted Georgia State on Feb 15th winning 83-63. Terrance Edwards, Jr scored 28 points and T.J. Bickerstaff added 21 to lead JMU. On Feb 17th the men faced Georgia Southern at home winning 87-80 moving their record to 24-3. Six JMU players scored in double figures led by Edwards, Jr with 19 points.

The women’s golf team participated in the Great River Cup in Gulfport, MS placing second out of eight teams.

The men’s baseball team traveled to Fayetteville, AR to face #2 Arkansas in a four-game series on Feb 16-19. The Dukes won one game 7-3 and lost three games 6-4, 15-5, and 4-0 moving their record to 1-3.

The men’s tennis team faced Richmond at home losing 4-2 on Feb 16th and took on George Mason at home on Feb 17th winning 4-3.

The women’s softball team participated in the Weiler Orthodontics Invitational on Feb 16-18. On Feb 16th JMU beat Villanova 8-5 and Lehigh 8-1. On Feb 18th the women picked up wins against Lehigh 17-9 and Geroge Mason 7-0 moving their record to 8-1.

The women’s basketball team hosted Georgia State on Feb 15th losing 73-62. Peyton McDaniel led JMU with 21 points. The women then played Coastal Carolina at home on Feb 17th winning 82-66 moving their record to 18-9. McDaniel led JMU with 22 points and 13 rebounds. Steph Ouderkirk added 11 points and Annalicia had 10 points and 11 rebounds.

The women’s lacrosse team played two games this past week defeating Virginia Tech 17-5 on Feb 14th and UConn 15-14 on Feb 17th moving their record to 3-0.

The women’s track team participated in the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championships in Birmingham, AL on Feb 19-20 placing 10th out of 13 teams. JMU hurdler Jordyn Henderson took third in the 60m hurdles and Miranda Stanhope finished in second in the 3000m distance race.

UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

The #21 Virginia Cavaliers men’s basketball team won a tightly contested game against Wake Forest on Feb 17th 49-47. Reece Beekman scored 20 points and Isaac McKneely added 12 for Virginia.

The #14 men’s baseball team hosted a three-game series against Hofstra on Feb 16-18. The Cavaliers won all three games by scores of 10-8, 21-3, and 11-9 to remain undefeated at 3-0.

The #4 men’s tennis team participated in the ITA National Team Indoor Championships on Feb 16-19 in New York, NY. In the round of 16 Virgnia played #13 Duke winning 4-1. In the quarterfinals the men faced #5 Tennessee winning 5-1 advancing to the semi-finals against #1 Ohio State where they lost 4-0.

The men’s wrestling team lost a close match to North Carolina at home on Feb 16th 18-16. Each team won five weight classes, but the difference was in bonus points.

The women’s softball team traveled to Tuscaloosa, AL to participate in the Easton Bama Bash on Feb 16-18. On Feb 16th Virginia played Southern Indiana winning 5-2 but lost to #12 Alabama 3-1. On Feb 17th Virginia faced off again against #12 Alabama losing 3-2 and then played Southern Indiana winning 3-1. On Feb 18th the UVA women won beating St. Thomas (MN) 9-3 moving their record to 6-4.

The #3 men’s lacrosse team faced #16 Richmond in Richmond, VA on Feb 17th winning 14-10 moving their record to 2-0.

The #16 women’s lacrosse team hosted Princeton on Feb 17th winning 14-12 moving their record to 3-0.

The women’s basketball team hosted #19 Syracuse on Feb 18th losing 85-79 dropping their record to 12-13. Camryn Taylor led the Cavaliers in scoring with 20 points, Paris Clark added 16, and Kymore Johnson had 15 points and 10 assists.

The men’s and women’s track team participated in three events this past weekend: the Arkansas Qualifier on Feb 16th in Fayetteville, AR, the Virginia Tech Challenge on Feb 16-17 in Blacksburg, VA and the Terrier DMR Challenge on Feb 16th in Boston, MA. In the DMR event UVA’s men’s distance medley team broke the DMR record for that event placing them first in the ACC and second in the NCAA Indoor performance ratings. In the Virginia Tech Challenge Anzhelika Parenchuk won the 400m dash as a trio of UVA runners swept the top three spots. In the same meet Peter Djan won the 60m hurdles and Bree Lumpkin placed second in the women’s weight throw. In the Arkansas Challenge Shane Cohen finished 5th in the men’s 800m.

WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY

The West Virginia Mountaineers men’s basketball team lost to #12 Baylor at home on Feb 17th 94-81. RaeQuan Battle scored 25 points and Jesse Edwards added 21 to lead the Mountaineers. On Feb 20th West Virginia played UCF at home, winning 77-67 moving their record to 9-17. Battle scored 24 points for the Mountaineers and Jesse Edwards scored 15 points with 10 rebounds while Quinn Slazinski added 14 points.

The #24 women’s basketball team faced #23 Oklahoma in a home contest on Feb 17th winning 70-66 improving their record to 22-3. Four West Virginia players scored in double figures led by J.J. Quinerly with 18 points.

The men’s baseball team traveled to DeLand, FL to play Stetson in a four-game series on Feb 16-19. The Mountaineers split the four games winning two 6-4 and 7-5 while losing two 7-5 and 5-4 moving their record to 2-2 for the season.

The women’s tennis team hosted Toledo on Feb 16th winning 4-3 and William & Mary on Feb 18th winning 4-1.

The women’s track team took part in the Penn State Tune-Up on Feb 16th in University Park, PA. Annishka McDonald won the women’s high jump, Sophia Ludwig placed third in the triple jump, Sierra Heisey placed third in the 60m dash, Ghamani placed third in the 60m hurdles and Cate Pickering placed second in the 400m run.

The co-ed rifle team took part in a NCAA Qualifying Match on Feb 17th in Morgantown, WV to determine who will make up the eight-team field in this year’s NCAA Championships.

The men’s wrestling team hosted Glenville State on Feb 18th winning 42-3. The guys scored three technical falls in three of the first four bouts, five in the whole meet along with two major decisions as West Virginia won nine of the ten matches.

VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY

The Virginia Tech Hokies men’s basketball team faced #7 North Carolina in Chapel Hill, NC on Feb 17th losing 96-81. Six Hokies scored in double figures led by M.J. Collins with 18 points. On Feb 19th Virginia Tech faced their arch-rival #21 Virginia in a home contest winning in large fashion 75-41 moving their record to 15-11. Virginia fell to 20-7. For Virginia Tech four players scored in double figures led by Lynn Kidd with 14 points, Robbie Beran and Tyler Nickel with 13 each. Isaac McKneely led Virginia with 11 points.

The #12 women’s basketball team hosted Duke in a match-up on Feb 15th, winning 61-56. Elizabeth Kitley led Tech with 34 points and 12 rebounds. Georgia Amoore added 13 points. On Feb 18th the women’s team traveled to Louisville, KY to face Louisville winning 86-70 moving their record to 22-4. Kitley led the Hokies with 26 points and 13 rebounds while Amoore added 23 points and 10 assists.

The men’s baseball team traveled to Charlotte, NC to face Charlotte in a three-game series on Feb 16-18. The Hokies won game one 10-0 and game two 10-5 but lost game three 10-5 moving their record to 2-1.

The men’s and women’s track teams took part in two events this past weekend hosting the Virginia Tech Challenge on Feb 16-17 and the Terrier DMR Challenge in Boston, MA on Feb 16th. In the Virginia Tech Challenge, the women placed first in four events: the shot put, triple jump, long jump and the 3000m. The men placed second in the high jump, first in the long jump, third in the men’s weight throw and in the collegiate portion of the Challenge placed third and fourth in the 3000m. In the DMR Challenge the men placed first in the distance medley race.

The men’s tennis team hosted Georgetown on Feb 18th winning 7-0 and George Mason winning 7-0.

The #13 men’s wrestling team took on #22 Pittsburgh in Pittsburgh, PA on Feb 16th winning 26-12. The Virginia Tech men won seven of the ten bouts with bonus victories from Hunter Catka, Rafael Hipolito, and Mekhi Lewis.

The #21 women’s softball team traveled out to Arizona to take part in the Littlewood Classic on Feb 16-18. The first two games took place in Tempe, AZ with Tech winning both, defeating BYU 2-1 and Arizona State 9-0. The next two games took place in Pheonix, AZ where Tech lost both games to Cal 6-5 and Grand Canyon 11-2. The last game went back to Tempe, AZ which the Hokies won beating Illinois State 6-0 moving their record to 7-2-1.

The women’s lacrosse team traveled to Harrisonburg, VA to play the #4 James Madison Dukes on Feb 14th losing 17-5. On Feb 17th the women traveled to Macon, GA to face Mercer winning 21-8 moving their record to 2-1.

LIBERTY UNIVERSITY

The Liberty Flames men’s basketball team went to Huntsville, TX to face Sam Houston on Feb 17th losing 83-73 dropping their record to 16-10. Four players scored in double figures for Liberty led by Kaden Metheny with 19 points and Brody Peebles who had 17.

The women’s basketball team hosted Sam Houston on Feb 17th winning 86-56 moving their record to 12-14. Bella Smuda led the Lady Flames with 23 points and Asia Boone added 14.

The men’s baseball team hosted a three-game series against Quinnipiac on Feb 16-18 winning all three games 10-0, 16-7, and 10-5 moving their record to 3-0.

The men’s tennis team went to University Park, PA to play Penn State winning 4-0 and then traveled to Atlanta, GA winning 5-2.

The women’s lacrosse team hosted Longwood on Feb 17th, winning 16-4 moving their record to 1-2.

The women’s softball team played a series of games in Florida this past week. On Feb 14th the Lady Flames were in Orlando, FL playing UCF where they lost 7-5. Then the women participated in The Spring Games in Leesburg, FL on Feb 15-16 beating Coastal Carolina 2-1 and losing to Illinois 5-1 and Iowa 4-2 moving their record to 2-7.

The men’s track team took part in the Virginia Tech Challenge on Feb 17th in Blacksburg, VA. Tristian Merchant placed second in the men’s 3K.

The women’s tennis team lost to Furman on Feb 19th in Greenville, SC 4-3.

While he did not grow up here, he spent as much time as possible on the family farm, and eventually moved to Highland to continue the tradition, which he still pursues with his cousin.
