POCAHONTAS COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Warriors boys’ varsity baseball team lost their third game of the season losing to Richwood 7-6 on Thursday night March 21st.

BATH COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Chargers boys’ varsity baseball team won their season opener defeating Pocahontas County 10-9 in eight innings Wednesday night March 20th in Hot Springs. Ryan Ratcliffe hit a two-run bases loaded single to secure the win for Bath County in the bottom of the eight. The Chargers had 14 hits led by Greyson Walton with three and Remington Gordon, Issac Ingram and Ratcliffe two each. Ingram had three RBI and Jake Boguess drove in two. Ingram struck out 10 on the mound with Boguess picking up the win for the Chargers in relief over the last 2.2 innings. Wyatt Hendrick had three hits for the Warriors and Luke Gainer had three RBI. On March 21st Bath County played Pendleton County, losing 10-0 falling to 1-1 for the season. Ingram and Owen Purdue each had a single for Bath County.

The Chargers girls JV softball team lost their season opener to Pocahontas County Wednesday evening March 20th losing 9-7. Bayley Gardzinski and Cassidee Nicely each had two hits for Bath County with Nicely notching a triple. Nicely also had 15 strikeouts on the mound. The girls JV team lost to Pendleton County on March 21st 4-1 in a game that was stopped after three and half innings. Dylan Hicklin struck out five and surrendered one hit over three innings for the Chargers. Miguel Rosado had a hit and Brayden Rexrode scored the lone run for Bath County.

The Chargers varsity boys’ soccer team secured a home win Friday night March 22nd defeating Buffalo Gap 9-0. Luke Turner, Andrew Turner, and Wyatt Campbell scored goals for Bath County with Andrew Turner, Carter Hooker and Braxton Bragg adding assists. Goalie Frankie DeBoe had three saves for the shutout. On Friday night March 22nd the girls’ varsity soccer team played Bland County at home to a 1-1 tie. Laci Ryder scored the goal for Bath County and Zoey Jenkins had 10 saves.

On Tuesday March 26th the Chargers boys’ varsity soccer team lost on the road to Auburn 4-2 dropping their record to 2-2 for the season. Andrew Turner scored both goals for Bath County and DeBoe stopped six of 10 Auburn attempts.

The Chargers girls’ varsity soccer team played a game in the rain Tuesday night March 26th at home losing to Miller School of Albemarle 7-0 dropping their record to 0-3-1 for the season.

HIGHLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Rams boys’ varsity baseball team swept a double-header against Craig County Wednesday night March 20th moving their record to 2-0 in the Pioneer District, 4-1 overall. The Rams won 9-8 and 5-3. Zach Armstrong hit a walk-off homerun in the bottom of the fifth in the first game and pitched a complete-game victory in the nightcap. In the first game Armstrong had two hits, a triple along with a homerun, scored three times and drove in three runs for Highland. Evan Kimble reached base three times on a single and two walks. John Wagner picked up the win in the first game giving up nine hits and striking out four in a five-inning complete game. In the second game Wagner, Eli Moore, Elijah Good and Zack Wright all had a hit and an RBI.

The Rams girls JV softball team swept Craig County 13-3 and 11-1 on March 20th improving their record to 3-0.

The Highland Rams middle school track team took part in a 15-team field at the Amherst County Invitational on Friday March 22nd. The girls’ 4×100 meter relay (Brooklyn Bussard, Addison Lockridge, Makynley Smith, Brooke Williams) finished in third with a 58.25 time. Williams also placed eighth in the 400 meters and eighth in the long jump with a leap of 12’-2”. Kristina Neil placed ninth in the shot put with a toss of 23’-8”.

TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES

VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE

The Virginia Military Keydets men’s baseball team traveled to Birmingham, AL on March 23-24 to play Samford in a three-game series losing all three games 14-4, 16-9, and 5-4. The Keydets hit the road to face George Mason on March 26th losing 16-3 dropping their record to 12-14.

The men’s lacrosse team hosted Sacred Heart on March 23rd losing 18-8 dropping their record to 4-5.

The men’s and women’s track team took part in the Fred Hardy Invitational in Richmond, VA on March 22nd. For the men the Keydets placed first in the pole vault, 100-meter hurdles, hammer, discus throw and finished second in the collegiate 5000-meter run, long jump. VMI also took third in the long jump. For the women they took second in the discus throw and third in the pole vault.

The women’s polo team traveled to the state of New York to face #22 LIU losing 29-8 on March 23rd, losing to #17 Wagner College 24-14 on March 24th and ending the trip on March 24th losing to Villanova University 19-9 moving their record to 5-14.

JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY

The James Madison Dukes men’s basketball team upset 5th seeded Wisconsin 72-61 in the NCAA Men’s Basketball Championship tournament Friday night March 22nd advancing to the next round against Duke on March 24th where they lost by a score of 93-55 to a superior Duke team ending their season at 32-4. James Madison had four players score in double figures against Wisconsin led by Terrence Edwards, Jr, who had 14 points. Julien Wooden and T.J. Bickerstaff added 12 points each. Against Duke Edwards, Jr scored 13 points and Bickerstaff added 11 for JMU.

The men’s baseball team hosted Texas State in a three-game series on March 22-24. James Madison lost the first two games 11-5 and 8-1 before winning the last game 7-5. James Madison then faced Radford at home on March 26th, winning 12-2 moving their record to 15-10.

The men’s tennis team traveled to the state of Georgia to play a pair of matches against Georgia Southern in Statesboro, GA losing 4-0 on March 23rd and against Georgia State in Atlanta, GA losing 4-0 dropping their overall record to 7-9.

The women’s basketball team participated in the Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament hosting Stony Brook on March 21st losing 81-70 ending their season at 23-12. Peyton McDaniel scored 24 points and Carole Miller added 12 for James Madison.

The women’s lacrosse team played an away game against #9 Virginia on March 20th losing 12-8 then played another away game against Cincinnati on March 23rd winning 19-8 improving their record to 8-2.

The women’s softball team traveled to Troy, AL to play a three-game series against Troy on March 22-24, winning the first game 3-2 and losing the next two 8-0 and 6-2 dropping their record to 18-12.

The women’s tennis team hosted a pair of matches over the past weekend against Louisiana on March 23rd winning 4-1 and against Texas State on March 24th losing 4-2 dropping their record to 6-7.

The women’s track team took part in the Bob Davidson Team Challenge in High Point, NC on March 22-23, placing fifth in a field of 11 teams. Gracen King took third for James Madison with the 4×400 meter relay placing fourth.

UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

The University of Virginia Cavaliers #9 men’s baseball team traveled to Pittsburgh, PA on March 22-24 to play Pitt in a three-game series winning all three games 18-2, 10-4, and 8-2. The Cavaliers took care of business on March 26th defeating Richmond at home 15-5 moving their record to 21-4.

The #4 men’s lacrosse team hosted Drexel on March 23rd, winning 14-4 moving their record to 8-1.

The women’s swimming & diving team participated in the MCAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships in Athens, GA on March 20-23. The women won the national Championship for the fourth consecutive season finishing well ahead of Texas. The UVA women won a total of seven individual events and four of the five relays.

The #4 men’s tennis team faced off against #14 Florida State in Tallahassee, FL on March 24th winning 4-1. The men then squared off against Miami in Coral Gables, FL on March 25th winning 4-1 improving their record to 16-4.

The men’s and women’s track team hosted the Virginia Opener on March 23rd. For the Cavalier women they swept the women’s 1500-meter run while the men swept the men’s 1500-meter run. The women also placed first in the 100-meter race, swept the 200-meter race, first in the shot put, swept the high jump, second and third in the women’s 110-meter hurdles, first and second in the 400-meter hurdles, and swept the long jump. The men also took first in the 200-meter race, 400-meter race, first and second in the javelin throw, first in the hammer throw, swept the men’s pole vault, first and second in the men’s 110-meter hurdles, and first in the 400-meter hurdles.

The women’s basketball team participated in the Women’s Basketball Invitational Tournament hosting High Point on March 21st winning 81-59 and then playing Villanova in Villanova, PA on March 24th losing 73-55 to end their season at 16-16. Against High Point five players scored in double figures for UVA led by Paris Clark with 14 points and Camryn Taylor who had 13. Against Villanova Taylor and Kymora Johnson led Virginia with 12 points each.

The women’s lacrosse team hosted #7 Syracuse on March 23rd losing a close one 15-14 dropping their record to 9-2.

The women’s softball team hosted #11 Clemson in a three-game series on March 22-24, winning two of the three games 6-4 and 3-0 while losing the middle game 5-1. The Lady Cavaliers then faced Liberty in an away game on March 26th winning 3-1 moving their record to 21-10.

The #5 women’s tennis team played a pair of home matches over the weekend defeating Syracuse 5-2 on March 22nd and defeating Boston College 6-1 on March 24th moving their record to 15-2.

WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY

The West Virginia Mountaineers men’s baseball team won four of the five games played last week defeating Marshall at home on March 20th by a score of 15-0 before traveling to Norman, OK where West Virginia played a three-game series against Oklahoma on March 22-23 winning two games 9-5 and 8-3 after losing the opener 13-0. West Virginia then hosted Akron on March 26th winning 8-3 moving their record to 15-10.

The men’s golf team participated in The Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate in Charleston, SC on March 24-26. As a team West Virginia finished in eighth place. Max Green finished in a tie for fourth place for individual honors.

The men’s wrestling team participated in the 2024 NCAA Men’s Wrestling Championship Tournament in Kansas City, MO on March 21-23. Ty Watters finished in fourth place at 149-pounds and Peyton Hall finished in seventh place at 165-pounds for West Virginia.

The women’s basketball team took part in the 2024 NCAA Women’s Basketball Championship Tournament winning game one against Princeton 63-53 in Iowa City, IA on March 23rd then losing to Iowa 64-54 in the second round on March 25th. The Mountaineers ended their season at 25-8. Against Princeton J.J. Quinerly led West Virginia with 29 points and Jordan Harrison added 15. Against Iowa Quinerly again led West Virginia with 15 points and Kyah Watson chipped in with 13.

The women’s tennis team played in a pair of matches this past week defeating Houston at home on March 22nd 6-1 before losing to UCF at home on March 24th 5-2 moving their record to 13-6.

The women’s track & field team hosted the Stan Romanoski Open on March 22-23. The Mountaineers swept the women’s 800-meter run while taking first and second in the women’s 400-meter run.

VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY

The Virginia Tech Hokies #19 men’s baseball team swept a three-game series against Boston College in Brighton, MA on March 22-24 winning 9-6, 4-3, and 12-6. On March 26th West Virginia hosted Marshall winning 4-2 improving their record to 19-4.

The women’s swimming & diving team participated in the 2024 NCAA Women’s Swimming & Diving Championships in Athens, GA on March 20-23. The women’s team finished in 26th place overall.

The men’s and women’s track & field team took part in two events this past weekend in the Ole Miss Classic in Oxford, MI on March 22-23 and in the Weems Baskin Relays in Columbia, SC on March 22-23. The Hokies men took first in the 4×400-meter relay in the Weems Baskin Relays. The men also swept the 200-meter run and placed third in the high jump. In the Ole Miss Classic Virginia Tech took first in the men’s discus.

The men’s wrestling team took part in the 2024 Men’s Wrestling Championships in Kansas City, MO on March 21-23. Caleb Henson won the 149-pound weight class national title for Virginia Tech.

The women’s basketball team took part in the 2024 NCAA Women’s National Championship Tournament hosting the first two rounds on March 22-24. The women defeated Marshall in round one 92-49 advancing to the second round where they lost to Baylor 75-72 ending their season at 25-8. Against Marshall five Tech players scored in double figures led by Matilda Ekh with 21 points and Clara Stack who had 17. Olivia Summiel contributed 14 rebounds. Against Baylor Ekh scored 19 points while Georgia Amoore added 18 points and Strack had 18 points and 10 rebounds.

The men’s tennis team traveled to Florida to play a pair of teams losing to #14 Florida State 6-1 on March 22nd and defeating Miami 4-3 on March 24th. The Hokies improved their record to 9-7.

The women’s golf team participated in the Clemson Invitational on March 22-24 in Sunset, SC finishing in 15th place out of 16 teams.

The women’s lacrosse team played a pair of games this past week against Longwood at home winning 13-9 on March 20th and defeating Pitt 13-9 in Pittsburgh, PA on March 23rd moving their record to 8-4.

The #16 women’s softball team won two out of three games this past week defeating Maryland Eastern Shore at home 25-0 on March 20th before playing a two-game series against Alabama in Tuscaloosa, AL on March 22-23. Tech lost game one 1-0 before winning game two 8-3 moving their record to 25-5-1.

The women’s tennis team won a pair of games this past week at home defeating Boston College 4-3 on March 22nd and defeating Syracuse 6-1 on March 24th moving their record to 8-7.

LIBERTY UNIVERSITY

The Liberty Flames men’s baseball team traveled to Murfreesboro, TN to play Middle Tennessee in a three-game series on March 22-24. The Flames won games one and three 11-6 and 25-9 while losing game two 10-0. The guys then hosted #12 Wake Forest on March 26th losing 7-6 dropping their record to 10-14.

The men’s golf team participated in the General Hackler Championship in Myrtle Beach, SC on March 20th finishing 11th out of 14 teams.

The men’s tennis team won a pair of matches at home this past week defeating Richmond 7-0 on March 20th and defeating William & Mary 4-3 on March 23rd moving their record to 13-5.

The women’s and men’s track & field team took part in two events this past weekend with the Bod Davidson Team Challenge in High Point, NC on March 22-23 and hosting the Dr Jack M Toms Alumni Invitational March 22-23. In the Davidson Team Challenge the Liberty women swept the women’s hammer, took first in the women’s javelin, placed first in the women’s 800-meter run, second in the women’s 100-meter hurdles, second in the discus, second in the pole vault and placed third in the 4×400-meter relay. The Liberty men took second in the men’s hammer, placed first in the men’s 100-meter race, second in the 4×100-meter relay, third in the discus, and third in the men’s 1500-meter run.

The women’s lacrosse team hosted Louisville on March 21st, losing 11-8 moving their record to 3-6.

The women’s softball team hosted #21 Charlotte on March 20th winning 6-5 before traveling to Houston, TX to face Sam Houston in a three-game set on March 22-24. The Lady Flames won the first two games 4-0 and 7-6 then lost game three 8-5. The Lady Flames then took on Virginia at home on March 26th losing 3-1 dropping their record to 17-14.

The women’s tennis team won a pair of games this past week at home, defeating Sam Houston 4-0 on March 22nd and defeating George Washington 4-0 on March 24th moving their record to 10-5.

Scott Smith is the General Manager for Allegheny Mountain Radio and Station Coordinator and News Reporter for WVLS. Scott’s family has deep roots in Highland County. While he did not grow up here, he spent as much time as possible on the family farm, and eventually moved to Highland to continue the tradition, which he still pursues with his cousin. Unfortunately, farming doesn’t pay all the bills, so he has previously taken other jobs to support his farming hobby, including pressman/writer for The Recorder, and Ag Projects Coordinator for The Highland Center.
