POCAHONTAS COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Pocahontas County Warriors boys’ varsity baseball team hosted Pendleton County losing 16-1 on March 31st. The guys fell to 0-4 for the season.

The Warriors girls’ varsity softball team hosted Richwood WV on March 31st losing 10-0 falling to 0-4.

Both the Warriors boys’ varsity baseball and girls’ varsity softball teams got hammered by host Tygarts Valley on March 26th. The boys lost 24-0 as Tygarts Valley WV pitched a no-hitter, falling to 0-3 and the girls lost 24-9 dropping to 0-3.

HIGHLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Rams varsity softball team hosted the Bath County Chargers on March 26th winning 6-4 as Sarah Liller went the distance on the mound, allowing six hits for Bath and striking out seven. Ameila Good had two hits and drove in three runs while Peyton Neil added two hits and one RBI in addition to a game ending double play for the win. Trinity Forbes went 3-for-4 and had two RBI for the Chargers. Cassidee Nicely recoded five strikeouts on the mound for Bath shutting Highland out the last three innings. The Rams boys JV baseball team lost to Bath 20-0 dropping to 0-3. Owen Honaker, Levi Warner and Steven Rogers each had a hit for the Rams. Jace Armstrong and Warner combined for eight strikeouts on the mound. Cade Perdue went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and four RBI to lead the Chargers, Miguel Rosado had two hits and drove in six, while Akio Long, Dylan Hicklin and Jeffrey Hamilton also had two hits each.

BATH COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Bath County Chargers girls’ varsity softball team defeated Tygarts Valley WV 7-3 in a home contest on March 30th, moving their record to 0-1 in the Pioneer, 2-2 overall. Trinity Forbes led the Chargers with three hits and drove in two runs; Cassidee Nicely, Addie Lockridge, Kennedi Pritt, Georgia Watkins, Shiann Chaplin and Alyssa Ingram each had one hit while Nicely, and Makenna Randozzo, each walked twice. Nicely gave up five hits, struck out eight and walked three pitching for Bath County.

The Chargers boys and girls middle school baseball/softball teams hosted Shawsville with the Charger boys opening their season defeating Shawsville 10-1 on March 31st. Kason Carson, Cason Phillips, Parker Davis and Caleb Wolfe all took turns on the pitcher’s mound with Carson and Phillips each notching three strikeouts for Bath County. Carson had three hits and two RBI while Truman Stewart, Wyatt Randozzo and Harper Campbell each had two hits. Phillips, Randozzo and Wolfe each scored two runs, and Campbell joined Carson with two RBI. The Chargers girls lost to Shawsville 10-0. Atleigh Eye and Kendall Huffman both drew walks for Bath County. Addyson Neff took the loss, allowing five runs over three and two-thirds of an inning striking out seven and walking six with the Charger girls falling to 1-1.

The Chargers girls’ varsity tennis team lost to Eastern Montgomery 5-4 on March 30th falling to 0-1 in the Pioneer, 1-1 overall. While the Chargers won four of seven matches, they had to forfeit two matches at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles due to players being unable to play. For the Chargers Brooke Hess won at No. 1 singles, Adrianna Miller won at No. 3 singles and Aubryn won at No. 5. Hess and Cassie Thompson won at No. 2 doubles.

The Chargers boys’ varsity baseball team went on the road to face Narrows on March 30th, losing 7-2 moving their record to 0-1 in the Pioneer District, 2-1 overall. The Chargers were limited to four hits with Owen Perdue having two of them plus scoring a run. Luke Turner walked twice and stole three bases.

The Chargers girls’ varsity soccer team lost to Fort Chiswell 2-0 on March 27th on the road.

The Chargers middle school softball team hosted Highland County on March 26th winning 35-6 to open their season. The Rams fell to 0-1.

The Chargers girls’ varsity tennis team opened their season with a win on the road against Page County 7-2 on March 26th. Singles winners for the Chargers were Brooke Hess at No. 1, Sophie Ailstock at No. 2, Adrianna Miller at No. 3, Cassie Thompson at No. 4, and Aubryn Hooker at No. 5. Doubles’ winners were Ailstock and Miller at No. 1, while Hess and Thompson won at No. 2.

The Chargers boys’ varsity baseball team hosted Tygarts Valley WV on March 25th winning 12-2. Owen Perdue led the Chargers by going 4-for-4 and driving in five runs. Gunnar Whiddon added two hits and two RBI. Jake Boguess had a hit, three walks, scored two runs and drove in three runs. Cade Perdue walked twice and scored two runs and Luke Turner scored three runs and stole two bases. Nathan Hunt picked up the win for Bath County, allowing one unearned run and five hits, while striking out five in four innings, Owen Perdue pitched the final two frames.

TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES

UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

The University of Virginia Cavaliers men’s #9 ranked baseball team faced host Boston College in a three-game series on March 27-29 losing the first two games 5-3 and 17-0 before winning game three 3-1. The Cavaliers then hosted Old Dominion on March 31st winning 16-2 pushing their record to 23-7.

The men’s lacrosse team hosted #1 Notre Dame on March 28th winning 11-9 improving their record to 6-4. Brendan Million and Truitt Sunderland each led the Cavaliers with two goals and two assists.

The men’s #4 ranked tennis team picked up two road wins this past weekend defeating Florida State 4-0 on March 27th and the University of Miami 4-1 on March 29th, upping their record to 17-3.

The men’s and women’s track & field teams competed in the Raliegh Relays in North Caolina on March 26-28. The UVA women picked up first place finishes in the discus and javelin, third place finishes in the discus and shot put. The men picked a first-place finish in the hammer throw, second place finishes in the 5000-meter run, pole vault, triple jump and the hammer throw.

The women’s basketball team lost in the third round of the Women’s NCAA Championship to TCU 79-69 on March 28th, ending their season at 22-12. Paris Clark led the Cavaliers with 20 points and Kymora Johnson added 18.

The women’s #19 ranked lacrosse team hosted James Madison losing 11-10 on March 25th before picking up a win against Louisville 12-10 on the road on March 28th moving their record to 6-7. Against James Madison Jenna DiNardo led Virginia with three goals and an assist. Fiona Allen led Virginia with five goals against Louisville.

The women’s #13 ranked softball team hosted Liberty on March 25th winning 2-1 before hosting Pitt in a three-game series on March 27-29 winning all three games 10-0, 8-1 and 4-1 moving their record to 31-3.

The women’s #13 ranked tennis team hosted #24 Duke winning 4-2 on March 27th then defeated #5 North Carolina 4-3 at home on March 29th bettering their record to 15-4.

WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY

The West Virginia Mountaineers men’s baseball team played a three-game road series against Arizona State on March 27-29 winning games two and three 13-7 and 9-5 after losing game one 14-4. The Mountaineers, continuing their road trip, faced Arizona winning 7-4, improving their record to 20-5.

The women’s tennis team defeated Cincinnati 4-0 at home on March 28th, moving their record to 7-9.

The women’s track & field team competed in the Raleigh Relays in North Caolina on March 26-28, placing first in the high jump and third in the 10,000-meter invitational.

JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY

The James Madison Dukes men’s baseball team went on the road to face Arkansas State in a three-game series on March 27-29, losing game one and three 11-9 and 2-1 while winning game two 11-10 in extra innings. Continuing their road trip, JMU faced Georgetown on March 31st, winning 12-7, moving their record to 13-14.

The men’s golf team took part in the Seahawk Intercollegiate in North Caolina finishing in 15th place out of 15 teams.

The men’s tennis team defeated UNC Asheville in a home contest on March 27th, winning 7-0, moving their record to 10-6.

The women’s lacrosse team faced #19 Virginia on the road picking up a 11-10 win on March 25th, moving their record to 5-5. Aly Yee-Jenkins and Kaitlyn Carney each scored two goals for JMU.

The women’s golf team participated in the Liz Murphey Collegiate in Georgia on March 28-30, finishing in eighth place out of 16 teams.

The women’s softball team lost to George Mason in a road game 5-3 on March 25th before playing South Alabama in a three-game series at home on March 28-29 losing all three games 6-0, 5-2 and 6-1 dropping their record to 15-18.

The women’s track & field team competed in the Raleigh Relays in North Caolina on March 26-28.

VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY

The Virginia Tech Hokies men’s baseball team hosted Stanford in a three-game series on March 27-29, losing games one and three 9-7 and 6-3 while winning game two 10-2. The Hokies then faced Radford on the road on March 31st, winning 13-5 moving their record to 14-13 overall.

The men’s tennis team went on the road to face Miami and Florida State on March 27th and March 29th. The Hokies lost both matchups 4-0 and 5-1, dropping their record to 5-13.

The men’s and women’s track & field teams participated in two events over the past weekend in the Terry Long Florida State Relays and the Raleigh Relays. In the Raleigh Relays the Tech men finished second in the 10,000-meter run. In the Terry Long Floria State Relays the Tech women finished first in the long jump and second in the 100-meter hurdles.

The women’s golf team took part in the Clemson Invitational in March 27-29, finishing in eighth place out of 16 teams.

The women’s lacrosse team split two games this past week losing to #10 ranked Clemson 17-9 on the road on March 28th and defeating East Carolina 14-10 at home on March 31st, moving their record to 8-6. Lauren Render led Tech with six goals against Clemson. Ally Phalines tallied a hat trick for Virginia Tech against East Carolina.

The women’s #12 ranked softball team extended their winning streak to nine games when they went on the road to face Boston College on March 27-29 in a three-game series, winning all three games 11-0, 14-4 and 17-3, moving their record to 31-4.

VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE

The Virginia Military Keydets men’s baseball team went on the road to face East Tennessee State in a three-game series on March 27-29 losing the first two games 6-5 and 4-3 before winning game three 5-4. The Keydets then faced William & Mary in a road contest on March 31st winning 10-3, improving their record to 22-6.

The men’s lacrosse team hosted Cleveland State on March 28th losing 20-7 falling to 4-5. Beau Durkin led VMI with a hat trick.

The women’s water polo team hosted the VMI-MAAC Showcase on March 28-29. The Keydets lost to #21 Wagner College 23-9, defeated Siena College 20-19 and lost to LIU 19-9, moving their record to 7-14.

While he did not grow up here, he spent as much time as possible on the family farm, and eventually moved to Highland to continue the tradition, which he still pursues with his cousin.
