POCAHONTAS COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Pocahontas County Warriors boys’ varsity baseball team hosted Greenbrier West on Wednesday March 26th losing 8-2. Then the Warriors hosted the Highland County Rams on Thursday March 27th losing 14-10 dropping their record to 0-6 for the season. The Warriors led 6-1 after two innings but the Rams added runs in the next four innings as Highland took control. Logan Keatley went 3-for-4 with a triple and two RBI to lead Pocahontas. R.T. Hill went 2-for-4 with an RBI while Devon Burgess, Noah Dilley, Dylan Keller, Luke Gainer and Gary Warner each had a hit apiece. Dilley and Keller scored two runs apiece. For the Rams Evan Kimble had three hits, including two doubles and drove in four RBI, Eli Moore had two hits including a triple and three RBI, Patton Hull had two hits and scored twice, and Tristan Carpenter had two hits and two RBI. John Wagner scored four runs.

HIGHLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Highland County Rams boys’ varsity baseball team hosted Pendleton County on Wednesday March 26th losing 9-2. Patton Hull, Tristan Carpenter and Evan Kimble each had singles for the Rams as they were limited to three hits. Both Hull and Carpenter scored a run, while John Wagner and Kimble each had an RBI. On Saturday March 29th, the Rams boys hosted Narrows in a double-header losing both games 13-8 and 10-9. In the first game Armstrong, Wagner, Carpenter and Good all had two hits for Highland. Armstrong hit a solo home run. Wagner was saddled with the mound loss. In the second game for the Rams Moore had two hits including a three-run homer and drove in four runs, Wagner had two hits and had three RBI, while Armstrong went 2-for-2 with a solo home run and scored three runs. Hull took the loss on the mound. Armstrong, Moore and Hull combined to strike out seven, walk 12 and gave up nine hits. The boys’ varsity hosted Parry McCluer on Tuesday April 1st losing 18-3 dropping their record to 0-3 in the Pioneer District, 2-5 overall. Hull hit a two run double for the Rams while Wagner and Good each had a hit. Wagner knocked in a run. Armstrong took the mound for Highland giving up six runs, three earned in three innings. Levi Warner and Hull both pitched in relief. Between the three guys they struck out nine and walked 11.

The Rams girls JV softball team picked up a win on the road against Pocahontas County on Thursday March 27th winning 20-11. The Pocahontas County Warriors fell to 0-3. On Saturday March 29th the Rams JV softball team picked up a pair of wins against Narrows, winning 11-1 and 15-7 with Sarah Liller earning both wins on the mound by way of pitching complete games. Liller totaled eight innings and had nine strikeouts, while allowing 12 hits. Liller, Colleen Adams and Kristina Neil each had four hits in the double-header for the Rams, while Peyton Neil, Amelia Good, Ava Summers and Adelaide Baxter each had three hits. Payton Neil scored five runs, Liller scored four runs and Adams, Kristina Neil and Makynley Smith each scored three runs. On Tuesday April 1st the girls JV hosted Narrows winning 16-6 moving their record to 3-0 in the Pioneer, 5-1 overall. Adams and Peyton Neil each had three hits and scored three runs apiece to lead Highland. Kristina Neil also had three hits. Liller, Good, and Baxter each had two hits while Summers, Smith and Emma Brower all had one.

The Rams girls and boys track & field teams participated in an eight team meet at Richwood, WV on Friday March 28th. For the Rams boys Patton Hull placed second in the 200-meters and joined Elijah Good, Zach Armstrong and Eli Moore to place fourth in the 4×100-meter relay. Colleen Adams led the Highland girls with sixth place in the high jump, seventh place in the 100-meter dash and ninth place in the 200-meter dash.

BATH COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Bath County Chargers boys JV baseball team hosted Eastern Montgomery on Wednesday March 26th losing 16-6. Akio Long led the Chargers with two hits, a run scored and an RBI. Miguel Rosado, Dylan Hicklin and Michael Keyes had one hit apiece and Colton Wilhelm scored two runs. On Tuesday April 1st the boys JV team hosted Narrows winning 16-6 moving their record to 1-0 in the Pioneer, 1-2 overall. Hicklin and Keyes each had three hits and scored three runs apiece for the Chargers. Rosado, Wilhelm and Ike Phillips all had two hits and Cade Perdue, Jase Boguess and Long added one hit each. Phillips scored four runs, Wilhelm scored three and Phillips and Keyes had two RBI each. Hicklin, Perdue and Wilhelm all pitched for Bath County.

The Chargers boys’ varsity baseball team hosted Pendleton County on Thursday March 27th losing 11-6. Cooper Lowry led Bath going 3-for-4, Nathan Hunt went 1-for-3 with an RBI, while Isaac Ingram, Wyatt Campbell, and Owen Perdue added one hit apiece. Perdue had a triple for his hit and Campbell scored three runs. The boys’ varsity baseball team went on the road to face Narrows on Tuesday April 1st losing 13-3, moving their record 0-1 in the Pioneer, 0-4 overall. Owen Perdue had two hits for the Chargers and Nathan Hunt, Cooper Lowry, Gunner Whiddon, Mason Phillips and Jake Boguess each had a hit. Hunt’s hit was a double.  Perdue and Phillips each had an RBI. Lowry, Perdue, Hunt and Boguess all pitched for the Chargers, combining to allow nine hits and 13 runs of which 12 were unearned. They struck out six and walked five.

The Chargers girls’ varsity tennis team faced Stonewall Jackson on Thursday March 27th losing 8-1. Brooke Hess picked up the only point for Bath at No. 1 singles. On Tuesday April 1st the girls’ varsity went on the road to face Narrows losing 8-1 dropping their record to 0-1 in the Pioneer, 2-2 overall. Hess picked up the only point for the Chargers at No. 1 singles.

The Chargers girls’ varsity soccer team went on the road on Thursday March 27th to face Page County losing 3-0. The Chargers fell to 1-3-1 for the season.

The Chargers girls JV softball team hosted Buffalo Gap on Friday March 28th losing 20-0. Cassidee Nicely struck out eight for Bath County. On Tuesday April 1st the girls JV team won their first game of the season hosting Narrows winning 14-8 moving their record to 1-0 in the Pioneer, 1-4 overall. Nicely earned the victory for the Chargers striking out nine. Trinity Forbes and Makenna Randozzo each had three hits, with Forbes smacking an inside-the-park home run. Kennedi Pritt added two hits.

TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES

UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

The University of Virginia men’s baseball team hosted #20 Stanford in a three-game series on March 27-29 winning all three games 11-8, 13-7 and 9-8 in extra innings, moving their record to 15-11.

The #5 men’s tennis team won a pair of road game matches over the weekend defeating Notre Dame 4-3 on March 28th and defeating Louisville 4-1 on March 30th raising their record to 14-6.

The men’s lacrosse team hosted #8 Syracuse on March 29th losing 12-10 dropping their record to 5-5. McCabe Millon scored three goals and had three assists for Virginia.

The men’s and women’s track & field teams took part in the Raleigh Relays in North Carolina on March 27-29. The UVA women captured six first place finishes in the 1500-meter run, high jump, pole vault invitational, discus, hammer and javelin and had a third-place finish in the shot put. The UVA men had a first-place finish in the hammer, a second-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles and two third place finishes in the 1500-meter run and the triple jump.

The women’s golf team took part in the Chattanooga Classic in Tennessee on March 28-29, placing second out of 15 teams. Jaclyn LaHa placed second individually for Virginia.

The #8 women’s lacrosse team took on #8 Syracuse on the road on March 29th losing a tightly contested game 13-12 dropping their record to 7-4. Kate Galica and Jenna DiNardo scored three goals apiece for Virginia.

The #22 women’s softball team went on the road to face Notre Dame in a three-game series on March 28-30 losing the first two games 4-3 and 7-2 before winning the third game 6-4 in extra innings. On April 1 Virginia faced Maryland at home, winning 4-3 improving their record to 26-10.

The #5 women’s tennis team hosted a pair of matches this past week defeating Louisville 5-1 on March 28th and defeating Notre Dame 4-1 on March 30th raising their record to 15-4.

WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY

The West Virginia Mountaineers men’s baseball team traveled to Utah to play BYU on March 27-29 in a three-game series losing the first game 14-5 before winning the last two games 20-6 and 19-16. On April 1st the Mountaineers continued their road trip playing Ohio State winning 9-6 moving their record to 23-4.

The women’s track & field team participated in the Raleigh Relays in North Carolina on March 27-29. The West Virginia women earned a couple of second place finishes in the 10000-meter ruin invitational and high jump.

The women’s tennis team split pair of games on the road this past week defeating Houton 4-3 on March 28th and losing to #19 UCF 4-0 on March 30th, moving their record to 7-14.

JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY

The James Madison Dukes men’s baseball team hit the road to play Louisiana in a three-game series on March 28-30 losing all three games 5-2, 8-7 and 3-0. On April 1st, James Madison defeated George Mason 6-5, improving their record to 10-19.

The men’s tennis team hit the road to play Troy on March 29th losing 4—0 dropping their record to 5-9.

The women’s lacrosse team hosted a pair of games this past week losing to #5 Johns Hopkins on the road 17-8 on March 26th and defeating Charlotte 17-10 on March 29th, moving their record to 7-4. Savannah Derey and Maddie Epke each had hat tricks for James Madison.

The women’s softball team hosted California on March 26th losing 16-2 before hosting Appalachian State in a three-game series on March 28-30 losing all three games 8-0, 13-5 and 2-1 dropping their record to 11-20.

The women’s tennis team hosted Old Dominion on March 29th losing 4-0 dropping their record to 6-11.

The women’s track & field team participated in the Raleigh Relays in North Carolina on March 27-29.

VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY

The Virginia Tech Hokies men’s baseball team went on the road to face #16 Wake Forest in a three-game series on March 28-30 winning all three games 13-2, 11-8 and 6-5. On April 1st, the guy’s hosted Radford, losing 8-1 dropping their record to 20-9.

The men’s and women’s track & field teams participated in the Texas Relays on March 27-29 and the Raleigh Relays in North Carolina on March 27-29 and the Hokie men earned a second-place finish in the 200-meter dash in the Raleigh Relays.

The men’s tennis team went on the road this past week losing to Louisville 4-0 on March 28th and losing to Notre Dame 4-0 on March 30th dropping their record to 9-12.

The women’s lacrosse team went on the road to face #12 Duke on March 29th losing 15-6 dropping their record to 7-6. Kamryn Henson scored a hat trick for the Hokies.

The #12 women’s softball team hosted #16 Standford on March 28-30 winning all three games 4-3, 8-7 and 6-5 improving their record to 28-5.

The women’s tennis team lost a pair of matches this past week losing to Notre Dame 4-3 on March 28th and losing to Louisville 4-0 on March 30th, dropping their record to 11-10.

VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE

The Virginia Military Keydets men’s baseball team played several games this past week. The Keydets hosted George Washington on March 26th losing 10-8, hosted UNC Greensboro on March 28-30, in a three-game series, losing the first two games 9-7 and 13-12 before winning the third game 8-6. Then on April 1st VMI hosted Longwood winning 17-6, moving their record to 18-11.

The men’s lacrosse team went on the road to face Cleveland State winning 11-9, boosting their record to 8-2. Dayton Bagwell notched a hat trick for VMI.

The men’s and women’s track & field team participated in the Davidson Relays on March 29th. The VMI men placed third in the 800-meter run and had a couple of fourth place finishes in the 3000-meter run and the 4×400-meter relay. The VMI women earned a second-place finish in the 4×100-meter relay and 800-meter run, and a third-place finish in the 100-meter dash.

While he did not grow up here, he spent as much time as possible on the family farm, and eventually moved to Highland to continue the tradition, which he still pursues with his cousin. Unfortunately, farming doesn’t pay all the bills, so he has previously taken other jobs to support his farming hobby, including pressman/writer for The Recorder, and Ag Projects Coordinator for The Highland Center.
