BATH COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Chargers boys JV baseball team faced off against Eastern Montgomery Wednesday night March 27th in an away match-up winning 18-16 to start the season off in great manner. Bath County scored eight times in the top of the sixth to take the lead. Miguel Rosado, Matheu Spence and Hunter Kirby had three hits each for the Chargers and Gunnar Whiddon, Jase Boguess, Dylan Hicklin, and Braydon Rexrode had two apiece. Rosado and Spence both scored four times with Whiddon and Hicklin knocked three runs each. Spence, Hicklin, and Colton Wilhelm all pitched for the Chargers.  Wilhelm got the win, striking out three in the bottom of the six, giving up two hits and two walks.

On March 28th the Chargers JV baseball team met Highland in Monterey winning 29-2 moving their record to 2-1 for the season. For the Chargers Kirby was 4-for-5, with four runs and four RBI. Spence added three hits and scored three runs, Wilhelm and Whiddon scored four runs, Rosado scored three and Akio Long had three RBI. Hicklin pitched a complete game win, striking out six and walking three, while giving up one hit. Jake Herold of the Highland Rams had a hit and Levi Warner and Greg Meehan scored one run apiece. On the same night and location, the Chargers girls JV softball team took on Highland losing 7-4. Highland’s record improved to 4-0 for the season while Bath County fell to 0-2. For the Rams Sarah Liller earned the win on the mound and had four hits while recording seven strikeouts on the mound. Addison Lockridge added two hits and two runs scored while Adelaide Baxter also had two hits. Bayley Gardzinski had two hits, one being a solo home run, and two runs scored for Bath County. Trinity Forbes had two hits and two runs scored while Ava Whiddon added two hits.

The Chargers boys’ varsity soccer team dropped a match to Eastern Montgomery in an away match on Wednesday March 27th losing 5-1 moving their record to 0-1 in the Pioneer District, 2-3 overall. Andrew Turner scored the lone goal for Bath County.

HIGHLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Rams opened their 2024 track schedule Friday afternoon March 29th, competing in the Richwood High School Invitational. Jazmine Douglas had a great day for the Rams, winning the 200-meter dash (29.92), finishing second in the 100-meter dash (14.11), and joined Zalea Good, Colleen Adams and Briannah Moyers for a third-place finish in the 4×100-meter relay (57.60). For the guy’s Zach Armstrong placed fourth in the 400-meter dash (55.78). The boys’ 4×100-meter relay team (Armstrong, Jaden Veasey, Patton Hull and Eli Moore) finished in third (48.90) and the 4×400-meter relay team (Elijah Good, Hull, Moore and Armstrong) placed second (4:08.81).

TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES

VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE

The Virginia Military Keydets men’s baseball team played a three-game series against Wofford at home on March 28-30 winning games one and three 15-11 and 10-6 while losing game two 11-0. VMI then played a double-header against Virginia State in an away match-up on April 1st, winning both games 16-2 and 15-7. On April 2nd VMI lost to Norfolk State in Norfolk, VA 7-6 moving their record to 16-16.

The men’s lacrosse team won a pair of games last week defeating Mount St Mary’s 12-8 in Emmitsburg, MD on March 27th and beating Canisius at home 12-8 on March 30th moving their record to 6-5.

The men’s and women’s track & field team participated in the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, NC on March 28-30.

JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY

The James Madison Dukes men’s baseball team played Georgia State in a three-game series in Atlanta, GA on March 28-30 losing two out of the three games played. The Dukes won game one 14-6 but lost the last two games 7-2 and 8-7 dropping their record to 16-12.

The men’s tennis team lost two matches at home this past week, losing to Southern Miss 4-3 on March 28th and Louisiana 5-2 on March 30th moving their record to 7-11.

The women’s golf team participated in the Ironwood Invitational on April 1-2 in Greenville, NC, placing third out of 15 teams. Kendall Turner of JMU placed second individually while Amelia Williams placed sixth.

The women’s lacrosse team took on #10 Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, MD on March 30th losing 21-13 moving their record to 8-3.

The women’s softball team played Virginia at home on March 27th losing 12-3 before hosting Georgia State in a three-game series on March 28-30. The Lady Dukes won all three games 12-6, 6-1, and 8-1 improving their record to 21-13.

The women’s tennis team won a pair of away matches this past week against ULM 7-0 on March 28th and Arkansas State 5-2 on March 30th. James Madison now stands at 8-7 for the season.

The women’s track team participated in the Raleigh Relays held in Raleigh, NC on March 28-30 where Miranda Stanhope of JMU set a program record in 10,000-meters and Shannon Saunders set a personal best in the 10,000-meters race.

UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

The University of Virginia #9 men’s baseball team took on #11 Duke in a three-game series in Durham, NC on March 28-30 losing two games 9-4 and 7-3 while winning one 7-3. The Cavaliers then faced Old Dominion in a home match winning 4-0 on April 2nd moving their record to 23-6.

The #2 men’s lacrosse team faced #16 Harvard in Cambridge, MA on March 30th winning 13-10 moving their record to 9-1.

The men’s swimming and diving team placed 17th in the 2024 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships in Indianapolis, IN on March. Noah Nichols and Matt Brownstead both earned first-team All-American honors for their sixth-place finishes.

The men’s and women’s track teams participated in the Raleigh Relays held in Raleigh, NC on March 28-30. The women picked up a first-place finish in the 5000-meter race, second in the pole vault and in the 4×400-meter relay, and a pair of thirds in the high jump and long jump. The men picked up two firsts in the 10000-meter race and discus, a second and third in the 5000-meter race, second in the triple jump and third in the hammer.

The women’s golf team participated in the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, GA on March 29-30.

The #11 women’s lacrosse team lost a game to Duke 15-10 in Durham, NC on March 30th moving their record to 9-3.

The women’s softball team won three games this past week defeating James Madison 12-3 in Harrisonburg, VA on March 27th, then defeating Villanova in a double-header 5-2 and 5-1 in Villanova, PA on March 29-30 moving their record to 24-10.

WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY

The West Virginia Mountaineers men’s baseball team hosted Oklahoma State in a three-game series on March 29-31 losing the first two games 2-1 and 10-1 before winning game three 15-10 moving their record to 16-12.

The women’s track & field team participated in two events this past week, the Raleigh Relays in Raleigh, NC on March 28-30 and in the Carnegie Mellon Invitational in Pittsburgh, PA on March 30th.

VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY

The Virginia Tech Hokies #13 men’s baseball team hosted Pitt in a three-game series on March 28-30 winning two of the three games 5-3 and 6-5 while losing one game 7-6 moving their record to 21-5.

The men’s and women’s track & field team participated in three events this past week in the Texas Relays in Austin, TX on March 28-30, the Hornet Open in Lynchburg, VA on March 29-30, and in the Florida Relays in Gainesville, FL on March 29-30. For the men they finished first and fourth in the pole vault in the Texas Relays. The women placed second and fourth in the women’s pole vault. In the Florida Relays the men placed third in the 4×100-meter relays and second in the 4×400-meter relays. In the Hornet Open the men fished third in the 400-meter run, second in the triple jump and 4th in the shot put.

The women’s lacrosse team traveled to Clemson, SC to face Clemson on March 30th losing 15-4 moving their record to 8-5.

The #15 women’s softball team traveled to Durham, NC to face Duke in a three-game series on March 28-30 losing all three games 14-5, 6-5, and 5-2 dropping their record to 25-8-1.

The men’s swimming & diving team participated in the 2024 NCAA Men’s Swimming & Diving Championships on March 27-30 placing ninth.

The women’s tennis team lost a pair of matches to Wake Forest 4-3 on March 28th and to #10 NC State 6-1 on March 30th moving their record to 8-8.

LIBERTY UNIVERSITY

The Liberty Flames men’s baseball team hosted a three-game series against Sam Houston on March 28-30 winning all three games 6-4, 10-5, and 9-3. The guys then hosted #9 Duke on April 2nd losing 9-4 dropping their record to 13-15.

The men’s tennis team traveled to Florida to take on two teams winning both matches against Florida Atlantic 4-3 on March 27th and against South Florida 4-2 on March 29th moving their record to 15-5.

The men’s and women’s track & field team participated in three events this past week in the Raliegh Relays in Raleigh, NC on March 28-30, Florida Relays in Gainesville, FL on March 29-30, and the Hornet Open in Lynchburg, VA on March 29-30. In the Hornet Open the women placed first in the women’s hammer, third in the women’s javelin, first and second in the shot put, first in the women’s 400-meter hurdles. The men and women swept steeplechase titles. In the Florida Relays the women placed second and third in the pole vault, third in the hammer, third in the high jump. The men placed second in the hammer, second in the open discus and third in the invitational discus.

The women’s lacrosse team split a pair of games this past week losing to #11 Florida 23-3 on March 27th in Gainesville, FL and defeating Stetson at home 18-1 on March 29th moving their record to 4-7.

The women’s softball team hosted Louisiana Tech in a three-game series on March 28-30 winning all three games in shutouts 2-0, 3-0, and 2-0 moving their record to 20-14.

The women’s tennis team won two games at home last week defeating Radford 4-0 on March 29th and Richmond 4-0 on March 30th moving their record to 11-5.

While he did not grow up here, he spent as much time as possible on the family farm, and eventually moved to Highland to continue the tradition, which he still pursues with his cousin. Unfortunately, farming doesn’t pay all the bills, so he has previously taken other jobs to support his farming hobby, including pressman/writer for The Recorder, and Ag Projects Coordinator for The Highland Center.
