POCAHONTAS COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Warriors boys’ varsity baseball team played a double-header against Midland Trail on April 13th losing both games 9-5 and 5-4 moving their record to 0-5.

BATH COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Chargers girls’ varsity soccer team won their first match of the season, defeating Bland County 4-3 in Rocky Gap on Friday April 12th. Samantha Horne scored a hat trick in the second half to win it for Bath County and Laci Ryder scored a goal, along with an assist, for the Chargers. Zoey Jenkins recorded nine saves. The girls then faced Stuarts Draft at home on Tuesday April 16th losing 7-0 dropping their record to 1-5-1.

The Chargers girls JV softball team played in a split double-header at Eastern Montgomery on Saturday April 13th losing to Giles in game one 11-10 and Eastern Montgomery in game two 16-6. The girls JV team now stands at 0-3 in the Pioneer District, 0-5 overall.

The Chargers boys’ varsity baseball team took on Grace Christian in an away game on Tuesday April 16th losing 11-0 dropping their record to 0-1 in the Pioneer District, 1-3 overall. Cooper Lowry was the only Charger to reach base drawing a two-out walk in the top of the fourth. Nathan Hunt started and took the loss for Bath County, with both Issac Ingram and Lowry working in relief. The three together struck out eight batters and walked five.

The boys’ varsity soccer team faced Stuarts Draft in a home match on Tuesday April 16th losing a tight one 4-3 dropping their record to 0-1 in the Pioneer District, 2-4 overall. Andrew Turner and Braiden Mabe scored goals for Bath County and Frankie DeBoe had 21 saves at goal.

The girls’ varsity tennis team led 3-0 after doubles play on Tuesday April 16th before the match was suspended by rain.

HIGHLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Rams girls middle school track team participated in the Terrier Twilight Middle School Invitational at William Byrd High School on Friday April 12th finishing in a tie for sixth out of ten teams. Rams Brooke Williams won the 400-meter dash with a time of 1:07.02 and finished sixth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.99. The Lady Rams (Brooklyn Bussard, Addison Lockridge, Makynley Smith, and Williams) also finished fourth in the 4×100-meter relay with a 58.43 time. Kristina Neil placed fourth in the discus (55’-4”).

The Rams boys’ varsity baseball team traveled to Narrows on Saturday April 13th to play a double-header against Narrows losing both games 8-0 and 7-6 moving their record to 2-2 in the Pioneer District, 4-4 overall. In game one Patton Hull reached base twice with a walk in the first and a single in the third. Zach Armstrong pitched three innings, allowing six hits and five unearned runs and Eli Moore allowed three runs over one inning. In game two for the Rams Hull went 3-3 at the plate with two runs scored, John Wagner had two hits, including a solo home run. Evan Kimble also had two hits. Wagner went the distance for the Rams, surrendering seven hits and seven runs, while striking out five batters. The girls JV softball team also went to Narrows to face Narrows in a double-header on April 13th winning both games 8-1 and 18-17. The girls JV softball team then played Bath County in Hot Springs on Tuesday April 16th losing 18-17 dropping their record to 5-1 in the Pioneer District, 6-2 overall.

 

The Rams boys’ varsity baseball team and girls JV softball team went to Dunmore, WV to play Pocahontas County on Monday April 15th. Both games wound up being rained out as the boys contest was tied 7-7 in the fourth inning and the girls contest was 15-3 in favor of Pocahontas County.

The boys JV baseball team played Bath County at home on Tuesday April 16th and it counted as a scrimmage game due to the lack of umpires. The result was Bath winning 29-1.

TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES

VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE

The Virginia Military Keydets men’s baseball team traveled to Macon, GA to play Mercer in a three-game series on April 12-14 losing game one 10-2 then winning the last two games 11-8 and 11-5 moving their record to 20-19.

The men’s lacrosse team hosted Wagner on April 10th winning 14-10 and then traveled to Hamden, CT on April 13th to play Quinnipiac losing 13-12 dropping their record to 7-7.

The men’s and women’s track & field team participated in two events over the past weekend: the JMU Invitational on April 13th in Harrisonburg, VA and the Southside Power & Fitness Invitational on April 14th in Hickory, NC. In the JMU Invite the men placed second in the 110-meter hurdles, second in the 800-meter race, third and fourth in the 1500-meter run, fourth in the 400-meter dash, third in the 400-meter hurdles, and fourth in the pole vault. For the VMI women they placed third in the 3000-meter run. At the Power & Fitness Invitational VMI’s men placed first in the decathlon. For the women they placed second in the heptathlon.

The women’s water polo team traveled to Philadelphia, PA to face La Salle University and Wagner College on April 13th losing both matches 22-11 and 22-11 dropping their record to 5-19.

JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY

The James Madison Dukes men’s baseball team hosted Richmond on April 10th winning 14-4 before facing Old Dominion in a three-game series in Norfolk, VA on April 12-14. The guys won game two 7-5 but lost the other two games 7-1 and 6-3 dropping their record to 21-14.

The men’s golf team took part in the Mountaineer Invitational in Bridgeport, WV on April 15-16 finishing in fourth out of 16 teams. Sigurdur Blumenstein finished in a tie for 12th out of 91 golfers individually to pace the Dukes.

The men’s tennis team lost to Old Dominion 4-0 on April 13th to drop their record to 7-13.

The women’s lacrosse team faced #9 Florida in Tallahassee, FL on April 13th losing 15-7 dropping their record to 10-4.

The women’s softball team has won their last five games defeating Marshall in a three-game series at home 8-7, 7-5, and 11-3 on April 12-14 and defeating Longwood in a double-header at home 10-7 and 8-2 on April 16th. The Lady Dukes now currently stand at 26-16.

The women’s tennis team hosted a pair of matches against Coastal Carolina on April 13th and Georgia Southern on April 14th losing both matches 4-3 dropping their record to 8-11.

The women’s track & field team hosted the JMU Invite on April 13th and captured four event titles in the 100-meter dash, 3000-meter run, pole vault and the 200-meter dash. The Lady Dukes also placed second in the 3000-meter run, 800-meter run, high jump, and the triple jump. Third place finishes were earned in the 800-meter run, 400-meter dash, 1500-meter run and the 4×100-meter relay.

UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

The University of Virginia Cavaliers #10 men’s baseball team played Louisville in a three-game series in Louisville, KY on April 12-14 winning two games 21-3 and 16-7 while losing one game 14-10. Then the guys hit the road to play Old Dominion on April 16th losing 7-4 dropping their record to 28-9.

The #2 men’s lacrosse team faced #3 Duke in Durham, NC on April 14th losing 18-12 dropping their record to 10-2.

The #3 men’s tennis team continued their 12-game winning streak defeating Clemson at Clemson, SC on April 11th winning 5-2 and the defeating Georgia Tech in Atlanta, GA winning 7-0 moving their record to 20-4.

The men’s and women’s track & field team hosted the Virginia Grand Prix on April 12-13 and participated in the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, CA on April 11-13. In the Virginia Grand Prix both teams did very well with the men earning three firsts and six seconds and the women winning seven firsts, three seconds and six thirds.

The #11 women’s lacrosse team faced #3 Boston College at home on April 13th winning 13-12 in overtime improving their record to 12-3.

The women’s softball team hosted NC State in a three-game series on April 12-14 winning two games 2-0 and 3-2 while losing one game 10-9. The women also hosted #15 Virginia Tech on April 16th losing 6-0 dropping their record to 28-14.

The #5 women’s tennis team hosted #19 University of Miami on April 12th winning 6-1 and also hosted #23 Florida State on April 14th winning 4-2 moving their record to 20-3.

WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY

The West Virginia Mountaineers men’s baseball team hosted #17 UCF in a three-game series on April 12-14 winning all three games 7-6, 7-5, and 11-10. Then the guy’s hosted Pitt on April 16th winning 6-3 improving their record to 23-13.

The men’s golf team hosted the Mountaineer Invitational on April 15-16 finishing in first place. Six West Virginia golfers finished in the top ten individually.

The men’s and women’s swimming & diving team participated in the 2024 TYR Pro Swim Series in San Antonio, TX April 10-13. Both teams hoped to gain experience from this to qualify for the 2024 Olympic Trials.

The women’s tennis team traveled out west to face Texas Tech in Lubbock, TX on April 11th losing 4-0 and BYU in Provo, UT losing 4-0 dropping their record to 14-11.

The women’s track & field team took part in two events this past week: the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, CA on April 12-13 and the Bison Outdoor Classic in Lewisburg, PA on April 13-14. Several of the WVU women set personal bests in their respective events in each of the two meets.

VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY

The Virginia Tech Hokies men’s baseball team hosted Liberty on April 10th winning 13-3 then traveled to Atlanta, GA to play Georgia Tech in a three-game series on April 12-14. The Hokies won game one 11-1 but lost the next two 19-0 and 11-7. Virginia Tech got back on the winning track defeating Radford 7-1 in a home game on April 16th moving their record to 24-10.

The men’s tennis team lost a pair of matches this past week to Georgia Tech 5-2 in Atlanta, GA on April 11th and to Clemson 5-2 in Clemson, SC on April 13th dropping their record to 10-10.

The men’s and women’s track & field team participated in the Tom Jones Memorial Invitational in Gainesville, FL on April 12-13. The men placed first in the hammer throw, picked up a second in the discus and third in the 400-meter dash invite. The women picked up a second in the hammer throw along with a second and third in the 200-meter dash.

The women’s lacrosse team played in a pair of home games this past week defeating Old Dominion 18-5 on April 10th and then losing to #1 Notre Dame 20-9 moving their record to 9-7.

The #15 women’s softball team hosted Boston College in a three-game series on April 12-14 winning all three games 12-2, 9-0, and 13-4. The women then played Virginia in Charlottesville, VA winning 6-0 improving their record to 32-9-1.

LIBERTY UNIVERSITY

The Liberty Flames men’s baseball team took on #16 Virginia Tech in an away game on April 10th losing 13-3. The guys then hosted Jacksonville State in a three-game series on April 12-14 winning two of the three games 7-2 and 12-6 while losing one game 6-5. The Flames then hit the road to face VCU on April 16th losing 2-1 dropping their record to 17-19.

The men’s golf team finished out their regular season participating in the Mossy Oak Collegiate in West Point, MS on April 15-16 finishing fifth out of 14 teams.

The men’s tennis team faced UNCW on April 13th, losing 4-3 dropping their record to 16-7.

The men’s and women’s track & field team participated in several events around the country: the Pacific Coast Invitational on April 11th in Long Beach, CA, the Bryan Clay Invitational on April 11-13 in Azusa, CA, the Virginia Grand Prix on April 12-13 in Charlottesville, VA, the Dennis Craddock Coaches Classic on April 12th in Lynchburg, VA and the Jim Bush Legends Invitational on April 13th in Los Angeles, CA. The women placed first in the javelin at the Pacific Coast Invitational and in the Jim Bush Legends Invitational. The women also placed first in the 100-meter hurdles in the Virginia Grand Prix. The guys placed first in the javelin in the Jim Bush Legends Invitational.

The women’s lacrosse team played in a pair of games this past week losing to #5 Notre Dame 12-5 at home on April 11th and beating Kennesaw State 15-12 on April 13th in Kennesaw, GA moving their record to 5-10.

The women’s softball team traveled to Murfreesboro, TN on April 12-14 to play Middle Tennessee in a three-game series winning all three games 8-1, 5-1, and 4-3 moving their record to 26-16.

The women’s tennis team won two matches this week defeating UTEP in El Paso, TX 4-0 on April 12th and defeating New Mexico State 4-1 in Las Cruces, NM on April 13th moving their record to 15-5.

While he did not grow up here, he spent as much time as possible on the family farm, and eventually moved to Highland to continue the tradition, which he still pursues with his cousin. Unfortunately, farming doesn’t pay all the bills, so he has previously taken other jobs to support his farming hobby, including pressman/writer for The Recorder, and Ag Projects Coordinator for The Highland Center.
