POCAHONTAS COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Warriors boys’ varsity baseball team cruised to a big win against Bath County on Monday April 22nd in Hot Springs, VA winning 19-2. Luke Gainer went 4-for-4 with two runs scored and five RBI for Pocahontas. Warren Burns and Chris Williams both had three hits and Logan Keatley belted two doubles and drove in five runs. Wyatt Hendrick got the win for the Warriors allowing one run over 3.2 innings. Nathan Hunt and A.J. St. Clair slashed two hits each for the Chargers, while Jake Boguess, Cooper Lowry, Owen Perdue, and Bransen Gordon all had one hit. Boguess, Remington Gordon, Lowry, and Hunt all pitched for Bath County with Boguess taking the loss. Bath County dropped their record to 0-3 in the Pioneer District, 1-6 overall.

The Bath County Chargers JV softball team had 17 hits in taking down the Lady Warriors 20-12 in Dunmore, WV on Monday April 22nd. Bayley Gardzinski and Chloe Forbes both had three hits, scored two runs, and drove in three for Bath County. Kiana Williamson also had three hits, while Trinity Forbes, Caleigh Hazelwood, Embrie Hazelwood, and Alyssa Ingram had two each. Trinity Forbes and Caleigh Hazelwood both had three RBI.

BATH COUNTY SCHOOLS

The boys’ and girls’ varsity track & field team participated in a meet at Staunton High School on Wednesday April 17th. Chargers Natalie White won the 1600-meter run for Bath County with a time of 5:55.17. Abbey Phillips was the lone competitor in the 100-meter hurdles, coming in with a time of 21.66. Laci Ryder placed third in the 200-meter dash with a 31.26 and sixth in the 100-meter dash with a 14.78. White placed fourth in the 800-meter run with a 2:48.92. Matt Harold placed seventh for the guys in the 800-meter run with a 3:19.62. The girls’ team finished third in the four-team event.

The boys’ varsity & JV baseball teams traveled to Elliston, VA to face Eastern Montgomery in a district match-up on Thursday April 18th losing 13-8. A.J St. Clair went 3-for-3 for Bath County with Jake Boguess, Owen Perdue and Nathan Hunt getting two hits apiece. Boguess scored two runs and drove in two, Issac Ingram had two RBI and both Hunt and Greyson Walton scored twice. Boguess took the loss for Bath in relief of Ingram who was the starter. Remington Gordon recorded the final two outs in the sixth inning. Together the three struck out four batters, walked eight and gave up nine hits. The JV team defeated Eastern Montgomery 11-1. Dylin Hicklin struck out 11 and earned his second win of the season. He gave up just two hits, walked six and hit two batters. Gunnar Whiddon had three hits and three RBI for Bath County and Miguel Rosado, Matheu Spence, Braydon Rexrode and Jeffrey Hamilton all had two hits. Rosado and Spence scored three times each and Hicklin scored twice and had two RBI.

The boys’ varsity baseball team faced Craig County on Friday April 19th at home, losing 11-7. Cam Lowry and Ryan Ratcliffe had two hits each for the Chargers and both Ratcliffe and Walton scored two runs apiece. Lowry, Hunt, and Gordon all pitched for the Chargers combining to strike out six and walk six. Hunt was saddled with the loss.

The girls’ varsity tennis team hit the road to face Buffalo Gap on Thursday April 18th losing 6-3. Bath County winners were Brooke Hess at No. 3 singles, Sophie Ailstock at No. 6 singles, and Ailstock and Adrianna Miller at No. 3 doubles. The girls then faced Bland County at home on Monday April 22nd in a match winning 7-2 to even their record at 1-1. Abbey Phillips, Brooke Hess, Alyssa DePoppe and Sophie Ailstock all had singles wins for Bath with Ailstock teaming up with Miller in doubles along with Sadie Alphin and Phillips, and Hess and DePoppe to sweep the doubles for the Chargers.

The boys’ varsity soccer team hosted Eastern Mongomery in a match on Thursday April 18th, losing 6-0. Bath County goalkeeper Frankie DeBoe had seven saves. On Friday April 19th Bath faced Craig County in New Castle, VA winning 12-0 moving their record to 1-2 in the Pioneer District, 3-5 overall. Andrew Turner, Luke Turner, and Braiden Mabe all scored hat tricks for the Chargers. Andrew Turner led the Chargers with five goals and three assists, Luke Turner scored three goals and one assist and Mabe scored three goals and two assists. Miguel Malpica added a goal and Carter Hooker had an assist for the Chargers.

The girls’ varsity soccer team faced Auburn in a home match on Friday April 19th losing 8-0. On Tuesday April 23rd the girls faced Miller School of Albemarle near Charlottesville, losing 6-0 dropping their record to 1-7-1. Bath goalkeeper Zoey Jenkins stopped 16 shots against Miller School.

The girls JV soccer team met James River in a match played in Springwood on Thursday April 18th losing 5-1 in their first match of the season. Breiana Moore scored the lone goal for the Chargers. Goalkeeper Jaeda Jenkins had six saves.

HIGHLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS

The boys’ varsity baseball team hosted Richwood in a game on Thursday April 18th winning 10-2 moving their record to 2-2 in the Pioneer District, 5-4 overall. Rams John Wagner and Zach Armstrong combined for 13 strike outs. Wagner started the game and went 6.1 innings, scattering seven hits, allowing two runs, striking out 11 and walking two. Armstrong struck out two batters. Wyatt Clevinger and Zack Wright had two hits each and two RBI apiece, Armstrong had two hits and an RBI and Evan Kimble hit a solo homerun to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning. Wagner and Tristian Carpenter had one hit each as the Rams collected nine hits. The Rams stole 11 bases with three each coming from Wagner and Armstrong and two from Eli Moore.

The girls JV softball team hosted Richwood in a game on Friday April 19th losing 18-2 dropping their record to 5-1 in the Pioneer District, 6-3 overall. Addison Lockridge and Annah Moyers had two hits each for the Rams while Peyton Neil and Kristina Neil had one hit apiece. Lockridge and Moyers scored one run each. Sarah Liller had six strikeouts on the mound for the Rams.

The boys’ and girls’ varsity track team participated in a eight-team Lumberjack Invitational in Richwood, WV Tuesday April 23rd. The boys scored 36.33 points placing fourth and the girls scored 17 points. For the Rams Jazmine Douglas placed 2nd in the 100-meters with a 14.10 time, 4th in the 200-meters with a 30.20 time, Zalea Good placed 5th in the 400-meters with a 1:16.82 time, Colleen Adams tied for 4th in the high jump with a 4’-2” jump, Annah Moyers placed 3rd in the long jump with a 13’-11” leap, Eli Moore placed 3rd in the 400-meters with a 56.82 time and John Wagner placed third in the shot put with a 35’-8 ½” toss. The girls (Douglas, Good, Adams, and Moyers) placed second in the 4×100-meter relay.

TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES

VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE

The Virginia Military Keydets men’s baseball team picked up four wins this past week defeating James Madison 10-9 on April 17th at home, then hosting The Citadel in a three-game series on April 19-21 where they lost game one 7-1 then won the last two games 10-2 and 6-5 in extra innings. On April 23rd VMI traveled to Williamsburg, VA to play William & Mary, defeating them 14-5 to move their record to 24-20 for the season.

The men’s lacrosse team ended their season with a loss to Marist 14-10 at home on April 20th, moving their record to 7-8.

The men’s and women’s track & field team competed in the UVA Challenge on April 19-20 in Charlottesville, VA. Several of the VMI athletes earned personal bests in their respective events.

JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY

The James Madison Dukes men’s baseball team lost to VMI 10-9 on April 17th in Lexington, VA before hosting Georgia Southern in a three-game series on April 19-21 winning all three games 15-6, 9-1, and 8-4. James Madison then hosted Maryland on April 23rd losing 6-4 dropping their record to 24-16.

The men’s tennis team played Coastal Carolina in the Sun Belt Conference Tournament on April 18th losing 4-2 to end their season at 7-14.

The women’s golf team took part in the Sun Belt Conference Championship in Point Clear, AL on April 15-18 finishing 10th out of 13 teams.

The women’s lacrosse team hosted Vanderbilt on April 20th winning 17-8 improving their record to 11-4.

The women’s softball team kept their winning streak alive against Appalachian State in a three-game series in Boone, NC on April 19-20. The Lady Dukes won all three games 10-2, 5-4, and 8-2, improving their record to 29-16 winning their last eight games.

The women’s tennis team lost to Marshall in an away match 6-1 on April 20th dropping their record to 8-12.

The women’s track & field team participated in the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, VA on April 19-20. The JMU women picked up a first in the pole vault and third in the 400-meter dash.

UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

The University of Virginia Cavaliers #14 men’s baseball team hosted George Mason on April 17th winning 11-5 before hosting Georgia Tech in a three-game series on April 19-21 where they won one game 8-7 in extra innings and lost two games 13-2 and 17-12. The guys then hosted Liberty on April 23rd in a home match-up winning 14-4 moving their record to 31-11.

The men’s golf team participated in the ACC Golf Championships in Charlotte, NC on April 19-21.

The #4 men’s lacrosse team lost to #7 Syracuse in Syracuse, NY 18-17 on April 20th moving their record to 10-3.

The #2 men’s tennis team defeated Clemson 4-1 on April 19th then defeated #12 Duke 4-1 on April 20th to advance to the finals of the ACC Tennis Championships in Cary, NC where they lost to #17 Florida State 4-3.

The men’s and women’s track & field team hosted the Virginia Challenge on April 19-20. For the Cavalier men they picked up firsts in the 5000-meter run, 400-meter hurdles, pole vault invite and discus. Second places came in the 3000-meter steeplechase invite, 800-meter invite, 110-meter hurdles, and 4×400-meter relay. Third places came in the 800-meter invite, 110-meter hurdles, and hammer. The Lady Cavaliers picked up five first in the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 4×100-meter relay, high jump, and the pole vault invite. Second place finishes came in the 4×400-meter relay, high jump, 400-meter hurdles, and the high jump invite. Third place finishes came in the discus.

The #6 women’s lacrosse team faced Virginnia Tech in Blacksburg on April 17th coming away with a 14-12 victory moving their record to 13-3.

The women’s softball team played #3 Duke in a three-game series in Durham, NC on April 19-20 losing the first game 1-0 in extra innings before taking the next two games 4-3 and 3-2. The women then hosted #15 Virginia Tech on April 23rd losing 6-0 dropping their record to 30-16.

The #4 women’s tennis team took part in the ACC Championship Tournament in Cary, NC on April 19-21 defeating Notre Dame 4-0 and #23 Florida State 4-0 before losing to #5 North Carolina in the championship match 4-1. The Lady Cavaliers now stand at 22-4 for the season.

WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY

The West Virginia Mountaineers men’s baseball team took on Texas Tech in a three-game series in Lubbock, TX on April 19-21 losing all three games 15-2, 6-4, and 3-1 dropping their record to 23-16.

The men’s golf team participated in the Big 12 Golf Championship in Trinity, TX on April 22-23 finishing in fifth place out of 14 teams.

The women’s tennis team lost in the first round of the Big 12 Tennis Championships in Stillwater, OK on April 17th to Baylor 4-2 ending their season with a 14-12 record.

The women’s track & field team took part in two events this past weekend in the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, Va on April 19th and hosting the Mountaineer Twilight on April 20th. The WVU women swept the 800-mter race in the Mountaineer Twilight and took first places in the 200-meter dash and the 400-meter dash. The Lady Mountaineers also placed second in the 1500-meter run.

VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY

The Virginia Tech Hokies men’s baseball team played #7 Duke in a three-game series at home on April 19-21 losing two games 9-8 in extra innings and 13-10 and winning one game 2-1 in extra innings. On April 23rd the Hokies played George Mason at home winning 24-5 moving their record to 26-12.

The men’s golf team participated in the ACC Men’s Golf Championship in Charlotte, NC on April 19-21. The Hokie men finished in 12th place out of 12 teams.

The men’s tennis team participated in the ACC Men’s Tennis Championships in Cary, NC on April 18th and lost in the first round to Florida State 4-1 ending their season at 10-11.

The men’s and women’s track & field team took part in multiple events this past week: the Wake Forest Invitational in Winston-Salem, NC on April 19th, the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, VA on April 19-20, and the USC open in Columbia, SC on April 20th. In the Wake Forest event both the men and women placed third in the 1500-meter invite. In the Virginia Challenge the guys placed second in the triple jump, first and third in the men’s high jump. The women placed second in the collegiate hammer throw in addition to a first place in the women’s shot put. In the USC Open the guys placed first and second in the men’s pole vault, the women tied for second in the collegiate pole vault.

The women’s golf team participated in the ACC Women’s Golf Championship in Wilmington, NC on April 18-20. The Lady Hokies finished eight out of 12 teams.

The #15 women’s softball team hosted Georgia Tech for a three-game series on April 19-21 winning all three games 8-4, 10-4, and 11-2. On April 23rd the Lady Hokies faced Virginia at home, winning 6-1 moving their record to 36-9-1.

The women’s tennis team took part in the ACC Women’s Tennis Championships in Cary, NC on April 17-18 winning their first match against Louisville 4-2 before losing to Miami in the next round 4-0 ending their season at 9-13.

LIBERTY UNIVERSITY

The Liberty Flames men’s baseball team traveled to Bowling Green, KY to face Western Kentucky in a three-game series losing all three games 6-4, 10-7, and 5-4. The men then faced #14 Virginia in Charlottesville on April 23rd losing 14-4 dropping their record to 17-23.

The men’s tennis team took part in the Conference USA Men’s Tennis Championships in Murfreesboro, TN on April 20-21. The guys won their first-round match-up against Jacksonville State 4-2 but lost in the next round to Middle Tennessee 4-2 ending their season at 17-8.

The men’s and women’s track & field team participated in two events this past weekend: the Virginia Challenge in Charlottesville, VA on April 19-20 and hosting the Wildcat Invitational on April 20th. In the Virginia Challenge the Liberty men had two first places in the hammer and 200-meter dash. They also placed third in the discus. The women placed first in the 100-meter hurdles and third in the javelin. In the Wildcat Invitational the women placed third in the 1500-meter run.

The women’s lacrosse team defeated Lindenwood 14-10 on April 20th in St. Charles, MO moving their record to 6-10.

The women’s softball team hosted New Mexico State in a three-game series winning two games 8-7 in extra innings and 4-3 while losing one game 6-2. The women then faced Longwood in Farmville, VA winning 9-3 on April 23rd moving their record to 29-18.

The women’s tennis team took part in the Conference USA Women’s Tennis Championships in Miami, FL on April 19-21. The Lady Flames won their first two matches against New Mexico State 4-0 and Jacksonville State 4-0 before losing to FIU 4-1 to end their season at 17-6.

While he did not grow up here, he spent as much time as possible on the family farm, and eventually moved to Highland to continue the tradition, which he still pursues with his cousin. Unfortunately, farming doesn’t pay all the bills, so he has previously taken other jobs to support his farming hobby, including pressman/writer for The Recorder, and Ag Projects Coordinator for The Highland Center.
