POCAHONTAS COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Pocahontas County Warriors boys’ varsity baseball team hosted Tygarts Valley on Monday April
28 th losing 15-4 dropping their record to 0-11-1 for the season. Dylan Keller and Warren Burns both
had two hits for the Warriors while Ricky Osborne, Luke Gainer, Logan Keatley and Gary Warner
each had a hit. Osborne’s hit was a double. Keller, Gainer and Keatley each had an RBI. Keller, Burns,
Gainer and Keatley also scored one run apiece.
On Friday, April 25th, the Warriors girls’ varsity softball team played against Webster County at
home. The game ended with a score of 4-0 in favor of Webster County. This result placed the Warriors
at 0-1 in the Potomac Valley and 1-5 overall.
HIGHLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Highland County Rams boys’ varsity baseball team hosted Craig County on Thursday April 24 th
winning 19-4. Highland scored nine times in the third inning keyed by a grand slam homerun by Zach
Armstrong. John Wagner hit a two-run shot in the fourth inning. Armstrong had two hits, scored
three runs and had five RBI for the Rams. Elijah Good added three hits and four RBI, while Eli Moore
and Levi Warner added two hits each as the Rams had 12 hits overall. Moore had a double as one of
his hits. Patton Hull, Moore and Tristan Carpenter all scored three times and Wagner and Warner
drove in three runs apiece. Zack Wright pitched four innings for the Rams, allowing only two hits and
one unearned run in picking up the win for the Rams. Moore, Good and Hull all pitched in relief.
On Monday April 28 th the Rams boys’ varsity baseball team and the girls JV softball team hosted Bath
County with the boys’ varsity taking down Bath 13-8 for their sixth straight win running their record
to 5-3 in the Pioneer District, 8-5 overall. Bath County fell to 3-3 in the Pioneer, 3-6 overall. Wagner
got the W for the Rams pitching five complete innings before Armstrong came on in relief, who retired
all six batters from Bath in the final two innings. Evan Kimble had three hits and drove in four RBI,
Good also had three hits and scored a run, Hull had three hits and drove in two runs and scored four
runs, Armstrong scored three runs and had two RBI. Moore and Carpenter each added a hit while
Levi Warner, Good, Carpenter and Kimble scored a run apiece. The Rams girls JV softball team came
away with a win, defeating Bath 14-3 raising their record to 8-2 for the season. The Chargers JV team
fell to 2-8. The Rams girls scored 10 runs in the bottom of the first inning. Payton Neil had three hits
and scored four runs for the Rams, with Sarah Liller, Kristina Neil, Amelia Good and Emma Brower
adding two hits apiece. Liller struck out nine batters on the mound and picked up the W. Bailey Wolfe
had two hits for Bath County and both Trinity Forbes and Kennedi Pritt had one hit each. Cassadee
Nicely struck out two Rams batters.
Both the Rams boys’ varsity and JV track teams and the girl’s JV track team participated in the
Augusta County Invitational at Wilson Memorial High School on Friday April 25 th . For the boys Elijah
Good, Patton Hull, Zach Armstrong and Eli Moore finished third in the 4×100-meter relay and fifth in
the 4×400-meter relay. For the girls they won the JV meet with 44 points. Brooke Williams led the
way for Highland with a first in the long jump, a second in the 100-meter dash and a third in the 200-
meter dash. Kristina Neil won the discus and placed third in the shot put while Amelia Good was sixth
in the 200-meter dash and eighth in the 100-meter dash. The boys JV team had Steven Rogers
placing fourth in the shot put and discus and Owen Honaker placing fifth place in the long jump.
The Rams boys and girls JV track teams participated in a meet on Tuesday April 29 th at Strasburg. Not
a whole lot of details were provided at press time, but Brooke Williams managed to set the Highland
High School record while winning the 400-meter dash. She also won the 100-meter dash.

BATH COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Bath County Chargers girls’ varsity soccer team hosted Fort Chiswell on Wednesday April 23 rd
securing a 2-2 draw. Samantha Horne and Laci Ryder scored goals for the Chargers as they came back
from a 2-0 deficit at the half. The girls’ soccer team faced Miller School on the road on Friday April
25 th losing 5-0 dropping their record to 3-6-2. Goalkeeper Anna Essex had 15 saves for Bath County.
The Chargers boys’ varsity baseball team went on the road to face Eastern Montgomery on Thursday
April 24 th losing 22-12 dropping their record to 3-2 in the Pioneer, 3-5 overall. Owen Perdue and
Nathan Hunt both went 3-for-3 for Bath County as Perdue scored three times and had two RBI, while
Hunt scored twice and knocked in two runs. Wyatt Campbell, Gunnar Whiddon and Cooper Lowry
each had two hits. Lowry started for the Chargers and took the loss. Hunt, Issac Ingram and Marc
Durney pitched in relief for the Chargers.
Both the Chargers boys JV baseball team and the girls JV softball team hosted Eastern Montgomery
on Thursday April 24 th with the boys JV losing 13-1 dropping their record to 1-4. Ike Phillips went 2-
for-2 for the Chargers with an RBI and a stolen base. Dylan Hicklin was 1-for-1 with a run and a walk,
and both Michael Keyes and Easton Roberts drew walks. Bath’s girls JV softball team lost 8-5. Alyssa
Ingram had four hits, including a triple, for Bath County, while Cassidee Nicely, Kennedi Pritt and
Makenna Randozzo each had two hits. Pritt had four RBI and Randozzo knocked in one.
The Chargers girls’ varsity tennis team took care of business against James River on the road on
Tuesday April 29 th defeating James River 7-2 raising their record to 3-3. Brooke Hess, Alyssa
DePoppe, Kelsey Eaton, Adrianna Miller and Chloe Fewell had singles wins for Bath County, while the
tandem of Hess and DePoppe, Eaton and Fewell won in doubles.
The Chargers boys JV baseball team lost to Eastern Montgomery 4-2 on Tuesday April 29 th dropping
their record to 1-5. Gunnar Whiddon struck out nine batters on the mound for the Chargers over 4.2
innings, striking out the first five batters he faced. Dylan Hicklin pitched in relief, striking out three.
Ike Phillips had two hits, while Whiddon, Cade Perdue, Jase Boguess and Easton Roberts each had
one hit.
Bath County’s girls JV softball team faced Richwood WV at home on Tuesday April 29 th , coming up
with a big win, defeating Richwood 21-8 and moving their record to 3-8. Cassidee Nicely pitched a
complete five inning game for Bath County striking out four, giving up only one hit and walking none
to pick up the win. Kennedi Pritt and Shiann Chaplin both went 4-for-4 for bath at the plate with both
hitting inside-the-park home runs. Bailey Wolfe added three hits, Alyssa Ingram, Nicely and Trinity
Forbes had two hits and Chloe Forbes had one hit.
TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES
UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA
The University of Virginia Cavaliers men’s baseball team defeated James Madison 12-6 at home on
April 23 rd before traveling to face #24 Georgia Tech in a three-game series on April 25-27 winning
games one and two 12-9 and 6-5 before losing game three 7-6 in extra innings. The Cavaliers then
hosted VCU on April 29 th winning 9-8 raising their record to 25-16.
The men’s golf team took part in the ACC Championships in Bowling Green, KY on April 24-28. The
first three days were devoted to stroke play and the Cavaliers placed first out of 15 teams. The last two
days were devoted to match play with Virginia defeating Georgia Tech 3-0 and Clemson 3-2
advancing to the finals against North Carolina, defeating them 3-2 to win their first ACC
Championship.

The men’s lacrosse team hosted #9 Duke on April 26 th losing 10-9 in overtime, ending their season at
6-8. Truitt Sunderland scored a hat trick for the Cavaliers.
The #24 ranked men’s and women’s track & field team took part in three events this past week, the
Drake Relays in Iowa on April 23-26, the Penn Relays in Pennsylvania on April 24-26 and hosted the
Virginia High Performance on April 27 th . In the Penn Relays the UVA men placed second in the 400-
meter hurdles and the women placed first in the distance medley relay and first and third in the high
jump. In the Drake Relays the UVA women placed second in the shot put and third in the discus and
hammer throw. In the Virginia High Performance, the UVA men placed first in the 800-meter run,
110-meter hurdles, 400-meter hurdles, long jump and hammer throw. They also placed second in the
1500-meter run, 110-meter hurdles, triple jump and hammer throw. They also placed third in the
400-meter hurdles and discus. The women placed first in the 400-meter dash, 1500-meter run, 400-
meter hurdles, high jump, triple jump, shot put, discus and hammer throw. Second place finishes
were in the 200-meter dash, 800-meter run, 1500-meter run, 400-meter hurdles, 4×100-meter relay,
4×400-meter relay, high jump and javelin. Third place finishes were in the 800-meter run, 1500-
meter run, 100-meter hurdles, 400-meter hurdles, triple jump and javelin.
The women’s lacrosse team lost to Boston College 17-7 in the quarterfinals of the ACC Championships
on April 23 rd dropping their record to 11-6. Jenna DiNardo scored two goals, and Addi Foster added a
goal and an assist to lead the Cavaliers.
The #25 ranked women’s softball team went on the road to face #15 Stanford for a three-game series
on April 25-27 losing games one and three 4-3 and 2-0, but winning game two 9-4 moving their
record to 35-16.
WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY
The #17 ranked West Virginia Mountaineers men’s baseball team went on the road to face UCF in a
three-game series on April 25-27 winning all three games 4-1, 15-10 and 4-3 raising their record to 37-
5.
The men’s golf team took part in the Big 12 Golf Championship held in Oklahoma on April 22-24
placing 13 th out of 16 teams.
The women’s track & field team participated in the Penn Relays in Pennsylvania on April 24-26. West
Virginia placed second in the women’s 5000-meter run.
JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY
The James Madison Dukes men’s baseball team lost to Virginia 12-6 on the road on April 23 rd before
hosting #21 ranked Coastal Carolina for a three-game series on April 25-27 losing all three games 9-2
in extra innings, 14-4 and 8-4. The guys then played Raford on the road on April 29 th losing 8-1
dropping their record to 13-32.
The women’s lacrosse team went on the road to face East Carolina on April 26 th winning 14-13 in
overtime to raise their record to 12-4. Olivia Matthews and Savannah Derey each scored a hat trick for
James Madison.
The women’s softball team traveled to face Coastal Carolina in a three-game series on April 25-27
winning the first two games 8-0 and 5-2 before losing game three 8-3 moving their record to 23-24.
The women’s tennis team took part in the Sun Belt Conference Championship in Georgia on April 25-
26 defeating South Alabama 4-1 in the quarterfinals then losing to Old Dominion 4-0 in the semifinals
ending their season at 10-13.
The women’s track & field team participated in the Penn Relays held in Pennsylvania on April 24-26.

VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY
The Virginia Tech Hokies men’s baseball team went on the road to face Duke in a three-game series
on April 25-27 losing games one and three 6-3 and 14-0 but won game two 9-8 in extra innings. The
guys then hosted Liberty on April 29 th losing 13-4 dropping their record to 27-18.
The men’s and women’s track & field teams took part in the Virginia High Performance in
Charlottesville, VA on April 27 th . The Hokie women swept the pole vault taking the top four spots as
did the guys. The Hokie men placed first in the 3000-meter steeplechase, third in the 800-meter run,
110-meter hurdles and the long jump.
The women’s lacrosse team lost to North Carolina 19-9 in the ACC Championship Tournament on
April 23 rd , ending their regular season at 9-9. Lauren Render and Grace New led the Hokies with hat
tricks.
The #14 ranked women’s softball team went on the road to face California in a three-game series on
April 25-27 winning the first two games 11-3 and 9-0 before dropping game three 4-0 moving their
record to 39-8.
VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE
The Virginia Military Keydets men’s baseball team lost four games this past week losing to Radford
12-5 on the road on April 23 rd before traveling to The Citadel for a three-game series on April 25-27
where they lost all three games 5-0, 4-2 and 11-8 dropping their record to 25-20.
The men’s lacrosse team hosted Long Island University on April 26 th winning 15-12 raising their
record to 10-4. Jack Duncan-Bloom and Matt Nichols both scored hat tricks for VMI.
The men’s and women’s track & field teams participated in the Catamount Classic in North Carolina
on April 25-26. The VMI men earned a second-place finish in the pole vault and 400-meter hurdles.
Other VMI competitors set personal bests in several events.

While he did not grow up here, he spent as much time as possible on the family farm, and eventually moved to Highland to continue the tradition, which he still pursues with his cousin. Unfortunately, farming doesn’t pay all the bills, so he has previously taken other jobs to support his farming hobby, including pressman/writer for The Recorder, and Ag Projects Coordinator for The Highland Center.
