POCAHONTAS COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Pocahontas County Warriors boys’ varsity football team met Tucker County in an away game on Friday Aug 30th losing 54-6 to open their season at 0-1.

The boys’ varsity soccer team hosted Bluefield on Saturday August 31st which ended in a 0-0 tie moving their record to 2-1-1 for the season. Earlier last week the guys defeated Midland Trail 3-0 on August 29th and Webster County 7-0 on Aug 26th. Against Midland Trail Luke Taylor, Wade Garber and Matthew McQuain scored goals for the Warriors with Kaden Wayne earning his second shutout of the season. Against Webster County Garber had an awesome game scoring four goals while Riley Keffer, Trenton Brock and McQuain added one goal apiece.

The girls’ varsity soccer team hosted Bluefield on Saturday August 31st playing to a 0-0 tie moving their record to 2-1-1. Last week the girls defeated Midland Trail 3-0 on August 29th and lost to Greenbrier East 3-2 on August 27th. Against Greenbrier East Erin Rider and Brianna Cochran scored goals for Pocahontas County with Shayla Bennett notching 16 saves against 19 attempts.

BATH COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Bath County Chargers girls’ varsity volleyball team hosted Riverhead on Thursday Aug 29th and lost in three straight sets 25-15, 25-21, and 25-22. Kenley Smith had eight kills to go with two aces for Bath County while Madison Carter and Bayley Gardzinski both had 15 digs apiece. Against Richwood, WV in an away game on Tuesday September 3rd the girls won 25-7, 25-15, and 25-10 moving their record to 1-1 for the season. Smith had eight kills, 17 assists, and seven aces to lead Bath County. Delaney Hicklin added nine kills and Gardzinski had six kills plus five aces. Both Sierra Gardener and Kiana Willamson had three digs. The girls JV volleyball team also won against Richwood winning in straight sets 25-5, 25-10. Bre Mabe had six aces and five kills to lead the Lady JV Chargers while Cassidee Nicely added nine aces and Trinity Forbes had three kills.

The boys’ varsity football team hosted Stonewall Jackson in a Friday evening tilt on August 30th winning 41-6 to open their season at 1-0. Wyatt Campbell took the opening kickoff for a touchdown and added two rushing touchdowns during the game. Luke Turner had two carries for 65 yards and two scores and Ethan Bryant added a touchdown run. The Charger defense was stout with Jeremy Burns recording two tackles for a loss and a forced fumble and both A.J. Woodsen and Tyler Shaver had fumble recoveries.

TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES

UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

The University of Virginia Cavaliers men’s football team hosted Richmond on August 31st earning a 34-13 victory to open their season. Anthony Colandrea threw for 297 yards and two touchdowns, going 17-of-23 to lead Virginia. He also added 49 yards rushing plus a score. Kobe Pace led the Cavalier rushing attack with 93 yards and a touchdown. Malachi Fields added 100 yards in receiving on five receptions.

The men’s soccer team hosted St. Joseph’s on August 29th winning 5-0. Reese Miller led the Virginia attack with two goals. On September 2nd UVA played Maryland in an away match that resulted in a 1-1 tie moving their record to 2-1-1. Nick Dang scored the lone goal for Virginia.

The men’s and women’s cross-country teams participated in the Spider Alumni Open with each earning first place finishes against 14 teams. The men took the top seven places in the 6K race with five scoring team points. The women took five out of the six top spots.

The #3 women’s field hockey team earned a 2-1 victory against #16 Penn State in an away match on August 30th to open their season. Sloan Davidson and Caroline Nemec scored goals for the Cavaliers.

The Lady Cavaliers volleyball team participated in the Quest for the Crown hosted by Old Dominion from August 30-31. The women won all three matches defeating Marist 3-0, William & Mary 3-0 and Old Dominion 3-0 moving their record to 3-0 for the season.

The women’s #7 soccer team met James Madison in an away match on September 1st notching a shutout 3-0 to remain undefeated at 5-0. Maggie Cagle, Ella Carter, and Kiki Maki scored goals for the Cavaliers.

WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY

The West Virginia Mountaineers football team had a tough go of it at home against #8 Penn State losing 34-12 last Saturday Aug 31st. Garrett Greene went 15-for-28 in passing for 161 yards for WVU with C.J. Donaldson adding 42 yards on 12 rushing attempts and a score.

The men’s soccer team moved to 3-0 with a 4-0 win against George Washington on August 30th. Simon Carlson and Sergio Ors Navarro scored two goals each for the Mountaineers.

The women’s soccer team improved their record to 3-2 with a win against Robert Morris on September 1st at home, winning 2-0. Dilary Heredia-Beltran and Taylor White scored goals for West Virginia. Earlier last week the Lady Mountaineers faced Penn State in an away game on August 29th losing 3-1. Ajanae Respass scored the lone goal for West Virginia against the Nittany Lions.

The Lady Mountaineers volleyball team participated in the Wake Forest Invitational from August 30-Spetember 1 winning two of the three matches. West Virginia defeated Navy 3-1 and Hofstra 3-1 while losing to host Wake Forest 3-2 moving their record to 2-1 for the season.

JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY

The James Madison Dukes men’s football team opened their season with a 30-7 victory against Charlotte in an away game on Saturday August 31st. Alonzo Barnett III led the team going 10-for-18 in passing for 219 yards and two touchdown tosses and added nine rushes for 89 yards.

The men’s soccer team hosted NC State on August 31st playing to a 2-2 tie moving their record to 0-0-3. Luca Nikolai and Jordon McMillen scored goals for JMU.

The women’s soccer team hosted #7 Virginia on September 1st, losing 3-0 dropping their record to 1-2-2 for the season.

The women’s field hockey team hosted Villanova on August 30th winning 2-1 to open their season. Carissa Tambroni and Skyler Brown scored goals for JMU.

The women’s cross-country team participated in the Richmond Spider Alumni Open 4K on Saturday August 31st, finishing fifth out of 14 teams in the meet.

The women’s volleyball team hosted the LD&B Insurance Invitational from August 30-September 1 winning two out of the three matches played. JMU beat Delaware State 3-0 and Presbyterian 3-0 while losing to Stony Brook 3-2 moving their record to 2-1 for the season.

VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY

The Virginia Tech Hokies men’s football team lost in their first game of the season to Vanderbilt at Vanderbilt 34-27. Kyron Drones led the Hokies going 22-for-33 in passing for 322 yards and two touchdowns. Bhayshul Tuten added 34 yards of rushing on nine attempts and one rushing touchdown.

The women’s soccer team hosted High Point on September 1st, winning 2-0. The scorers for Virginia Tech were Natalie Mitchell and Allie George. Earlier last week Tech hosted Loyola Maryland on August 29th winning 1-0 on a weather shortened ruling with the lone goal coming from George. The Lady Hokies now stand at 5-0-1 for the season.

The men’s soccer team moved to 2-0-1 after playing Kentucky on September 2nd in an away match which resulted in a 2-2 tie. Ethan Hackenberg and Ian Marcano scored goals for Virginia Tech.

The women’s volleyball team hosted Winthrop on September 1st, losing 3-0 to fall to 1-2 for the season. Earlier in the week the Lady Hokies played UCF at home on August 31st losing 3-2 and on August 30th beat Winthrop in an away match 3-2.

VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE

The Virginia Military Keydets men’s football team squared off against the Tribes of William & Mary in an away game on Saturday August 31st losing 41-7 to open their season. Hunter Rice rushed for 81 yards on 17 carries and scored one rushing touchdown for VMI.

The men’s and women’s cross-country teams participated in the Spider Alumni Open on August 31st, with the men placing fifth overall in the 6K course against 14 teams. The women placed 10th overall against 14 teams on the 4K course.

The men’s soccer team fell to UNC Asheville in an away match on September 1st 3-0 dropping their record to 2-1 for the season.

While he did not grow up here, he spent as much time as possible on the family farm, and eventually moved to Highland to continue the tradition, which he still pursues with his cousin. Unfortunately, farming doesn’t pay all the bills, so he has previously taken other jobs to support his farming hobby, including pressman/writer for The Recorder, and Ag Projects Coordinator for The Highland Center.
