POCAHONTAS COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Pocahontas County Warriors boys’ soccer team hosted James Monroe on Thursday Sept. 5th playing to a 3-3 tie. Trenton Brock, Wade Garber, and Matthew McQuain each scored goals for the Warriors. On Tuesday Sept. 10th the guys faced Greenbrier East at home, losing 3-0 dropping their record to 2-2-2.

The Warrior girls’ varsity soccer team also hosted James Monroe on Sept. 5th notching a 6-0 shutout to move their record to 3-1-1. Riley Pollack, Erin Rider, and Brianna Cochran scored two goals each for Pocahontas County as they earned their third shutout of the season.

The boys’ varsity football team fell to 0-2 for the season with a 26-18 loss against Meadow Bridge on Friday Sept 6th. Haydon Moore returned a kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown, and Gavin Delair threw a 64-yard touchdown pass to Devon Burgess for the Warriors.

HIGHLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Highland County girls’ varsity volleyball team started their season losing to Tygarts Valley on Thursday Sept. 5th 25-9, 25-23, 15-25, and 25-21. The girls middle school volleyball team defeated Tygarts Valley 25-12, 25-20 to open their season. Cynthia Warner (five aces, five points), Lalea Mullins (three aces, five points, one kill), Ruby Huffman (two aces), Wren Cox (one assist, six aces, six points), Lucy Honaker (five aces, five points), and Addison Sponaugle (three aces, four points) led Highland.

The girls’ volleyball team faced Pendleton County, WV on Tuesday Sept 10th losing 25-11, 25-8, 25-11 moving their record to 0-2. The Rams JV team opened their season with a 25-17, 25-14 loss. Amelia Good had four kills and four aces for the Rams, Brooke Williams added three kills and Makynley Smith served four aces.

BATH COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Bath County Chargers cross-country team participated in a race at Hidden Valley on Sept. 4th with the varsity runners running a 5K course. Ryleigh Phillips, Macey Paxton, and Lauren Bowling ran times of 31:18, 32:16, and 32:39 respectively. Junior varsity runner Allie Johnson ran a shortened race and posted a time of 21:01.

The girls’ varsity volleyball team defeated Miller School of Albemarle at home on Thursday Sept. 5th. The girls JV volleyball team won their match with a 25-10, 25-6 victory. Trinity Forbes and Addy Lockridge both had three kills for Bath County while Elin Essex served eight aces and Georgia Watkins had four aces.

On Tuesday Sept. 10th the girls’ varsity faced Riverheads, losing 22-25, 27-25, 25-16, 26-28, 15-12 to fall to 2-2 for the season. Delaney Hicklin led Bath County with 16 kills, Anna Essex had 12 and Bailey Gardzinski added nine. Kenley Smith had 20 assists to go with 21 digs, Gardzinski had 31 digs and Madison Carter had 20 digs. In the JV match the Chargers remained unbeaten at 4-0 winning 25-22, 21-25, 15-8. Forbes had nine kills for the Chargers, Watkins added three kills, Bre Mabe had five assists, two aces and Cassidee Nicely had 10 assists and two aces.

The boys’ varsity football team dominated Page County on Friday night Sept 6th winning 55-0 for their second victory of the season. Wyatt Campbell accounted for five touchdowns returning two punts for touchdowns (50 yards and 53 yards), ran for another score, and threw a pair of touchdown passes. Cooper Lowry caught a touchdown pass and returned a fumble for another score and Luke Turner caught a touchdown pass. Ethan Bryant scored two rushing touchdowns. Campbell rushed for 78 yards and threw for 139 yards on 5-for-8 passing. Bryant rushed for 59 yards; Lowry caught two passes for 92 yards and Turner caught a pass for 20 yards. Lowry and Isaac Phillips had nine tackles each and Zayne Hall recovered one fumble for the Charger defense.

The Chargers JV football team faced Page County at home on Thursday Sept. 5th losing 40-24 to open their season. Cade Perdue rushed for 36 yards and had 54 yards of receiving while Michael Hayes led the Charger defense with seven tackles.

TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES

UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

The University of Virginia Cavaliers men’s football team earned their second victory of the young season defeating Wake Forest in an away game 31-30 on Sept 7th. Anthony Colandrea went 33-for-43 in passing for 357 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Cavaliers.

The men’s soccer team hosted Duke on Sept 6th losing 1-0 dropping their record to 2-2-1.

The #3 women’s field hockey team went to Lynchburg to face the #11 Liberty on Sept. 8th winning 2-1 to remain undefeated at 3-0. Suze Leemans and Jans Croon scored goals for the Cavaliers.

The #4 Lady Cavaliers soccer team won a pair of games this past week, defeating VCU at VCU 1-0 on Sept. 5th and beating Howard 4-0 at home on Sept 8th to remain undefeated at 7-0. Maggie Cable scored the lone goal for the Cavaliers against VCU and Samar Guidry, Ella Carter, Kiki Maki, and Allie Ross scored goals for UVA against Howard.

WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY

The West Virginia Mountaineers men’s football team scored a victory against Albany on Sept 7th winning 49-14 to move their record to 1-1. Garrett Greene went 17-for-23 for 236 yards through the air with three touchdown passes to lead West Virginia.  C.J. Donaldson rushed for 125 yards and one touchdown and Jahiem White added 100 yards and a touchdown to aid WVU.

The men’s soccer team defeated California Baptist 3-2 on Sept. 6th in an away match. Simon Carlson, Sergio Ors Navarro, and Marcus Caldeira each scored a goal for the Mountaineers. On Sept. 10th the Mountaineers played Loyola Marymount to a tie 0-0 to conclude their California tour and move their record to 4-0-1.

The women’s soccer team played Liberty in a home match on Sept. 8th that resulted in a 1-1 tie moving their record to 4-2-1. Annika Leslie scored a goal for West Virginia.

JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY

The James Madison Dukes men’s football team won a tight one against Gardner-Webb at home on Saturday Sept 7th 13-6 moving their record to 2-0. Alonzo Barnett III went 14-of-22 through the air for 135 yards while George Pettaway and Tyler Purdy added 84 yards and 58 yards respectively. Purdy also added a touchdown run.

The women’s soccer team lost to West Virginia 2-0 on Sept 5th in an away match to drop their record to 1-3-2.

The men’s soccer team won their first game of the season, defeating #14 Georgetown on Sept. 9th at home 1-0, moving their record to 1-0-3. Scoring the winning goal for JMU was Aidan Melville.

The women’s field hockey team split a pair of games this past week, winning in double-overtime against American 3-2 at home on Sept. 6th and losing to Monmouth 4-3, also at home, on Sept 8th moving their record to 2-1. Against American Madelief Molier, Mia Julian, and Alice Roeper scored goals for JMU. Scoring goals for James Madison against Monmouth were Cassidy Strittmatter, Molier, and Roeper.

The women’s volleyball team participated in the Kentucky Invitational on Sept. 6-7 losing to Ball State 25-27, 27-25, 20-25, 17-25 and losing to Kentucky 10-25, 20-25, 22-25 to move their record to 2-3 for the season.

VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY

The Virginia Tech Hokies men’s football team earned their first victory of the season with a 31-14 win against Marshall at home on Sept. 7th, moving their record to 1-1. Kyron Jones led the Hokies going 14-of-21 for 130 yards and a touchdown pass. Bhayshul Tuten contributed 120 yards rushing on 22 carries plus a touchdown.

The men’s soccer team picked up a pair of wins this past week defeating Presbyterian 2-1 on Sept. 5th at home and Furman in an away match on Sept. 8th winning 3-0 moving their record to 4-0-1. Against Presbyterian Trey Gardiner and Olafur Floki Stephenson notched goals for Virginia Tech. Stephensen, Carter Hensley, and Ethan Hackenberg scored goals for the Hokies.

The women’s soccer team lost a pair of games this past week, losing to Liberty at home on Sept. 5th 2-1 and losing to Northwestern 1-0 on Sept. 8th in an away match, moving their overall record to 5-2-1. Against Liberty Sophie Maltese scored the lone goal for the Hokies.

The women’s volleyball team participated in the VCU Invitational on Sept 6th and 7th splitting pair of games. The Lady Hokies defeated Virginia Commonwealth 3-1 and lost to Lafayette 3-1 moving their record to 2-3 for the season.

The men’s and women’s cross-country team hosted the Virginia Tech Invitational on Sept. 6th with both squads finishing in first place. In the women’s 4K race Virginia Tech took the first five places. In the men’s 6K race Tech placed five runners in the top eight to include taking the top spot.

VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE

The Virginia Military Keydets men’s football team lost a close one at home to Bucknell on Sept. 7th 35-28 dropping their record to 0-2. Collin Shannon went 21-for-32 in the air for 129 yards and Hunter Rice had a big day rushing for 166 yards on 18 carries, scoring two touchdowns for VMI.

The men’s soccer team lost a couple of games this past week, losing to Canisus University 2-0 on Sept. 6th in an away match and losing to Niagara University 5-0 also in an away match. The Keydets dropped to 2-3 for the season.

The women’s soccer team lost to Navy at Navy 3-2 on Sept. 8th moving their record to 3-2-1. Riley Boucher and Isabella Bruzonic scored goals for VMI.

Scott Smith is the General Manager for Allegheny Mountain Radio and Station Coordinator and News Reporter for WVLS. Scott’s family has deep roots in Highland County. While he did not grow up here, he spent as much time as possible on the family farm, and eventually moved to Highland to continue the tradition, which he still pursues with his cousin. Unfortunately, farming doesn’t pay all the bills, so he has previously taken other jobs to support his farming hobby, including pressman/writer for The Recorder, and Ag Projects Coordinator for The Highland Center.
