POCAHONTAS COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Warriors varsity girls’ basketball team lost to Pendleton County on Monday night Jan 22nd in an away game 43-34 dropping their record to 3-6 overall. Allyson Taylor and Calli Propst scored seven points each to lead Pocahontas County. M. Taylor and Shayla Bennett added six points apiece for the Warriors.

BATH COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Bath County Chargers wrestling team participated in a dual meet Monday night Jan 22nd hosting James River and Buffalo Gap. The Chargers split the two matches, beating James River 42-30, and losing to Buffalo Gap 38-30. A.J Woodson, Paxton Rivenbark, and Asa Altizer went 2-0 for Bath County while Samantha Home, Mackenzie Riley, Abby Stone, Jeremy Burns, Noah Bolling, and Miguel Malpica each notched a victory.

HIGHLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Highland Rams boys’ varsity basketball team came away winners Monday night Jan 22nd defeating Boys Home in a home contest 64-46. John Wagner led the Rams with 25 points and Eli Moore added a 10-point, 11-rebound double-double. Patton Hull scored 11 points, Elijah Good added nine points and 11 rebounds, and Zach Armstrong added eight points, five rebounds, four assists and six steals for the Rams. On Tuesday night Jan 23rd the boys’ varsity basketball team defeated Bath County in an away game 52-36 sweeping the Chargers in both games this year. The Rams now stand at 3-2 in the Pioneer District, 5-6 overall while the Chargers are 1-4 in the Pioneer District, 7-8 overall. Eli Moore scored 18 points, John Wagner had 12 points and 15 rebounds, and Zach Armstrong had 15 points to lead the Rams. Among Armstrong’s 15 points was a 65-foot three pointer at the second quarter buzzer. For the Chargers Wyatt Campbell scored 12 points and Issac Ingram added nine points and six rebounds. Also, for the Chargers Frankie DeBoe had eight rebounds and Luke Turner hauled in five.

The girls’ game between Highland and Bath was slotted as a junior varsity match-up with the Highland Rams coming out ahead 48-27. Colleen Adams scored 17 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the Rams. Addison Lockridge and Zalea Good both had 11 points while Hannah Meyerhoeffer added 12 rebounds with Lockridge and Good grabbing five apiece. Trinity Forbes led Bath County with 11 points and seven rebounds, Ryleigh Phillips had seven points and Zoey Jenkins added six points and seven rebounds.

TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES

VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE

The Virginia Military Keydets men’s basketball team played a pair of games last week, losing to Furman at home on Jan 17th 100-60 and beating The Citadel at home on Jan 20th 70-63 improving their record to 4-15. Against Furman Tyran Cook and Stephen Olowoniyi scored 14 points each to lead VMI. Taeshaud Jackson II added 13 rebounds. Against The Citadel five VMI players scored in double figures led by Brennan Watkins with 14 points and Tyran Cook with 12.

Both the men’s and women’s rifle team participated in a match against Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC on Jan 20th placing first.

The men’s wrestling team faced Chattanooga in a conference match-up losing 31-13. Dyson Dunham, Braxton Lewis, Toby Schoffstall, and Tyler Mousaw picked up wins for the Keydets.

JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY

The James Madison Dukes men’s basketball team won a pair of home games this past week, beating ULM on Jan 18th 89-70 and beating Marshall on Jan 20th 67-52 improving their record to 17-2. Against ULM Julien Wooden led JMU with 31 points and Terrence Edwards, Jr added 17. Against Marshall Edwards. Jr led James Madison with 20 points and T.J. Bickerstaff added 11 rebounds.

The men’s tennis team picked up a win against Furman in Greenville, SC on Jan 20th 5-2. On Jan 21st, also in Greenville, SC the Dukes lost to Queens 4-3 dropping their record to 1-2.

The women’s tennis team played a trio of matches this past week, losing to #12 Virginia in Charlottesville, VA 7-0 on Jan 18th, losing to #25 Wisconsin 6-1 in Dekalb, IL on Jan 20th, and defeating Northern Illinois 5-2 on Jan 22nd. The Lady Dukes now stand at 1-2 for the spring season.

The women’s basketball team picked up a pair of wins last week at home, beating Georgia Southern 72-51 on Jan 18th and winning against Old Dominion on Jan 20th 72-64 improving their record to 14-5. Against Georgia Southern Payton McDaniel led JMU with 24 points with Kseniia Kozlova and Olivia Mullins adding 14 each. Against Old Dominion Hevynne Bristow scored 20 points and Ashanti Barnes added 10 rebounds for James Madison.

UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

The Virginia Cavaliers men’s basketball team won a pair of games this past week, beating archrival Virginia Tech at home 65-57 on Jan 17th and defeating Georgia Tech in Atlanta, GA on Jan 20th 75-66 improving their record to 13-5. Against Virginia Tech Jordan Minor and Reece Beekman scored 16 points each for UVA. Against Georgia Tech Isaac McKneely led Virginia with 20 points and Beekman added 19 points and 11 assists.

The #1 Virginia men’s tennis team traveled to Austin, TX on Jan 18th defeating #3 Texas 4-3. On Jan 21st the Cavaliers faced #5 South Carolina at home losing 4-3 dropping their record to 3-1 for the spring season.

The women’s basketball team played a home game against #19 Notre Dame on Jan 18th losing 86-76. Kymora Johnson and Paris Clark scored 16 points each to lead Virginia. On Jan 21st the Lady Cavaliers traveled to Tallahassee, FL upsetting #15 Florida State 91-87 improving their record to 9-9. Five Virginia players scored in double figures led by Johnson who scored 35 points. Camryn Taylor added 11 points and 10 rebounds.

The #12 women’s tennis team won four matches this past week at home, defeating Richmond on Jan 18th 4-0, James Madison on Jan 18th 7-0, Marshall on Jan 20th 7-0, and Longwood on Jan 20th 7-0.

WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY

The West Virginia Mountaineers men’s basketball team played a pair of games this past week, losing to #15 Oklahoma in Norman, OK on Jan 17th 77-63 and upsetting #3 Kansas at home on Jan 20th 91-85. Against Oklahoma Noah Farrakhan led West Virginia with 14 points. Against Kansas Raequan Battle scored 23 points and Patrick Suemnick added 20 to lead the Mountaineers. West Virginia faced UCF on Jan 23rd in Orlando, FL losing 72-59 dropping their record to 7-12. Josiah Harris led the Mountaineers with 15 points.

The women’s basketball team won a pair of games this past week, defeating Houston 76-59 on Jan 17th at home and beating Cincinnati in Cincinnati, OH on Jan 20th 72-43 improving their record to 16-2. Against Houston four players scored in double figures for WVU led by J.J. Quinerly with 18 points. Lauren Fields and Kyah Watson added 10 rebounds each. Against Cincinnati four players scored in double figures led by Quinerly with 23 points.

The women’s tennis team won a pair of matches at home on Jan 20th beating Duquesne 7-0 and Morgan State 7-0.

The men’s and women’s rifle team defeated #16 Army in a match at home to remain undefeated at 10-0 holding on to their #1 ranking.

VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY

The Virginia Tech Hookies men’s basketball team split a pair of games this past week, losing to Virginia in Charlottesville, VA on Jan 17th 65-57 and beating NC state in Raleigh, NC on Jan 20th 84-78. Against UVA Sean Pedulla led the Hokies with 18 points. Against NC State five players for Tech scored in double figures led by Hunter Cattoor scoring 19 points. On Jan 23rd Virginia Tech faced Boston College at home winning 76-71 improving their record to 12-7. Cattoor led the Hokies with 17 points. Pedulla added 16 points, M.J. Collins 11.

The #14 women’s basketball team traveled to Durham, NC to face Duke on Jan 18th losing 63-46. Elizabeth Kitley scored 18 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Hokies. On Jan 21st the Lady Hokies faced Clemson in a home contest winning 74-62 improving their record to 14-4. Kitley led Virginia Tech with 31 points and eight rebounds.

The women’s tennis team opened their spring season at home on Jan 20th beating Radford 6-1 and then defeated ETSU on Jan 21st 5-2.

LIBERTY UNIVERSITY

The Liberty Flames men’s basketball team won a pair of home games this past week, defeating FIU 78-69 on Jan 18th and beating Sam Houston 82-66 on Jan 20th. Kyle Rode scored 19 points and Kaden Metheny added 18 to lead the Flames. Against Sam Houston four players scored in double figures for Liberty led by Rode with 19 points.

The women’s basketball team split a pair of games this past week, losing to FIU 70-59 in Miami, FL on Jan 18th and beating Sam Houston in Huntsville, TX on Jan 20th 84-77 moving their record to 7-13. Against FIU Asia Boone scored 18 points and Emma Hess added 15 for the Lady Flames. Against Sam Houston Hess led the Liberty with 30 points with Bella Smuda adding 10 points and 11 rebounds, and Emily Howard chipping in with 14 points.

The women’s tennis team beat Queens at home on Jan 19th 5-2 and lost to Texas Tech I Lubbock, TX 6-1 making their record 1-1 for the spring season.

The men’s tennis team won two matches at home on Jan 21st, defeating Radford 7-0 and George Mason 6-1 improving their record to 2-1 for the spring season.

While he did not grow up here, he spent as much time as possible on the family farm, and eventually moved to Highland to continue the tradition, which he still pursues with his cousin. Unfortunately, farming doesn’t pay all the bills, so he has previously taken other jobs to support his farming hobby, including pressman/writer for The Recorder, and Ag Projects Coordinator for The Highland Center.
