POCAHONTAS COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Pocahontas County Warriors boys’ varsity football team earned their first win of the season on Friday night September 26th defeating Richwood WV at home 48-0.
The Warriors girls’ varsity soccer team went on the road to face Woodrow Wilson on Thursday September 25th losing 5-2 then on Tuesday September 30th the girls varsity hosted Pike View winning 4-0 moving their record to 8-3-1.
The Warriors boys middle school football team faced Pendleton County on Wednesday September 24th losing 36-6 dropping their record to 0-4 for the season.
The Warriors girls’ varsity volleyball team lost a pair of road games this past week losing to Pendleton County 3-0 on Thursday September 25th and losing to Elkins 2-0 on Saturday September 27th moving their record to 0-7.
The Warriors boys’ varsity soccer team lost to Pike View 2-0 on Tuesday September 30th dropping their record to 4-7 for the season.
BATH COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Bath County Chargers boys’ varsity golf team met Ridgeview Christian on the Omni Homestead’s Old Course on Tuesday September 30th picking up a win with a 203-203 score. The Chargers got the win because of a tiebreaker from Chargers’ Draven Stidham-Moore’s fifth place score. Michael Keyes of Bath County shot a 49, Akio Long had a 50 with both Ryan Ratcliffe and Atticus Stauffer scoring a 52 in addition to Stidham-Moore’s 53.
The Chargers boys JV football team lost to Pendleton County 45-0 on the road on Tuesday September 30th, dropping their record to 0-3 for the season.
The Chargers girls’ varsity volleyball team participated in the James River Volleyball Tournament on Saturday September 27th. Bath County placed second, defeating Smith Mountain Lake Christian Academy, James River, Parry McCluer and Heritage before losing to Franklin County in the championship match. The girls’ varsity now stands at 15-5 for the season.
The Chargers girls’ varsity cross-country team had three runners participate in the Grace Christian Invitational in Staunton on Saturday September 27th. Adrianna Miller, Alli Johnson and Lauren Bolling all ran for Bath County.
The Chargers boys’ varsity football team handled their business on Friday night September 26th defeating Hancock MD 42-0 at home, moving their record to 3-1. Ethan Bryant scored five touchdowns to lead Bath County rushing for 146 yards and four scores on 12 carries and added nine tackles and a 44-yard interception return for a touchdown on defense. Hunter Kirby ran for a score and threw a touchdown to Owen Perdue that covered 42 yards. Bryant was 3-for-3 in the air for 16 yards and Kirby was 4-for-7 for 8 yards and the touchdown. Ike Phillips had 12 tackles, including three for a loss, to go with a forced fumble, and A.J. Woodson had an interception. Jeremy Burns had eight tackles, two for a loss, and Perdue had three tackles for a loss.
The Chargers girls’ varsity cross-country team ran the Blue Ridge Invitational 5K in Troutville on September 24th. Johnson placed 53rd, with Miller, Zy Coleman, Sophie Ailstock, and Bolling also finishing the course for the Chargers.
The Chargers girls’ varsity and JV volleyball teams hosted Craig County on Thursday September 25th with the Chargers varsity winning in straight sets 25-19, 25-13. 25-20 improving their record to 2-2 in the Pioneer District. Kenley Smith had 21 digs and 20 assists to lead Bath County, and Embrie Hazelwood had 19 digs. Trinity Forbes had 13 kills, Smith with 11 and Addie Lockridge had nine. The Charger JVs defeated Craig County 25-17, 25-21 moving their record to 2-2 in the Pioneer, 7-3 overall. Bre Mabe had 12 kills and four aces to lead Bath County, Bailey Wolfe had 11 digs and Shiann Chaplin had nine assists.
HIGHLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Highland County Rams girls’ varsity and middle school volleyball teams traveled to face Tygarts Valley WV on Monday September 29th. Both teams won with the Rams varsity, winning 25-19, 25-16, 27-25 to move their record to 6-3. Colleen Adams had six kills, six assists and three digs for the Lady Rams and Jade Hotz served nine aces to go along with three kills. Emma Brower scored eight kills, Sarah Liller had six aces, and Ali Veasey added three digs. The Rams middle school volleyball defeated Tygart Valley 25-23, 25-21, moving their record to 5-4. Caston Lightner had four kills, four digs and three aces for the Rams and Addison Sponaugle added four aces along with three digs. Ashlynn Smith had eight assists, Aspen Lupo had seven digs, and Wren Cox had three kills.
TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES
UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA
The University of Virginia Cavaliers men’s football team scored a major upset defeating #8 Florida State 46-38 on September 27th in double-overtime at home improving their record to 4-1. Chandler Morris was 26-for-35 in the air for 229 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 37 yards on eight carries and three scores to lead the Cavaliers.
The #6 ranked men’s and #18 ranked women’s cross-country teams participated in the Cans Creek Classic in Missouri on September 26th. The UVA men finished second against a field of 32 teams while the UVA women finished fourth in a field of 31 teams.
The #12 ranked men’s soccer team hosted North Carolina on September 27th playing to a scoreless tie 0-0 moving their record to 5-1-2.
The women’s #3 field hockey team traveled to California to face two teams this past week defeating California 3-2 on September 26th and Stanford 2-0 on September 28th to remain undefeated at 8-0. Against Cal Mia Abello scored two goals and Caroline Nemec added one for Virginia. Against Stanford Suze Leemans and Riley Savage each scored for Virginia.
The women’s #1 ranked soccer team defeated Clemson 3-0 on the road on September 25th, moving their record to 9-0-1. Lia Godfrey, Meredith McDermott and Allie Ross each scored for UVA.
The women’s volleyball team went on the road for a pair of games losing to #3 Stanford 3-1 on September 27th and losing to Cal 3-1 on September 28th dropping their record to 7-5.
The men’s golf team participated in the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational in Texas on September 29-30 and earned a four-way share of the team championship with 15 teams competing.
WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY
The West Virginia Mountaineers men’s football team were upended by Utah on September 27th, losing 48-14 at home, dropping their record to 2-3. Khalil Wilkins and Diore Hubbard scored touchdowns for West Virginia.
The men’s #10 ranked soccer team went on the road to face UCF on September 28th winning 10 improving their record to 6-1-2. Sammie Walker scored for West Virginia.
The women’s soccer team played a pair of road games this past week in Utah defeating #16 BYU 3-2 on September 24th and playing to a 1-1 tie to Utah on September 27th moving their record to 6-2-2. Against BYU Maya Leoni, Layla Thompson and Taylor White each scored for West Virgina. Against Utah Anna Hauer scored for the Mountaineers.
The women’s volleyball team went on the road to face Cincinnati, losing 3-1 on September 27th dropping their record to 12-1.
The men’s golf team participated in the Nemacolin Collegiate Invitational in Minnesota on September 29-30 placing first out of nine teams. The WVU men placed three in the top five individually.
JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY
The James Madison Dukes men’s football team defeated Georgia Southern 35-10 at home on September 27th, improving their record to 3-1. Alonza Barnett III was 11-for-22 in the air for 148 yards and a touchdown to lead James Madison. Wayne Knight, Jordan Fuller and Barnett III each added a rushing touchdown.
The men’s soccer team are having a rough season as they hosted South Carolina losing 1-0 on September 28th falling to 1-6-1 for the season.
The women’s cross-country team hosted the JMU Invitational on September 26th, placing first out of seven teams. The JMU women captured four of the top seven spots including first place individually.
The women’s field hockey team played a pair of games this past week, defeating Longwood 5-0 in a home match on September 26th and losing to Appalachian State 5-4 in overtime on September 28th on the road, moving their record to 7-4. Against Longwood Julie Narleski, Alice Roeper, Skyler Brown, Madelief Molier and Maddie Tierney each scored for JMU. Against App State Roeper scored a hat trick and Narleski added a goal for JMU.
The women’s soccer team traveled to Alabama on September 27th and played to a scoreless tie 0-0, moving their record to 5-3-4.
The women’s volleyball team went on the road to play a double-header against Appalachian State on September 26-27. The Lady Dukes lost game one 3-1 and won game two 3-1, moving their record to 8-6.
The men’s golf team participated in the Nemacolin Invitational in Pennsylvania on September 29-30 finishing in a tie for third place out of 19 teams.
VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY
The Virginia Tech Hokies men’s football team defeated NC St 23-21 on the road on September 27th, boosting their record to 2-3. VT’s Jordan Love kick a 49-yard field goal with 6:35 left on the clock in the 4th quarter. Kyron Drones was 20-for-34 in the air for 177 yards and two touchdowns to lead Virginia Tech. Cameron Seldon and Marcellous Hawkins each added rushing touchdowns.
The men’s soccer team defeated ETSU 1-0 in a road match on September 29th, moving their record to 3-2-3. Dagur Traustason scored for Virginia Tech.
The women’s soccer team hosted NC State, playing to a 4-4 tie on September 27th, moving their record to 4-5-3. Taylor Lewin, Mana Mitchell, Hannah Pachan and Anna Weir each scored for the Lady Hokies.
The women’s volleyball team hosted a pair of teams from California losing to California 3-0 on September 27th and losing to # ranked Stanford 3-0 on September 28th dropping their record to 8-5.
VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE
The Virginia Military Keydets men’s and women’s cross-country teams participated in the James Madison Invitational on September 26th. The VMI men placed first out of five teams taking the top three spots individually. The VMI women placed third out of seven teams and took the third and fourth spots individually.
The men’s soccer team defeated Radford 1-0 at home on September 24th. Jesse Lee scored for VMI. On September 30th VMI traveled to Minnesota to face St. Thomas where they lost 3-1 dropping their record to 2-6-3. Against St. Thomas Colin Blandford scored for VMI.
The women’s soccer team lost to Citadel 2-0 on September 28th in a road match dropping their record to 1-10-1.
