POCAHONTAS COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Warriors boys’ varsity soccer team faced Midland Trail in an away match defeating Midland 10-0 on Oct. 1st improving their record to 5-4-1. Trenton Brock and Wade Garber each scored two goals while Dylan Keller, Dauvaugh Morris, Riley Keffer, Griffin Taylor, Florian Baudler, and Ben Workman added one goal each for Pocahontas.

The Warriors varsity boy’s football team earned their first win of the season Friday night Sept. 27th defeating Richwood, WV 47-6 moving their record to 1-4. The Warrior offense rang up 310 total yards and scored seven touchdowns. Warrior Logan Keatley scored four touchdowns which included a TD pass from Gavin Delair to lead the attack. Austin Price, Devon Burgess and Griffin Taylor added touchdowns of their own, Taylor’s being a pick six.

The Warriors middle school football team played Pendleton County on Wednesday Sept. 25th losing 42-6. The Warriors scored their lone touchdown on a long run by Noah Foe.

HIGHLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Highland County Rams girls’ varsity and JV volleyball teams hosted Bath County Thursday Sept. 26th. The Rams girls’ varsity lost to Bath 4-25, 9-25, 13-25 dropping their record to 0-1 in the Pioneer District, 0-5 overall. The Chargers improved to 3-1 in the Pioneer District, 6-3 overall. Colleen Adams had four assists and a kill for Highland, Ali Veasey and Kylie Arbogast added one kill apiece and Ava Summers served two aces. For the Chargers, Delaney Hicklin had 11 kills, Bayley Gardzinski served 10 aces, Kenley Smith added 11 assists, and Anna Essex served three aces and had four kills. The Rams JV team lost to the Chargers 6-25, 12-25 dropping their record to 0-1 in the Pioneer District, 1-2 overall. The Chargers JV team improved their record to 2-2 in the Pioneer, 7-2 overall. The Chargers JV were led by Bailey Wolfe and Georgia Watkins who both served five aces while Elin Essex had five assists and Bre Mabe added four kills.

BATH COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Bath County Chargers girls’ varsity volleyball team defeated Buffalo Gap 25-18, 25-22, 25-18 at Buffalo Gap on Wednesday Sept. 25th. Madison Carter led the Chargers with 24 digs, Gardzinski chipped in with 16 digs, seven kills, and three aces. Smith added 12 digs, 27 assists and four aces, Essex had 11 digs, eight kills and four aces while Hicklin had 14 kills. The Chargers girls JV team also played and beat Buffalo Gap 14-25, 25-8, 15-7. Trinity Forbes had seven digs and four kills to lead Bath County, Watkins added six digs and four kills, Essex had eight assists, Mabe chipped in with five digs and Addy Lockridge served four aces.

The boys JV football team hosted Narrows on Wednesday Sept. 25th losing 22-16 dropping their record to 0-3. The Chargers touchdowns came from Gunnar Whiddon on a 39-yard run and on a 12-yard touchdown pass from Cade Perdue to Jeffrey Hamilton. Bath County completed two two-point conversions on a Dylan Hicklin run and a pass from Perdue to Walker Randozzo. Whiddon rushed for 108 yards on 10 carries and Randozzo rushed for 86 yards on nine carries. Perdue went 4-of-10 passing for 64 yards. Michael Keyes led the Chargers defense with 10 tackles, including one for a loss, and Jesse Perry had three tackles for a loss.

TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES

UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

The Virginia Cavaliers men’s and women’s cross-country teams participated in the Nuttycombe Invitational in Wisconsin on Sept. 27th. The men finished in 11th place out of 24 teams while the women finished in 11th place out of 25 teams. Both squads were split into “A” and “B” teams. For the guy’s Will Anthony came in 15th place and Gary Martin finished in 18th place for the Cavaliers “A” team over the 8K course. For the men’s “B” team Scott Sikorski came in 20th place. For the women’s “A” team Jenny Schilling finished in 20th place and Gillian Bushee finished in 26th place over the 6K course. The women’s “B” team saw Stella Kermes place 6th.

The #3 women’s field hockey team traveled to North Carolina to face #9 Duke on Sept. 27th, coming away with a 1-0 victory. Mia Abello scored the winning goal for the Cavaliers. On Sept. 29th Virginia hosted William & Mary winning 4-1 to remain undefeated at 9-0. Abello, Taryn Tkachuk, Amelie Rees, and Lilly Hengerer scored goals for UVA.

The men’s and women’s tennis teams participated in the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Oklahoma on Sept. 25-29. The UVA men were 1-1 in singles and 1-2 in doubles play. The UVA women finished with a 8-8 record in singles and a 1-3 record in doubles.

The women’s volleyball team traveled to North Carolina on Sept 27-29 to play Wake Forest and NC State. The Lady Cavaliers defeated Wake Forest 3-2 and lost to NC State 3-1 to move their record to 11-2.

The men’s soccer team lost a pair of games this past week losing to #2 Stanford 1-0 on Sept 27th at home and losing to UNCG 2-1 at home on Oct. 1st dropping their record to 2-4-3. Luke Burns scored the lone goal for UVA against UNCG.

The women’s golf team participated in the Windy City Collegiate Classic in Illinois on Sept. 30-Oct. 1.

The #19 women’s soccer team faced #4 North Carolina in an away match on Sept. 27th losing 3-2 dropping their record to 8-3. Maggie Cagle and Yuna McCormack scored goals for Virginia.

WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY

The #7 West Virginia Mountaineers’ men’s soccer team hosted Kentucky on Sept. 27th playing to a 0-0 draw. The guys then traveled to Pennsylvania to face Bucknell on Oct. 1st winning 1-0 moving their record to 6-0-3. Sergio Ors Navarro scored the winning goal for West Virginia.

The women’s soccer team traveled out to Arizona over the weekend defeating Arizona State on Sept. 26th 21 and playing Arizona to a 1-1 tie on Sept. 29th moving their record to 8-2-2. Gianna Koss and Ajanae Respass scored goals for West Virginia against ASU and Lilly McCarthy scored the lone goal against Arizona.

The women’s volleyball team lost a pair of games this past week losing to Cincinnati at home on Sept. 25th 3-0 and losing to Iowa State at Iowa State on Sept. 28th 3-2 dropping their record to 6-7.

The men’s golf team participated in the Nemacolin Collegiate Invitational in Pennsylvania on Sept. 30-Oct. 1 and took first place as a team out of 14 teams. Kaleb Wilson paced the Mountaineers with a first place individually.

The women’s tennis team hosted the Thunder In The Mountains Tournament from Sept. 27-29. The Lady Mountaineers played in 10 singles matches going 7-3.

JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY

The James Madison Dukes men’s football team rolled over Ball State on Sept. 28th winning 63-7 to remain undefeated at 4-0. Alonzo Barnett II was 20-for-28 in passing for 280 yards and five touchdowns plus scoring a rushing touchdown. Jobi Malary and George Pettaway added one rushing touchdown each. Yamir Knight received two touchdown passes, Taylor Thompson, Omarion Dollison, and Cam Ross added one each.

The men’s golf team participated in the Virtues Intercollegiate Tournament in Ohio on Sept. 28-29, placing second out of 14 teams. JMU golfers Garrett Kuhla and Vaclav Tichy both finished in the top five individually with Kuhla finishing second and Tichy finished in a tie for fourth.

The women’s hockey team won a pair of games this past week, defeating Central Michigan at home on Sept. 27th 3-2 and defeating Queens (NC) in an away game on Sept. 29th 7-0, improving their record to 6-2. Against CMU Samantha Grimes, Lilly Turner, and Alice Roeper scored goals for JMU. Against Queens Roeper scored a hat trick with Elena Giangaspero, Cassid Strittmatter, Carissa Tambroni, and Brynna Hill adding one goal apiece for JMU.

The women’s soccer team won a pair of games this past week defeating Coastal Carolina in an away game on Sept. 26th 3-1 and defeating Old Dominion at home on Sept. 29th 3-2 improving their record to 5-3-2. Against Coastal Carolina Amanda Attanasi, Ginny Lackey, and Sophia Verrecchia scored goals for JMU. Against ODU Lackey and Jamie Swartz scored goals for James Madison with another goal being a team goal.

The women’s tennis team participated in the 49er Invitational in North Carolian on Sept. 27-29. The Lady Dukes turned in a 19-10 record overall, which included a 13-6 mark in singles and a 6-4 doubles tally.

The women’s volleyball team hosted Appalachian State for a double-header on Sept. 26-27 losing both matches 3-0 and 3-2 moving their record to 5-7.

VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY

The Virginia Tech Hokies men’s football team could have easily defeated #8 Miami but came up short losing 38-34 in an away game on Sept. 27th. Kyron Drones led Virginia Tech going 19-for-33 through the air for 189 yards passing and two touchdowns and Bhayshul Tuten added 141 yards on the ground with 19 carries and a rushing TD.

The men’s soccer team hosted #1 Pitt on Sept. 28th losing 2-0. On Oct. 1st the guy’s hosted Queens (NC) coming away with a 4-0 victory moving their record to 6-2-1. Oliver Roche, Declan Quill, Ian Marcano, and Alex Perez scored goals for Virginia Tech.

The men’s and women’s tennis teams participated in the ITA All-American Championships in Oklahoma on Sept. 21-29. The Hokies men went 2-1 in the singles and 1-1 in doubles play. The women went 2-3 in singles play and finished 2-1 in doubles play.

The women’s soccer team moved their record to 8-3-1 with a 5-1 victory over Louisville at home on Sept. 26th. Taylor Price scored a hat trick to lead the Hokie women with Anna Weir and Natalie Mitchell contributing one goal each.

The women’s volleyball team lost a pair of games this past week losing to NC State in NC Sept. 27th 3-0 and losing to Wake Forest in another away game 3-1 dropping their record to 6-6.

The men’s and women’s tennis teams participated in the ITA All-American Championships in Oklahoma from Sept. 21-29. The guys went 2-2 in singles play and 1-1 in doubles play. The women finished 2-3 in singles matches and 2-1 in doubles play.

VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE

The Virginia Military Keydets women’s soccer team defeated The Citadel 2-1 in an away match on Sept. 26th moving their record to 5-5-1. Delilah Martindale and Barrett Callejo scored goals for VMI.

Scott Smith is the General Manager for Allegheny Mountain Radio and Station Coordinator and News Reporter for WVLS. Scott’s family has deep roots in Highland County. While he did not grow up here, he spent as much time as possible on the family farm, and eventually moved to Highland to continue the tradition, which he still pursues with his cousin. Unfortunately, farming doesn’t pay all the bills, so he has previously taken other jobs to support his farming hobby, including pressman/writer for The Recorder, and Ag Projects Coordinator for The Highland Center.
