POCAHONTAS COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Pocahontas County Warriors boys’ varsity soccer team picked up two wins and a loss this past
week. They defeated Berkeley Springs 6-1 at home on Saturday, October 4th, and earned a second
victory when Petersburg forfeited on Monday October 6th, resulting in a 0-0 score. The Warriors lost
to Braxton County 6-0 on the road on Tuesday October 7 th . This brings their season record to 6-8. In
the game against Berkley Springs, Wade Garber scored three goals, while Riley Keffer, Tristan
O’Steen, and Ben Workman each added one goal for the Warriors.
The Warriors girls’ varsity soccer team played three games this past week, losing to Berkeley Springs
3-2 at home on Saturday October 4 th , defeating Petersburg 3-0 at home on Monday October 6 th and
losing to Braxton County 3-2 on the road on Tuesday October 7 th moving their record to 9-5-1 for the
season.
The Warriors boys middle school football team picked up their first win of the season defeating
Richwood 36-14 at home on Wednesday October 1 st , moving their record to 1-4 for the season.
BATH COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Bath County Chargers girls’ varsity, JV and middle school teams hosted the Highland County
Rams Tuesday night October 7 th . The Chargers varsity won 25-6, 25-8, 25-12 moving their record to 3-
2 in the Pioneer District, 16-5 overall. The Rams fell to 0-6 in the Pioneer, 7-7 overall. Kenley Smith
led the Chargers with 14 assists, eight digs and five aces, Addie Lockridge added four aces and eight
kills. Reghan Pritt had five digs and both Trinity Forbes and Georgia Watkins had four kills. The
Rams were led by Brooklyn Bussard with three aces, Colleen Adams had three kills and eight digs, and
Ali Veasey had nine digs. Bath’s jayvees beat Highland 25-19, 25-15 moving their record to 3-2 in the
Pioneer, 8-3 overall. The Rams fell to 2-3 in the Pioneer, 5-3 overall. Bailey Wolfe led Bath with eight
digs and six assists, Bre Mabe added nine digs and five kills, Kennedi Pritt had six digs and Shiann
Chaplin served four aces. Amelia Good led the Rams with 25 digs and five kills, Brooke Williams had
16 digs and three kills, and Eleanor White served four aces. The Rams middle school team picked up a
win for the Rams defeating Bath County 28-26, 25-12 as they ended their season at 6-6. Bath’s record
stands at 1-6. Addison Sponaugle led Highland with nine aces and two kills, Wren Cox served seven
aces, and Aspen Lupo had four digs. The Chargers were led by Skyler Hickman and Karmen Riley with
each serving four aces.
The Chargers boys’ varsity golf team participated in the Class I, Region C golf tournament at the Omni
Homestead on Monday October 6 th . Akio Long led the Chargers with a 98, Atticus Stauffer scored a
111, Ryan Ratcliffe a 112, and Draven Stidham-Whitmore a 113.
HIGHLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Rams girls’ varsity volleyball team went to Staunton on Monday October 6 th to face VSDB winning
25-17, 25-10, 25-15. Adams had 10 assists, five digs and four aces to lead Highland. Kylie Arbogast had
five kills, Emma Brower added four kills, Sarah Liller had six aces, and Bussard served four aces.
The Rams girls’ varsity volleyball team lost a double-header to Narrows on Friday October 3 rd at
Narrows. The Rams middle school team also lost to Narrows 25-17, 25-12 in the earlier game.
Sponaugle had five digs and three aces to lead the Rams and Ida Farrell added two aces and two kills.
Cox had six digs and both Ashlyn Smith and Lupo had four digs each.
The Rams girls’ varsity, JVs and middle school volleyball teams hosted Craig County on Thursday
October 2 nd . The Rams girls’ varsity lost to Craig County 25-3, 25-19, 25-21. Adams led the Rams with
13 digs, six kills, six assists and two aces. Veasey added 12 digs, Virginia Richardson had 10 digs,
Bussard had six assists and both Anna Meehan and Brower had three kills, and Jade Hotz served
three aces. The Rams JV defeated Craig County 25-22, 25-20. Williams led the Rams with eight aces,
six digs and four kills, Adelaide Baxter had six digs and five kills and Good added five digs and three
kills. The Rams middle school team lost to Craig County 25-21, 25-7. Lupo served four aces for the
Rams, Sponaugle and Cox both had three digs, and Ashlyn Smith had two assists.
TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES
UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA
The University of Virginia Cavaliers men’s football team, ranked #19, defeated Louisville 30-27 in
overtime on October 4 th at Louisville, improving their record to 5-1. Chandler Morris led Virginia by
going 19-for-31 passing for 149 yards and a touchdown. J’Mari Taylor rushed for 6 yards on 16 carries
and a score. Virginia’s defense scored a pair of touchdowns on an interception and a fumble recovery.
WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY
The West Virginia Mountaineers men’s football team lost to BYU 38-24 on October 4 th dropping their
record to 2-4. Khalil Wilkins and Diore Hubbard scored rushing touchdowns for West Virginia.
JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY
The James Madison Dukes men’s football team defeated Georgia State 14-7 in a low scoring affair on
October 4 th improving their record to 4-1. Both Wayne Knight and Alonza Barnett III scored rushing
touchdowns for JMU.
VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY
The Virginia Tech Hokies men’s football team lost to Wake Forest 30-23 at home on October 4 th
dropping their record to 2-4. Kyron Jones led Tech by going 14-for-28 passing for 111 yards and a
touchdown. Marcellous Hawkins scored a rushing touchdown and John Love kicked three field goals.
VIRGINIA- MILITARY INSTITUTE
The Virginia Military Keydets men’s football team fell to 1-4 after losing to Chattanooga 21-14 at home
on October 4 th . VMI scored on an interception by Anthony Allen and two field goals from Ben
Shrewsberry.
