POCAHONTAS COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Pocahontas County Warriors boys’ varsity football team faced another tough game hosting East Hardy on Friday Oct. 4th losing 54-6 dropping their record to 1-5.
The Warriors boys’ varsity soccer team faced Shady Springs in an away match on Thursday Oct. 3rd losing 7-1. Trenton Brock scored the lone goal for Pocahontas. The guys then played Elkins in an away match on Monday Oct. 7th where the game ended in a 1-1 tie, moving their record to 5-5-2. Wade Garber scored the goal for the Warriors.
The Warriors girls’ varsity soccer team won a pair of games this past week, defeating Shady Spring at Shady Spring on Oct. 3rd 5-2 and defeating Lincoln County at home on Oct. 5th 5-0 before losing to Elkins 5-0 on Monday Oct. 7th moving their record to 7-3-2 for the season.
HIGHLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Highland County Rams girls middle school volleyball team lost both double-header games at Shawsville on Friday Oct 3rd. Lalea Mullins had two assists, two aces and four digs for the Rams in the first match. Addison Sponaugle added two aces, Cynthia Warner had three kills and two digs, Kendra Meredith had two kills and served four aces, and Brielle Ruckman had three aces.
On Monday Oct. 7th both the Rams JV and middle school volleyball teams hosted Pendleton County. The JV team played a double-header with Pendleton County winning both games 25-14, 25-23 and 22-25, 25-6, 15-8. The Rams JV fell to 1-4. Ameila Good, of the Rams, had six kills and five aces in the opener, Kynley Smith added seven assists and four digs, Hensley Neil had six assists and Brooke Williams added five kills. In the second match Smith and Neil both had six assists and both Good and Williams had four kills and six digs. The Rams middle school team also lost 19-25, 12-25 to Pendleton County dropping their record to 1-9. Mullins had three aces, two kills, one assist and one dig for Highland, Warner added one assist, one ace and one dig, Sponaugle had one kill, Wren Cox had one assist and both Meredith and Leah Armstrong had one dig.
The Rams varsity volleyball team went on the road to play Parry McCluer in a double-header on Tuesday Oct. 8th losing both games 4-25, 11-25 and 18-25, 12-25 dropping their record to 0-3 in the Pioneer, 0-7 overall. Colleen Adams led Highland with three kills, two assists, one ace and one dig, Jade Hotz had one kill, one block, one assist, one dig and served two aces, and Virginia Richardson added two kills, one ace and one dig. Kylie Arbogast had an ace and Ali Veasey had a dig.
BATH COUNTY SCHOOLS
Both the Bath County Chargers girls’ varsity and JV volleyball teams were quite busy this past week playing in four matches. On the first night the girls’ varsity and JV hosted Buffalo Gap on Wednesday Oct. 2nd. The girls’ varsity won their game 25-20, 25-10, 20-25, and 25-19. Kenley Smith had 30 assists, 10 digs and five kills to lead the Chargers, Bayley Gardzinski had 12 digs, nine kills and four aces, Delaney Hicklin had 14 kills and served four aces. Madison Carter contributed 16 digs. The girls JV lost to Buffalo Gap 24-26, 22-25. Trinity Forbes had eight digs and four kills, Georgia Watkins had seven digs and five kills, Cassidee Nicely had six digs and four kills and Eli Essex had six assists to lead the Bath’s JV girls.
They played again on Thursday Oct. 3rd traveling to Parry McCluer. The Chargers varsity defeated Parry McCluer 25-18, 25-23, 25-27, 13-25, 15-13. Hicklin and Anna Essex had 12 kills each for the Chargers, Smith added five and Gardzinski had four. Smith also had 27 assists and 16 digs, Carter had 27 digs, Gardzinski had 21 digs, Hicklin had 13 digs, and Anna Essex and Embrie Hazelwood had 12 digs apiece. The Chargers JV defeated Parry McCluer 25-8, 25-14. Forbes had five kills and served five aces to lead Bath County, Addy Lockridge had three kills, Nicely had six assists, Elin Essex had four assists and Watkins had three digs.
On Monday Oct. 7th the girls’ varsity and JV played Staunton in away matches. The Chargers varsity lost 17-25, 12-25, 21-25. Gardzinski had seven kills and 11 digs to lead Bath County, while Smith added five kills, six assists and eight digs. Carter had 23 digs and Hicklin added eight digs and three kills, Ana Essex had four kills and five digs, and Kiana Williamson contributed six digs. The Chargers girls JV lost in straight sets 22-25, 16-25. For the Chargers Forbes had three kills and 10 digs, Lockridge, Bre Mabe, and Watkins all had eight digs each.
The fourth night saw the two teams host Narrows on Tuesday Oct. 8th. The Chargers varsity team lost to Narrows 20-25, 25-23, 21-25, 21-25 dropping their record to 4-2 in the Pioneer District, 8-5 overall. Smith had 21 assists, 10 kills and two blocks for Bath County, Carter had 25 digs, Hicklin had 12 digs and 10 kills and Gardzinski had 11 digs and nine kills. Bath’s JV team defeated Narrows in straight sets, 25-17, 22-24, 15-11 moving their record to 4-2 in the Pioneer, 9-4 overall. Nicely had seven digs, 10 assists and five aces, Mabe had nine kills and nine digs, Forbes recorded four kills and eight digs, Lockridge had eight kills, Watkins had 18 digs and Elin Essex handed out six assists.
TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES
UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA
The Virginia Cavaliers men’s football team hosted Boston College in a homecoming game on Oct. 5th winning 24-14 improving their record to 4-1. Anthony Colandrea went 15-for-26 passing for 179 yards and one touchdown to lead the Cavaliers.
The men’s soccer team hosted Virginia Tech on Oct. 4th winning 2-1. Daniel Mangarov and Albin Gashi scored goals for Virginia. On Oct. 8th the guy’s hosted 10th ranked James Madison defeating them 1-0 on an own goal by JMU improving their record to 4-4-3.
The men’s tennis team participated in the River City Classic in Richmond, VA on Oct. 4-6. The guys went 5-2 overall in match play with singles being 3-1 and doubles going 2-1.
The #3 women’s field hockey team split a pair of games this past week, losing to #11 Boston College at Boston College in overtime 3-2 on Oct. 4th and defeating #16 Louisville 1-0 on Oct. 6th at home. The women improved their record to 10-1. Against Boston College Dani Mendez-Trendler scored both goals for Virginia. Against Louisville Taryn Tkachuk scored the winning goal for the Cavaliers.
The #25 women’s soccer team faced #2 Duke in an away match on Oct. 3rd losing 3-1 dropping their record to 8-4. Meredith McDermott scored Virginia’s goal.
The women’s tennis team hosted the Wahoowa Invitational on Oct. 4-6. In singles the UVA women went 10-10 and in doubles play the women finished 8-2 and claimed the doubles title.
The women’s volleyball team hosted a pair of games this past week defeating #16 Florida State on Oct. 4th 3-0 and defeating the University of Miami on Oct. 6th 3-0 improving their record to 13-2.
WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY
The West Virginia Mountaineers men’s football team defeated Oklahoma State in an away game on Oct. 5th 38-14 improving their record to 3-2. Garrett Greene went 9-for-15 through the air for 159 yards passing and one touchdown pass plus adding 86 yards rushing and one more score, Jahiem White rushed for 158 yards on 19 carries and one touchdown, and C.J. Donaldson rushed for 77 yards and two scores to lead the Mountaineer attack.
The men’s soccer team defeated UCF at home on Oct. 5th winning 2-1 moving their record to 7-0-3. Sergio Ors Navarro and Marcus Caldeira scored goals for West Virginia.
The women’s cross-country team participated in the Live in Lou Classic in Kentucky on Oct. 5th where they captured first place out of 27 teams in the 5K team event. The top three Lady Mountaineer runners placed first, fifth, and eighth individually.
The women’s soccer team defeated UCF at home on Oct.4th, winning 1-0 to improve their record to 9-2-2. Lilly McCarthy scored the winning goal for West Virginia.
The women’s tennis team hosted the Martha Thorn Invitational on Oct. 4-6. The Lady Mountaineers went 3-8 in singles play and 4-1 in doubles matches.
The women’s volleyball team dropped a pair of away games this past week losing to UCF 3-0 on Oct. 2nd and losing to Houston 3-1 on Oct 4th dropping their record to 6-9.
The men’s golf team participated in the Big 12 Match Play Championship in Texas from Oct. 7-8. The Mountaineers played against Utah finishing 2-2-1, BYU losing 1-4-0, Houston losing 1-3-1, and UCF winning 3-2-0.
JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY
The James Madison Dukes men’s football team suffered their first loss of the season facing LA Monroe in an away game on Oct. 5th losing 21-19 moving their record to 4-1. Alonzo Barnett III went 20-for-47 through the air for 251 yards passing and rushed for 49 more yards and a rushing TD to lead the Dukes. Tyler Purdy added a touchdown.
The #10 men’s soccer team faced #5 Marshall at Marshall on Oct. 4th playing to a 2-2 tie. Evan Southern and Josiah Blanton both scored goals for James Madison. The Dukes played Virginia at Virginia on Oct. 8th losing 1-0 dropping their record to 5-1-4.
The men’s tennis team participated in the River City Tennis Open on Oct. 4-6. The Dukes went 28-8 for the weekend, turning in an 18-6 singles record and a 10-2 doubles mark.
The women’s cross-country team participated in the Paul Short Run in Pennsylvania on Oct. 5th, placing 14th out of 35 teams.
The women’s field hockey team won a pair of games this past week defeating Ohio at Ohio on Oct. 4th winning 5-1 and then defeating Richmond at home on Oct. 6th winning 2-1 improving their record to 8-2. Brynna Hill scored two goals, while Mia Julien, Julie Narleski, and Elena Giangaspero added one goal each. Against Richmond Cassid Strittmatter and Skyler Brown scored goals for JMU.
The women’s golf team participated in the Evie Odom Invitational on Oct. 4-6 and placed 14th out of 14 teams competing.
The women’s soccer team played ULM in Louisiana on Oct. 4th playing to a 1-1 tie moving their record to 5-3-3. Amanda Attanasi and Ginny Lackey scored goals for James Madison.
The women’s tennis team participated in the Wahoowa Invitational on Oct. 4-6. The Lady Dukes won a total of nine matches between singles and doubles.
The women’s volleyball team traveled to Georgia to play Georgia State in a double-header on Oct. 4-5 splitting the pair of games. The Lady Dukes lost game one 3-2 and won game two 3-1, moving their record to 6-8.
VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY
The Virginia Tech Hokies men’s football team traveled to California to play Stanford on Oct. 5th, winning 31-7 to even their record at 3-3. Kyron Drones went 14-for-19 passing for 201 yards and two touchdowns plus added another rushing touchdown to lead the Hokies. Bhayshul Tuten added 73 yards rushing on 21 carries and a touchdown run.
The men’s and women’s golf teams participated in the Blessings Collegiate Invitational in Arkansas on Sept. 30-Oct. 2 and both placed 10th out of 10 teams.
The women’s soccer team played a pair of games this past week, forcing Miami to a 0-0 draw on Oct. 3rd in Florida and defeating #6 Florida State 2-1 at home on Oct. 6th improving their record to 9-3-2. Sarah Rosenbaum, Kylie Marshall, and Taylor Price all scored for the Hokies against Florida State.
The women’s tennis team participated in the Hall of Fame Invite in Williamsburg, VA on Oct. 4-6.
The women’s volleyball team hosted a pair of games this past weekend, losing to Miami 3-0 on Oct. 4th and losing to #16 Florida State 3-0 on Oct. 6th dropping their record to 6-8.
The men’s soccer team lost to Virginia 2-1 in an away game on Oct. 4th dropping their record to 6-3-1. Yonis Kireh scored the lone goal for Virginia Tech.
VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE
The Virginia Military Keydets men’s football team fell to 0-5 on Oct. 5th losing to Samford in an away game 27-3.
The men’s soccer team played a pair of games this past week, defeating Regent 2-0 at home on Oct. 4th then traveling to ETSU on Oct. 6th losing 2-0 dropping their record to 4-5-2. Peyton Gysel and Jordan Savage scored goals for VMI against Regent.
The women’s soccer team lost a pair of games this past week hosting Western Carolina on Oct. 3rd losing 5-0 before traveling to Mercer on Oct. 6th where they lost 1-0 dropping their record to 5-7-1.
