POCAHONTAS COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Pocahontas County Warriors boys’ varsity football team hosted Wirt County in a gridiron contest on Friday Oct. 11th losing 67-12 dropping their record to 1-6 for the season. The Warriors scored twice in the first half on a nine-yard touchdown pass from Gavin Delair to Morgan Beverage and on a 44-yard touchdown run from Austin Price.

The Warriors boys’ middle school football team went on the road to play Webster County losing 33-18 on Wednesday Oct. 9th.

The Warriors boys’ varsity soccer team hosted Webster County on Tuesday Oct. 15th winning 8-0, improving their record to 6-5-2.

The Warriors girls’ varsity soccer team went on the road to Greenbrier East losing 5-0 on Tuesday Oct. 15th dropping their record to 7-4-2.

HIGHLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS

All three of the Highland County Rams girls’ volleyball teams (varsity, JV, middle school) were quite busy this past week playing in several matches. In the first game, the girls’ varsity, JV and middle school teams traveled to Craig County on Thursday night Oct. 10th. The varsity team lost the double-header match 7-25, 24-26, 10-25 and 21-25, 23-25. Colleen Adams served four aces, had four digs and three kills, Jade Hotz served six aces and had four digs, Virginia Richardson had eight digs and three aces, Sarah Liller had five digs and two aces, Ava Summers served three aces, Ali Veasey had two digs and Kylie Arbogast was credited with two kills. Highland’s JV team lost 21-25, 20-25. Amelia Good had six kills, four aces and two digs for Highland, Brooke Williams had three kills and three digs, Kynley Smith had three kills and four assists. Elanor White had four digs and Hensley Neil had five assists. The Rams middle school team came up with a victory winning 25-23, 25-23. For the Rams Addison Sponaugle had two aces, four digs and six points, Lalea Mullins had two assists, four aces, two digs and seven points, Cynthia Warner had one kill, one ace, two digs and three points, Lucy Honaker had one ace and two points, Wren Cox had six kills, two assists, two aces and six points, Kendra Meredith had two kills, seven aces and 10 points while Brielle Ruckman had one kill.

On the second night, Friday Oct. 11th, the Rams varsity and middle school volleyball teams hosted Union Educational Complex. The Rams varsity team won their first game of the season, going 28-26, 25-19, 25-21. Adams had seven kills, six assists, four aces and seven digs. Arbogast added nine aces, three digs and two kills, Liller had five assists, Veasey had four aces and six digs, and Summers had three aces. The Highland middle school team lost 11-25, 25-23, 9-15. Meredith had three kills, four aces and two digs for the Rams, Mullins had eight assists, served six aces and had three digs, Ruby Huffman served three aces, Sponaugle had three kills, Cox had three aces and three digs, and Aspen Lugo had four digs.

On Monday Oct. 14th the Rams girls’ varsity and middle school volleyball teams were on the road to face Tygarts Valley, WV. The Rams varsity team lost 22-25, 22-25, 23-25. Adams had six kills, served eight aces and had three digs to lead the Rams. Richardson added four kills, Liller had three digs and Summers had two assists. The Highland middle school team defeated Tygarts Valley 25-13, 25-10 improving their record to 3-10. Meredith served 14 aces and had five kills and two digs for the Rams. Mullins added two assists and three aces, Cox had seven assists and four aces, Warner had three digs, Sponaugle added two kills and Ruckman served up two aces.

On Tuesday night this past week on Oct. 15th, the Rams varsity and JV volleyball teams hosted Richwood, WV. The girls’ varsity team won for the second time this season defeating Richwood 25-18, 25-22, 25-15 moving their record to 0-5 in the Pioneer District, 2-10 overall. Adams had six kills, six assists, four aces and three digs to lead Highland, while Veasey added four kills, two assists, three aces and five digs. Hotz added three kills, Richardson had four aces, and Liller served three aces. The Highland JV team also came up winners defeating Richwood 25-17, 25-12 moving their record to 0-2 in the Pioneer, 2-5 overall for the season. Good had six kills and six aces for the Rams while White had four aces and Smith chipped in with three aces and three digs.

BATH COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Bath County Chargers boys JV football team hosted Auburn on Wednesday Oct. 9th losing 54-0 dropping their record to 0-4.

The Chargers boys’ varsity team took on the Bland County Bears in an away contest in a rare Thursday night game on Oct. 10th winning 63-0 to remain undefeated at 5-0. The score was 50-0 at halftime. Braiden Mabe, Luke Turner scored twice, while Wyatt Campbell, A.J. St. Clair, Isaac Ingram and A.J. Woodson scored one touchdown each. Campbell was 6-for-7 through the air for 99 yards passing and four touchdowns with two going to Mabe. Campbell passed the 100 combined touchdown mark for his high school career in the second quarter with a pass to Turner. Mabe and Campbell both scored defensive touchdowns in the first quarter on a fumble return and an interception. Ethan Bryant had 11 tackles, five for a loss, Mabe had six tackles, three for a loss, Jeremy Burns and six tackles, three for a loss, and Dillan Royer had six tackles, three for a loss to lead Bath County’s defense.

The Chargers girls’ varsity and JV volleyball teams hit the road going to Eastern Montgomery on Thursday Oct. 10th. The Chargers varsity team won, improving their record to 5-2 in the Pioneer District, 9-5 overall. The Bath JV team lost 26-28, 20-25 dropping their record to 4-3 in the Pioneer, 9-5 overall. Cassidee Nicely worked in 11 digs and eight assists for Bath County, Addy Lockridge had six kills and three aces, Bre Mabe had 10 digs, Elin Essex had five assists and Trinity Forbes was credited with four kills.

TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES

UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

The Virginia Cavaliers men’s football team suffered their second loss of the season losing to Louisville 24-20 in a home contest dropping their record to 4-2. Anthony Colandrea went 26-for-45 through the air for 279 yards passing and one touchdown while adding 84 yards of rushing on 15 carries to lead the Cavaliers.

The men’s soccer team went on the road to face Boston College on Oct. 11th winning 1-0. Nick Dang scored the winning goal for UVA. The men hosted American, winning 4-2, on Oct. 15th improving their record to 6-4-3. Kome Ubogu scored two goals for Virginia with Dang and Luke Burns adding one apiece.

The #3 women’s field hockey team faced #8 Saint Joseph’s at home on Oct. 13th losing 5-2 dropping their record to 10-2. Emma Watchilla and Mia Abello scored goals for Virginia.

The #25 women’s soccer team hosted two games this past week, defeating NC State 3-0 on Oct. 10th and defeating SMU 2-1 on Oct. 13th raising their record to 10-4. Against NC State Meredith McDermott, Allie Ross, and Maya Carter scored for Virginia. Against SMU Lia Godfrey and McDermott scored goals for the Cavaliers.

The Lady Cavaliers volleyball team were on the road for two games this past week, defeating Clemson 3-0 on Oct. 11th and dropping a contest to #20 Georgia Tech 3-0 on Oct. 13th moving their record to 14-3.

WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY

The Mountaineers of West Virginia men’s football team fell to 3-3 for the season losing to Iowa State at home 28-16. Garrett Greene went 18-of-32 in the air for 206 yards passing and one touchdown and rushed for 87 yards on 10 carries to lead West Virginia.

The men’s soccer team traveled to Georgia to play Georgia Southern on Oct. 11th winning 4-2. Marcus Caldeira scored two goals for the Mountaineers with Sergio Ors Navarro and Isaac Scheer adding one apiece. On Oct. 15th West Virginia traveled to Ohio to face Dayton losing 5-1 dropping their record to 8-1-3. Caldeira scored the lone goal for the Mountaineers.

The women’s cross-country team participated in the Carnegie Mellon Invitational on Oct. 12th, placing second out of 16 teams. The Lady Mountaineers captured three of the top eight spots including first and fourth places individually.

The Mountaineers women’s soccer team traveled through Texas this past week losing to #12 TCU 3-1 on Oct. 10th and defeating Baylor 2-0 on Oct. 13th moving their record to 10-3-2. Against TCU Taylor White scored for West Viriginia. Against Baylor Olivia Shertzer and Dilary Heredia-Beltran scored goals for the Mountaineers.

The women’s volleyball team hosted a pair of games this past week losing to #8 Kansas 3-0 on Oct. 10th and losing to Kansas State 3-2 on Oct. 13th dropping their record to 6-11.

JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY

The James Madison Dukes men’s football team got back on the winning track as they defeated Coastal Carolina 39-7 in a home contest on Oct. 10th moving their record to 5-1. Alonzo Barnett III went 16-of-28 passing for 199 yards and three touchdowns, Barnett also rushed for one touchdown to lead the Dukes.

The men’s golf team participated in the Red Hawk Intercollegiate on Oct. 14-15 in Ohio. AS a team James Madison finished in a tie for fifth out of 16 teams. Two of JMU’s golfers finished in the top ten individually with Daniel Chang who placed third.

The men’s soccer team played a pair of games this past week hosting Coastal Carolina on Oct. 12th with a 0-0 tie and defeating Georgia Southern 3-1 in Georgia on Oct. 15th moving their record to 6-1-5. Against Georgia Southern Kevin Larsson scored two goals for JMU with Yanis Lelin adding one more.

The men’s tennis team participated in the ITA Atlantic Regional Championship in North Carolina on Oct. 10-13. The men went 18-15 going 11-11 in singles play and 7-4 in doubles matches.

The women’s field hockey team played a pair of games this past week defeating Kent State at home 3-0 on oct. 11th before losing to Old Dominion 3-2 in overtime in Norfolk, VA on Oct. 13th. Against Kent State Alice Roeper scored two goals with Cassid Strittmatter adding one more. Against Old Dominion Roeper and Carissa Tambroni scored goals for JMU.

The women’s soccer team won a pair of games this past week defeating Georgia State 1-0 at home on Oct. 9th and defeating Georgia Southern 3-1 in an away match on Oct. 13th improving their record to 7-3-3. Against Georgia State Ginny Lackey scored a goal for JMU. Against Georgia Southern Lexi Vanderlinden scored two goals and Lackey added one for James Madison.

The women’s volleyball team played in a double-header at Marshall on Oct. 11-12 winning 3-0 and 3-1, moving their record to 8-8 for the season.

VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY

The Virginia Tech Hokies men’s golf team took part in the Qubein Cup on Oct. 14-15 in North Carolina. The guys finished 14th out of 14 teams.

The men’s soccer team hosted a pair of games this past week. The first game was against NC State which resulted in a 0-0 tie on Oct. 11th and the last one was against Winthrop which the Hokies won 6-0 on Oct. 15th improving their record to 7-3-2. Against Winthrop Ethan Hackenberg, Andy Sullins, Malick Thiaw, Yonis Kireh, Alex Perez, and Oliver Roche scored goals for VT.

The men’s tennis team participated in the ITA Regional Championships on Oct. 10-14.

The women’s golf team participated in the Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational in North Carolina finishing 10th out of 17 teams. Two of the Hokie golfers finished in the top 20 individually.

The women’s soccer team hosted SMU winning 1-0 on Oct. 10th moving their record to 10-3-2. Taylor Price scored the winning goal for Virginia Tech.

The women’s volleyball team went on the road losing to #20 Georgia Tech 3-0 on Oct. 11th and then defeating Clemson 3-1 on O ct. 13th moving their record to 7-9.

VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE

The Virginia Military Keydets men’s football team took another one to the chin losing to Wofford 31-16 dropping their record to 0-6.

The men’s soccer team lost against Mercer 3-0 at home on Oct. 12th dropping their record to 4-6-2 for the season.

The women’s soccer team hosted Samford on Oct. 11th losing 5-0 dropping their record to 5-8-1.

Scott Smith is the General Manager for Allegheny Mountain Radio and Station Coordinator and News Reporter for WVLS. Scott’s family has deep roots in Highland County. While he did not grow up here, he spent as much time as possible on the family farm, and eventually moved to Highland to continue the tradition, which he still pursues with his cousin. Unfortunately, farming doesn’t pay all the bills, so he has previously taken other jobs to support his farming hobby, including pressman/writer for The Recorder, and Ag Projects Coordinator for The Highland Center.
