POCAHONTAS COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Warriors girls’ varsity basketball team played Greenbrier West at home on Dec 8th losing 56-31 dropping their record to 1-2. Riley Pollock led the Warriors with 11 points.

The boys’ varsity basketball team faced Pendelton County in an away game on Tuesday night Dec 12th losing 62-32 dropping their record to 0-2.

BATH COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Bath County Chargers boys’ varsity basketball team upended James River Wednesday night Dec 6th in Springwood 44-41. Issac Ingram led Bath County with 20 points and eight rebounds, Luke Turner scored 14 points and had six rebounds, Andrew Turner tossed in eight points and Frankie DeBoe added five rebounds. The Chargers lost their district opener Tuesday night Dec 12th to the Eastern Montgomery Mustangs 70-55 dropping their record to 0-1 in the Pioneer District, 2-4 overall. Turner tossed in 19 points, Campbell added 16, and Ingram scored 10 points for the Chargers.

The boy’s junior varsity basketball team lost to Eastern Montgomery 49-26 on Dec 12th. The JV team fell to 1-3 for the season. Remington Gordon led Bath County with 11 points.

The girl’s junior varsity basketball team came up with the win against Eastern Montgomery winning 29-19 moving their record to 2-1. Trinity Forbes scored 17 points to lead the Chargers while Sophie Ailstock added eight points and Macey Paxton had four.

The boys’ varsity wrestling team wrestled in the Titan Toughman Dec 8-9 hosted by Hidden Valley High School. A.J. Woodson finished as the 144-pound runner-up in the tournament with a 3-1 record. Ethan Bryant finished in fourth at 157 pounds with a 3-2 record. The Chargers placed 14th in the 22-team tournament.

HIGHLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Rams boys’ varsity basketball team came up with a road win Tuesday night Dec 12th against Craig County winning 38-36 raising their record to 1-0 in the Pioneer District, 1-2 overall. Eli Moore scored 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds to lead Highland. Greg Meehan chipped in with nine points, John Wagner added eight points and eight rebounds. Zach Armstrong contributed six rebounds and five assists.

The Lady Rams varsity basketball team lost to Craig County 47-9 Tuesday night Dec 12th in New Castle. The Rams dropped to 0-1 in the Pioneer District, 0-3 overall. Hannah Meyerhoeffer scored three points, Jazmine Douglas added five rebounds, Zalea Good had three rebounds and Annah Moyers had two steals.

The Rams middle school girls’ basketball team lost to Marlinton in overtime 33-25 dropping their record to 4-3. Addison Lockridge led the Rams with 10 points and Brooklyn Bussard had six. The middle school boys’ team lost to Marlinton 45-19 moving their record to 0-7. Preston Jaccard had eight points and four rebounds for Highland while Gavin Neave pulled down seven rebounds.

TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES

VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE

The Virginia Military Keydets men’s basketball team took on American at home on Dec 9th losing 77-69. Brennan Watkins led the Keydets in scoring with 20 points. VMI then faced Radford in Radford, VA losing 73-56 dropping their record to 2-9. Three Keydets scored in double figures led by Tyron Cook with 20 points.  Taeshaud Jackson II chipped in with 13 rebounds.

The men’s wrestling team faced Kent State in Kent, OH winning 23-16 on Dec 8th. Five Keydet wrestlers won their weight class in the dual meet. The men then traveled to Cleveland, OH to participate in the Cleveland State Open on Dec 9th. The Keydets won 11 of the 39 matches they took part in with Patrick Jordan finishing in fourth in the 141-pound weight class going 3-2 in five matches. Ryan Vigil and Eric Doran each won two of their matches.

JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY

The James Madison Dukes men’s basketball team traveled to Norfolk, VA to play Old Dominion on Dec 9th winning 84-69 to remain undefeated at 9-0. T.J. Bickerstaff scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Dukes while Terrence Edwards, Jr, Michael Green III, and Jaylen Carey each scored 13 points.

The women’s basketball team hosted William & Mary on Dec 7th winning 75-56 moving their record to 7-3. Kseniia Kozlova scored 20 points to led James Madison and Peyton McDaniel added 10 points and 10 rebounds.

The women’s cross-country team participated in the NCAA Southeast Regional on Nov 10th in Spartanburg, SC. Miranda Stanhope led the Dukes with a 33rd place finish in the 6K distance. James Madison placed 19th out of 34 scoring teams.

UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

The Virginia Cavaliers men’s wrestling team participated in the Cleveland State Open in Cleveland, OH on Dec 9th. Keyveon Roller took sixth place at 133 pounds to lead the Cavaliers.  Roller went 4-2 for the day. Also participating were Sammie Hayes who finished at 0-2 for the meet and Gavin Cagle who was 1-2.

The University of Virginia Cavaliers women’s basketball team played against the Rider Broncs in Charlottesville, VA on Dec 6th winning 78-51 moving their record to 7-2. Camryn Taylor led Virginia with 18 points and 13 rebounds, Alexia Smith added 11 points, and Jilian Brown scored eight points and grabbed 11 boards off the glass.

WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY

The West Virginia Mountaineers men’s basketball team split a pair of games this past week before the winter break. On Dec 6th West Virginia faced Pitt at home losing 80-63 and on Dec 9th faced Drexel at home winning 66-60 moving their record to 4-5 for the season. Against Pitt two Mountaineers scored over twenty points with Quinn Slazinski scoring 22 and Jesse Edwards adding 20. Against Drexel Edwards scored 16 points and Slazinski added 14.

The women’s basketball team remained undefeated at 9-0 winning against Delaware State 107-43 at home on Dec 10th. Six players for the Mountaineers scored in double figures, led by J.J. Quinerly with 25 and Kylee Blacksten with 16.

The men’s wrestling team won a pair of matches out in Colorado beating Air Force on Dec 8th 27-11 and Northern Colorado on Dec 10th 31-9 moving their record to 6-1. Against Air Force seven Mountaineer wrestlers won their weight classification led by Ty Watters earning six points. Against Northern Colorado eight Mountaineers won their weight classification led by Watters again with six points.

VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY

The Virginia Tech Hokies men’s basketball team beat Valparaiso at home on Dec 9th 71-50 moving their record to 7-3. Three Tech players scored in double figures led by Hunter Cattoor with 19.

The women’s basketball team won a pair of games last week beating LIU on Dec 6th 98-50 and Radford 85-40 on Dec 10th to move their record to 7-2. Against LIU six Tech players scored in double figures led by Cayla King with 21, Carys Baker with 18, and Elizabeth Kitley with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Against Radford five Tech players hit double figures. Kitley led the way with 16 points and 13 boards off the glass, Georgia Amoore had 15 points, and Clara Stack added 10 rebounds.

LIBERTY UNIVERSITY

The Liberty Flames men’s basketball team lost to Grand Canyon 69-64 on Dec 9th dropping their record to 7-3. Four players for Liberty led a balanced scoring attack with Zach Cleveland hitting 13, Kaden Metheny and Colin Porter scoring 12 points each, and Kyle Rode adding 10 points. Joseph Venzant added 11 rebounds.

The women’s basketball team ran into a buzzsaw when playing #3 NC State in Raleigh, NC on Dec 10th losing 80-67. Three Flames players scored in double figures led by Asia Boone with 17 points. Bella Smuda added 14 points and 16 rebounds.

While he did not grow up here, he spent as much time as possible on the family farm, and eventually moved to Highland to continue the tradition, which he still pursues with his cousin. Unfortunately, farming doesn’t pay all the bills, so he has previously taken other jobs to support his farming hobby, including pressman/writer for The Recorder, and Ag Projects Coordinator for The Highland Center.
