POCAHONTAS COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Pocahontas County Warriors boys’ varsity and junior varsity basketball teams split a pair of home games this past week. The varsity defeated Richwood 57-25 on Thursday December 12th and lost to East Hardy 85-15 on Saturday December 14th, moving their record to 1-1. Prior to the varsity game the JV’s defeated Richwood 52-28 and lost to East Hardy 71-66, placing them at 1-1 for the season.
The Warriors girls’ varsity and junior varsity teams played several games this past week. The varsity defeated Moorefield 55-52 on Wednesday December 11th, defeated Greenbrier West 60-52 on Friday December 13th, and beat Pendleton County 64-53 on Monday December 16th moving their record to 3-0. Before the varsity games the JV’s defeated Moorefield 39-36 and beat Greenbrier West 31-27, to remain undefeated at 2-0.
HIGHLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Highland Rams girls and boys middle school teams both played on Thursday December 12th on the road. Both teams had a tough go of it with the girls losing to Green Bank 55-13 and the boys losing to Green Bank 50-9. For the Rams girls Addison Sponaugle scored five points, grabbed five rebounds and had five blocked shots. The Rams boys were led by Lane Neil who had five points. The boys’ and girls’ teams played again on Friday December 13th at home against Shawsville. The Rams girls won 22-17 with Kendra Meredith and Sponaugle leading the way. Meredith scored eight points and Sponaugle scored five points and pulled down 20 rebounds, five steals and had four blocked shots. The girls improved their record to 2-3. The boys fell to Shawsville 63-8, dropping their record to 0-5, with Colton Lightner scoring seven points and Kaden Neil grabbing six rebounds.
The Rams middle school teams played a coed game against Harman, WV on Monday December 16th where the boys played the first and third quarters and the girls played the second and fourth quarters. The final score was 61-11 with Harman winning. Meredith scored four points for the Rams girls and Neil scored three points for the Rams boys.
The Rams girl’s junior varsity basketball team played Bath County on the road on Friday December 13th winning 35-16. Colleen Adams led the Lady Rams with 24 points, five steals and three rebounds while Amelia Good scored eight points and Brooke Williams grabbed 10 rebounds. The Chargers girls were led by Macey Paxton with seven points and Bre Mabe scoring six points. The Lady Rams then played Richwood, WV on December 16th winning 27-18. Adams scored 12 points, grabbed seven rebounds, three steals and handed out two assists to lead Highland, and Good scored 11 points and had three steals. The Lady Rams kept their winning streak alive at three games defeating Parry McCluer 25-19 on Tuesday December 17th moving their record to 3-1 for the season. Adams scored 14 points and had four rebounds for Highland County, Williams scored five, Good had four points and Adelaide Baxter scored two. Williams also grabbed five rebounds and Good had four.
The Rams boys’ varsity basketball team hosted Richwood WV on Monday December 16th, winning 52-35. John Wagner led the Rams with 15 points and Eli Moore added 11. Zach Armstrong, Patton Hull and Elijah Good scored seven each. Armstrong also had 11 assists, 10 rebounds, three blocks plus two steals while Good had six rebounds and four steals. On Tuesday December 17th, the Rams played Parry McCluer, losing 53-42, moving their record to 0-1 in the Pioneer, 2-3 overall. Wagner had a double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Rams. Armstrong scored 10 points and had seven assists, Good had six points and 13 rebounds, and Eli Moore had six points and seven rebounds.
BATH COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Bath County wrestling team took part in the Morse Reese Memorial Duals Tournament on Saturday December 14th. Bath County finished in fourth place out of seven teams going 2-3 for the outing. Jeremy Burn went 5-0 individually with five pins, Tyler Shaver was 4-1 with four pins, and both Paxton Rivenbark and Noah Bolling posted 3-2 records. On Tuesday December 17th the Chargers wrestling team participated in a quad meet with Monticello, East Rockingham and host Staunton. Ethan Bryant, Jeremy Burns and Paxton Rivenbark all went 3-0 for the Chargers, with Burns and Rivenbark recording three pins each. Tyler Shaver, Emily Robertson, A.J. Woodson, Noah Bolling and Caleb Harrison were all 2-1. Charger eighth graders Harris Ellis, Jesse Perry and Draven Stidham-Whitmore wrestled exhibition matches. Ellis was 2-0 with two pins, and both Perry and Stidham-Whitmore were 1-0.
The Chargers boys’ varsity basketball team played on the road Friday December 13th against James River losing 66-46. Luke Turner led Bath with 22 points and Cooper Lowry scored 11. On Tuesday December 17th, the guy’s hosted Narrows losing 82-43 dropping their record to 0-1 in the Pioneer District, 1-4 overall. Luke Turner led the Chargers with 18 points, Nathaniel Turner had 16 points while Issac Ingram and Braiden Mabe scored 10 apiece.
The Chargers girls’ varsity basketball team got crunched by Narrows on Monday December 16th losing 65-20 dropping their record to 0-1 in the Pioneer District, 2-1 overall. Addie Lockridge led Bath with 12 points and Bre Mabe added four.
TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES
UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA
The Virginia Cavaliers men’s basketball team defeated Bethune-Cookman 59-41 in a home contest on December 12th moving their record to 6-4 for the season. Elijah Saunders led UVA with 15 points and eight boards while Jacob Cofie and Ishan Sharma contributed 12 points each. Cofie also had 10 rebounds.
The women’s basketball team improved to 6-4 for the season after defeating Maryland-Eastern Shore 80-64 on December 17th. Kymore Johnson scored 24 points and Latasha Lattimore added 18 points and 15 rebounds to lead Virginia.
WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY
The West Virginia Mountaineers men’s basketball team beat Bethune-Cookman 84-61 in a home contest on December 14th improving their record to 8-2. Javon Small led the Mountaineers with 27 points and going 11-11 for free throws.
The #18 men’s wrestling team lost to California Baptist 18-15 in a home contest on December 15th moving their record to 3-1. Five WVU wrestlers earned wins by decisions.
The Lady Mountaineers basketball team improved to 10-1 by beating Temple 68-46 in an away contest on December 15th. Five Mountaineers scored in double figures led by Kyah Watson who scored 15 points and grabbed 10 rebounds off the glass.
JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY
The James Madison Dukes women’s basketball team picked up a win against Villanova 71-67 in an away contest on December 15th, improving their record to 8-3. Peyton McDaniel, Jamia Hazell, Kseniia Kozlova and Zakiya Stephenson led JMU with a balanced scoring attack with 13 points, 12, 11 and 10 points respectively.
The men’s basketball team played Wake Forest on the road on December 17th losing 75-58 dropping their record to 6-5. Mark Freeman scored 14 points to lead the Dukes.
VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY
The Virginia Tech Hokies men’s basketball team picked up a pair of home wins this past week defeating North Carolina A&T 95-67 on December 12th and beating Navy 80-72 on December 15th, moving their record to 5-6. Against NC A&T Ben Hammond led Tech in scoring with 17 points. Against Navy Ben Burnham led the Tech scoring attack with 17 points.
The women’s basketball team earned a win against Radford at home on December 15th winning 73-34 moving their record to 8-3. Lani White scored 23 points and Carleigh Wenzel added 22 points to lead Virginia Tech over Radford.
VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE
The Virginia Military Keydets men’s basketball team defeated Regent 100-61 at home on December 12th, moving their record to 6-6 for the season. Six players scored in double figures for VMI led by Rickey Bradley, Jr. with 20 points.
The men’s wrestling team faced Appalachian State on December 12th at home losing 40-6 dropping their record to 4-5. Dyson Dunham and Braxton Lewis picked up wins for VMI.
