POCAHONTAS COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Warriors boys’ varsity basketball team lost to Midland Trail Friday night Dec 15th at home 93-47. On Dec 20th the Warriors faced Moorefield in an away game losing 55-46 dropping their record to 0-4.

BATH COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Chargers boys’ varsity basketball team beat Richwood, WV Thursday night Dec 14th at home winning 62-52. Wyatt Campbell scored 34 points for Bath County. Issac Ingram and Greyson Walton both added nine points. On Monday night Dec 18th the Chargers played Buffalo Gap in Swoope losing 66-42 who fell to 3-6. Luke Turner led the Chargers with 11 points, Ingram added nine points and both Walton and Luke Hooker scored seven each.

The Chargers boy’s junior varsity basketball team lost to Richwood, WV 39-28 Thursday night Dec 14th. Remington Gordon scored 10 points for the Chargers. The Chargers JV boys’ team lost to Buffalo Gap 38-14 dropping their record to 1-5. Dylan Hicklin scored 10 points for Bath County.

The Lady Chargers girl’s junior varsity basketball team lost to Richwood, WV on Dec 14th at home 29-26 moving their record to 2-2. Trinity Forbes scored 13 points and Zoey Jenkins added six points for the Chargers.

HIGHLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Rams boys’ varsity basketball team earned another win Wednesday night Dec 13th beating Boys Home 54-24 in Covington. Eli Moore scored 21 points with John Wagner netting 13 for the Rams. The guys remained undefeated in District play after beating Bath County Friday night Dec 15th 59-48 at Monterey. Wagner scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Highland. Moore added 16 points and 23 boards with Zach Armstrong contributing 12 points, seven assists and six steals.

The Rams middle school girls’ basketball team beat Green Bank on Thursday Dec 14th winning 25-5 moving their record to 5-3. Addison Lockridge scored 12 points for Highland.

The boys middle school basketball team lost to Green Bank on Dec 14th 35-28 dropping to 0-8.

The Rams girl’s junior varsity basketball team also beat Bath County Friday night Dec 15th in Monterey 33-16. Since Bath County did not have a girls varsity team it was made a junior varsity game. Colleen Adams had 10 points and 17 rebounds for the Rams, Annah Moyers added eight points, Jazmine Douglas had nine rebounds and Zalea Good had seven points and seven rebounds.

TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES

VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE

The Virginia Military Keydets basketball team faced Longwood in Farmville, VA on Dec 17th losing 68-49 dropping their record to 2-10. Tyran Cook led VMI with 14 points and nine rebounds.

JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY

The James Madison Dukes men’s varsity basketball team beat Hampton in an away game on Dec 16th winning 88-71. Six players scored in double figures for the Dukes led by Xavier Brown with 17 points and Michael Green III with 16. Jaylen Carey added 12 points and 10 rebounds. James Madison then played Coppin State at home on Dec 19th winning 87-48 to remain undefeated at 11-0. Four players for the Dukes scored in double figures led by T.J. Bickerstaff with 18 points and seven rebounds.

The women’s basketball team played Maine in Orono, ME winning 78-71. Kseniia Kozlova led the Dukes in scoring with 20 while Peyton McDaniel added 18 points and12 rebounds. James Madison then traveled to College Park, MD to face the Maryland Terrapins on Dec 20th losing 78-55 dropping their record to 8-4. McDaniel led James Madison with 25 points and eight rebounds.

UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

The #22 University of Virginia Cavaliers men’s basketball team faced Northeastern in a home match-up on Dec 16th, winning 56-54. Reece Beekman led Virginia with 21 points and six rebounds. The Cavaliers then faced the #23 Memphis Tigers in Memphis, TN on Dec 19th losing 77-54 dropping their record to 9-2. Beekman led Virginia in scoring with 13 points and Ryan Dunn added 11 points and 11 rebounds.

The women’s basketball team played Wofford in a home tilt on Dec 16th losing 71-70 dropping their record to 7-3. Paris Clark and Olivia McGhee scored 14 points apiece to lead the Cavaliers while London Clarkson added nine rebounds.

WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY

The West Virginia Mountaineers men’s basketball team played Massachusetts in Springfield, MA on Dec 16th losing 87-79. Kerr Kriisa and Quinn Slazinski both scored 20 points to lead the Mountaineers. On Dec 20th at home the Mountaineers played Radford, losing 66-65 dropping their record to 4-7. RaeQuan Battle led West Virginia in scoring with 29 points.

The women’s basketball team beat Wright State in an afternoon game on Dec 18th winning 77-72 to remain undefeated at 10-0. J.J. Quinerly led West Virginia with 30 points and five rebounds.

The #20 men’s wrestling team took care of business in a match against Fairmont State at home on Dec 19th, winning 56-0, improving their record to 7-1. The guys won all ten of their matches led by Davin Rhodes who won by a major decision and Brody Conley and Austin Colley who scored tech falls.

VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY

The Virginia Tech Hokies men’s basketball team faced Vermont in a home game on Dec 16th winning 73-51 to move their record to 8-3. Lynn Kidd led the Hokies with 17 points and 11 rebounds.

The #11 men’s wrestling team faced #19 Stanford at home on Dec 17th winning 29-7 to move their record to 3-1. The Hokies won nine of the ten matches with Sam Latona and Mekhi Lewis winning on major decisions and Caleb Henson winning on a tech fall.

The women’s basketball team played Rutgers up in Piscataway, NJ on Dec 17th winning 84-59 moving their record to 8-2. Matilda Ekh led Tech with 25 points while Georgia Amoore and Olivia Summiel added 18 points each. Summiel also contributed 11 rebounds.

LIBERTY UNIVERSITY

The Liberty Flames men’s basketball team scored a pair of victories this past week beating Tennessee State on Dec 13th 74-52 and St. Andrews on Dec 16th 99-26. Both games were at home. Against Tennessee State Kyle Rode led Liberty with 18 points and Joseph Venzant added 12 points and 12 rebounds. Against St. Andrews both Brody Peebles and Zander Yates scored 23 points to lead Liberty. Liberty then traveled to Orem, UT to play Utah Valley, winning 79-63 moving their record to 10-3. Four Flames players were in double figures led by Zach Cleveland with 19 points and Rode with 15 points.

The Lady Flames basketball team lost a pair of games this past week against Radford on Dec 13th 57-45 and Richmond on Dec 16th 99-73. Against Radford Asia Boone and Bella Smuda scored nine points to lead Liberty. Against Richmond Emma Hess led the Flames with 20 points and Boone chipped in with 15 points. On Dec 20th Liberty faced Grand Canyon at home winning 65-52 moving their record to 4-9. Smuda led Liberty with 24 points and 12 rebounds.

While he did not grow up here, he spent as much time as possible on the family farm, and eventually moved to Highland to continue the tradition, which he still pursues with his cousin.
