POCAHONTAS COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Pocahontas County Warriors girls’ varsity basketball team took part in the Rogers Oil Classic on December 19-20 at home defeating Summit Christian Academy 56-48 and Summers County 55-27 to remain undefeated at 5-0. Against Summit Christian Academy Calli Propst led the Warriors with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Allyson Taylor chipped in with 14 points, 11 rebounds and two steals, while Savanna Sharp tossed in 10 points along with three boards. Alexis Arbogast scored 8 points while Rylynn Barlow and Shayla Bennett added two points each. Against Summers County Sharp led the Warriors with 25 points and four rebounds. Arbogast chipped in with 14 points, two rebounds and four steals. Propst added eight points, three rebounds and five assists. Taylor scored four points but had a team high 11 rebounds along with two steals. Chloe Annett and Bennett both scored two points with Bennett adding five rebounds.
The Warriors boys’ varsity basketball team hosted the Highland County Rams on Friday December 19th losing 58-50 to open their season. The Rams moved their record to 6-0. Carter Vandevander and Ben Workman both scored 14 points for Pocahontas. The Rams were led by Zach Armstrong who scored 29 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out six assists, Patton Hull added 18 points and Elijah Good scored 11 points, grabbed 13 rebounds and blocked two shots.
HIGHLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Highland County Rams boys and girls middle school basketball teams hosted Green Bank on Friday December 19th. The Rams boys team lost to Green Bank 42-16 with Abram Lockridge scoring five points to lead the Rams, Creed Good scored three and Caynen Sampson, Jayden Serrett, Colton Lightner and Landon Lightner each had two points. The Rams girls lost 40-7 with Caston Lightner, scoring all seven points for the Rams.
The Rams girls’ varsity basketball team lost to the Bath County Chargers 43-26 on the road on Thursday December 18th moving their record to 0-1 in the Pioneer, 2-2 overall. The Chargers improved to 1-0 in the Pioneer, 3-3 overall. For the Rams Makynley Smith hit three threes enroute to scoring 11 points, Brooke Williams added six points, Adelaide Baxter scored four, Colleen Adams had three and Ameilia Good had two. For the Chargers Trinity Forbes scored 12 points and dished out three assists, Bre Mabe added 10 points, nine rebounds and three assists and Addie Lockridge added 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists. Ryleigh Phillips scored nine points, Cassie Thompson scored two and Macey Paxton had three assists.
The Rams boys’ varsity basketball team took care of business against Bath County on Thursday December 18th winning 64-33 on the road to remain undefeated at 1-0 in the Pioneer District. The Chargers fell to 0-1 in the Pioneer. Armstrong led Highland with 22 points, while Hull had 18 points and 11 rebounds and Good added 16 points and 14 rebounds. Preston Jaccard hit two threes for six points and Chase Lupo had two points. For the Chargers Luke Turner had 13 points and six rebounds and Nate Turner scored 12 points. Tommy Burke added four points with Miguel Rosado and Jeffrey Hamilton each added two.
The Rams middle school basketball team went on the road to face Union Educational on Wednesday December 17th in a co-ed setup. Highland’s boys played the first half, with the girls’ team playing the second half. The Rams boys won the first half 24-2 with Good and Sampson scoring seven points each. Landon Lightner added four points and Serrett, Colton Lightner and Lockridge each had two points. The Rams girls won the second half 15-3 with Lightner scoring eight points, Haven Wilfong added four points and Kennedi Hiner chipped in with three points.
BATH COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Bath County boys’ varsity basketball team hosted Boys Home on Friday December 19th winning 68-46 improving their record to 2-3. Luke Turner led the Chargers with 19 points, while both Rosado and Owen Perdue each scored 11 points. Nate Turner added nine points.
The Chargers wrestling team participated in the Bison Invitational held at Buffalo Gap High School on Saturday December 20th. The Chargers placed 11th out of 14 teams. Jesse Perry (150 pounds) and Azi Tyson (215 pounds) both finished third for Bath County, Tyler Shaver (285 pounds) placed fourth and A.J. Woodson (157 pounds) placed fifth.
TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES
UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA
The University of Virginia Cavaliers men’s #21 ranked basketball team hosted Maryland on December 20th winning 80-72 and American on December 22nd winning 95-51 to run their record to 11-1. Against Maryland Dallin Hall led Virginia with 20 points and Jacari White added 15. Against American five UVA players scored double figures led by Thijs De Ridder with 27 points.
The men’s wrestling team participated in a quad meet in Pennsylvania on December 21st. The Cavaliers picked up wins against Hofstra 29-9, Bucknell 19-18 and Morgan State 55-0. Against Hofstra UVA won eight of 10 bouts, against Bucknell the Cavaliers split 10 bouts and against Morgan State UVA won all 10 bouts. On December 22nd UVA wrestled Penn in a road match losing 24-16, moving their record to 8-3. The UVA grapplers picked up four wins out of 10 bouts against Penn.
The women’s basketball team hosted Winthrop on December 20th winning 88-53, moving their record to 9-3. Kymore Johnson led UVA with 41 points and Paris Clark added 11 points with 12 assists.
WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY
The West Virginia Mountaineers women’s basketball team hosted Houston on December 21st winning 101-46 improving their record to 11-2. Six Mountaineers scored double figures led by Sydney Shaw with 22 and Gia Cook with 17.
The men’s basketball team picked up a win against Mississippi Valley State on December 22nd winning 86-51, improving their record to 9-4. Four WVU players scored double figures led by Treysen Eaglestaff with 23 points.
JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY
The James Madison University Dukes men’s basketball team played a pair of road games this past week losing both to Old Dominion 77-68 on December 17th and Georgia Southern 96-92 in overtime on December 20th dropping their record to 7-6. Against Old Dominion Justin McBride led JMU with 24 points. Against Georgia Southern five JMU players scored double figures led by Bradley Douglass with 27 points.
The women’s basketball team split a pair of road games this past week, defeating Coastal Carolina 71-68 on December 17th and losing to Marshall 83-74 in overtime on December 20th, moving their record to 9-5. Against Coastal Carolina four JMU players scored double figures led by Zakiya Stephenson with 16 points.
VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY
The Virginia Tech Hokies men’s basketball team hosted Elon on December 20th winning 82-81 in overtime improving their record to 11-2. Five players scored double figures for Virginia Tech led by Amani Hansberry with 20 points and 14 rebounds.
The women’s basketball team played a pair of games this past week defeating Florida State on the road on December 18th winning 79-54 and defeating Radford 79-47 at home on December 21st, running their record to 11-3. Against Florida State four Tech players scored double figures led by Carys Baker with 21 points. Mackenzie Nelson added 18 points and 12assists while Mel Daley added 16 points and 10 rebounds.
VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE
The Virginia Military Keydets men’s basketball team went on the road to face Radford on December 21st losing 97-90, dropping their record to 5-8. Five VMI players scored double figures led by T.J. Johnson who scored 21 points.
The men’s wrestling team hosted Sacred Heart and Bloomsburg in a tri meet on December 20th. The Keydets defeated Scared Heart 22-13 and lost to Bloomsburg 26-11, moving their record to 4-3. Against Sacred Heart the VMI grapplers earned wins in six of 10 bouts while losing seven of 10 bouts against Bloomsburg.
