POCAHONTAS COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Warriors boys’ varsity basketball team played an away game at Moorfield on Dec 20th losing 55-46 dropping their record to 0-4.

BATH COUNTY SCHOOLS

The Chargers boys’ varsity basketball team played the James River Knights at home on Dec 21st, winning 60-46 moving their record to 4-6 for the season. Issac Ingram led Bath County with 19 points and six rebounds. Andrew Turner added 14 points and Luke Turner scored 12 points and grabbed nine boards off the glass. Wyatt Campbell contributed seven assists.

Bath’s JV boys’ basketball team lost to James River 42-29 dropping their record to 1-6. Dylan Hicklin scored 11 points for Bath and Miguel Rosado added 10.

HIGHLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS

After winning three games in a row the Highland County Rams boys’ varsity basketball team lost to Union Educational Thursday night Dec 21st 48-42 to even their record at 3-3. John Wagner scored 22 points and had eight rebounds to lead the Rams. Eli Moore contributed 10 points. Zach Armstrong added five rebounds, two assists and two steals with Patton Hull chipping in with three rebounds and three assists.

The Rams girls’ varsity basketball team had a tough one against Union Educational at home on Dec 21st losing 58-16 dropping their record to 0-4. Colleen Adams scored eight points to lead Highland while Zalea Good added six points on two three pointers.

TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES

VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE

The Virginia Military Keydets basketball team faced Penn State New Kensington at home on Dec 22nd winning 82-65 improving their record to 3-10. Four VMI players scored in double figures led by Tyran Cook with 17 points. Brennan Watkins and Taeshaud Jackson II scored 15 points each while Devin Butler added 14 points. Jackson II also had 14 rebounds.

JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY

The James Madison Dukes men’s basketball team remained undefeated at 12-0 after beating Morgan State at home on Dec 22nd 89-75. Terrance Edwards Jr scored 29 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead James Madison.

The women’s basketball team traveled to College Park, MD to face the Terrapins of Maryland on Dec 20th losing 78-55 dropping their record to 8-4. Peyton McDaniel led JUM in scoring with 25 points and eight rebounds.

James Madison’s football team faced Air Force in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl on Dec 23rd in Fort Worth, TX losing 31-21 to end their season at 11-2. The Dukes gave a great account of themselves over the course of the season but couldn’t handle the rushing attack from Air Force. Jordan McCloud of JMU completed 20-of-33 passes for 248 yards and three touchdowns with Alijah Sarratt catching eight of those passes for 115 yards and Phoenix Sproles catching five passes, two of them for touchdowns.

UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA

The Virginia Cavaliers women’s basketball team beat Fordham at home on Dec 21st 82-56 improving their record to 8-3. Kymora Jackson scored 26 points to lead the Cavaliers.

WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY

The West Virginia women’s basketball team remained undefeated at 11-0 Thursday night Dec 21st after beating Niagara at home 103-52. Five Mountaineers scored in double figures led by J.J. Quinerly with 18 points.

The men’s basketball team faced Toledo at home on Dec 23rd winning 91-81 improving their record to 5-7. RaeQuan Battle led the Mountaineers with 29 points and Akok Akok added 12 rebounds. Three other players scored in double figures for West Virginia.

VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY

The Virginia Tech Hokies men’s basketball team improved their record to 9-3 after defeating American at home on Dec 21st 77-55. Lynn Kidd had a great night scoring 31 points and grabbing 11 rebounds to lead the Hokies.

The women’s basketball team defeated William & Mary 76-43 at home on Dec 21st, improving their record to 9-2. Elizabeth Kitley scored 23 points and grabbed 17 rebounds to lead the Hokies and Olivia Summiel added 12 rebounds.

While he did not grow up here, he spent as much time as possible on the family farm, and eventually moved to Highland to continue the tradition, which he still pursues with his cousin.
