Soup, Socks and Sunshine

Valley Program for Aging Services, or VPAS is inviting the community to come together this winter through their initiative Soup, Socks and Sunshine, a seasonal donation drive designed to provide warmth, comfort, and connection to older adults in Highland and Bath counties.

The drive collects three simple but meaningful items: canned soup, new socks, and uplifting cards or notes. Together, these donations help meet practical needs while also brightening the spirits of seniors who may experience increased isolation and hardship during the colder months.

Donation items needed include:

  • Canned soupto provide warmth and nutrition
  • New men’s and women’s socks, a high-need item for comfort and warmth
  • Cards, drawings, or kind notesto offer sunshine, encouragement, and connection

Winter can be especially challenging for older adults. Soup, Socks and Sunshine offers a tangible way for community members to show care, helping seniors stay warm, nourished, and emotionally supported during the cold season.

Community members, businesses, schools, and organizations are encouraged to participate and help spread a little warmth and sunshine this winter.

Donations may be dropped off at the following locations:

In Highland County:

  • VPAS Office, 49 Spruce Street, Monterey, VA 24465
  • Highland County Public Library, 31 N. Water Street, Monterey, VA 24465

Scott Smith is the General Manager for Allegheny Mountain Radio and Station Coordinator and News Reporter for WVLS. Scott’s family has deep roots in Highland County. While he did not grow up here, he spent as much time as possible on the family farm, and eventually moved to Highland to continue the tradition, which he still pursues with his cousin. Unfortunately, farming doesn’t pay all the bills, so he has previously taken other jobs to support his farming hobby, including pressman/writer for The Recorder, and Ag Projects Coordinator for The Highland Center. He lives in Hightown with wife Michelle and son Ethan. In his spare time, he wishes he had more spare time, especially to ride his prized Harley-Davidson motorcycle. scott@amrmail.org
