Local Basketball Wrap-up
Mill Creek, WV – In local high school basketball action, defense was key for the Pocahontas Lady Warriors as they defeated the Tygarts Valley Lady Bulldogs in Mill Creek Tuesday night by a score of 59-36. Seniors Miranda McNabb and Erin White each had five steals and Heather Snead stole the ball four times. Chloe Bland led the Warriors with 16 points; McNabb sunk 12 points and freshman Tristin Day added 11 for the Lady Warriors. Next up for the Pocahontas Girls is a road game Thursday night at Richwood.
The Bath County Lady Chargers evened their record at 7-7 with a 42-23 victory over the Craig County Rockets Tuesday night. Jessie O’Connor led Bath County with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Alexa Faraone scored 10 points, including two three-pointers, and stole the ball five times. Melia Hutton led the Rockets with eight points and Jordan Persinger added 6 points for Craig. The Bath Girls improved their Pioneer District record to 2-2 with the win and jumped into third place with the win. Next up for the Lady Chargers is a Wednesday night game at Buffalo Gap.
The Highland County Lady Rams, missing two of their senior leaders due to injuries, fell to powerhouse James River Tuesday night in Monterey by a score of 70-28. The young Highland squad is fielding four freshmen and sophomores on their seven-girl roster. Kristin Vandevender led the Lady Rams with 10 points; Emily Botkin connected for eight points; Burgundy Hicks scored five and Ashley Hiner added three for Highland. Number five ranked James River improved their record to 13-3 with the win.
The Pocahontas County boys basketball team traveled to Baker Monday night to challenge their Potomac Valley Conference rivals the East Hardy Cougars. The Cougars took away a hard-fought 63-54 victory. Jed Sheets led the Warriors with 16 points; Dillon Kelley sunk 14 and Steve Halterman added 13 for Pocahontas. Pocahontas is now 5-4 overall and 2-2 in the conference. Jamie Miller led the Cougars with 21 points. The Warriors get a rematch with the Cougars at PCHS on February 4. The Warrior boys host Tygarts Valley Bulldogs tonight in Dunmore.
