Threat To Highland Schools Proven Not Credible

Speculation spread through Highland County Monday evening about a potential danger to the school system which was ultimately proven untrue.

A student had received a threat via their phone. Faculty was alerted, who then alerted the Highland County Sheriff’s Office, who responded to investigate. I spoke with the Sheriff David Neil and Deputy Bob Kelly this morning, and they were quick to point out that at no time was the school threatened, or students in danger, but that they take all threats seriously, especially when they involve the school system and students. The subsequent investigation revealed there had been no credible threat, and that one student was involved in the activity – the school system is dealing with the situation in-house. The school administration did ask the sheriff’s office to provide a presence Tuesday morning, both to re-assure concerned parents, and to underscore the seriousness of such actions to students. Sheriff Neil praised the actions of the school faculty in dealing with the issue.
