Highland Recreation Commission Summer Activities
Have you heard people say “There’s nothing to do in Highland County?” Catie King, from the Highland Country Recreation Commission is here to dispute that assertion.
“Well, I’m here to talk about all the awesome summer programs that the Rec Commission has going on.
“So this year, we have started up a Community Walking Club again, for four months. It will be going May through August, and it is not too late to join – we would love to have new members. We walk every Sunday at 2:00.
“We have new pool hours this year – Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 11:00 – 6:00; and then, the extended hours are now Tuesday and Saturday we are open from 11:00 – 9:00 pm; and then Sunday from 1:00 – 6:00.
“We still have our Family Fun Nights on Tuesday from 6:00 – 9:00, and we’re really excited about all the different themes that we have. Some of our Family Fun Nights are Cowboys and Indians Night – we even have a Fear Factor Night, which will be very interesting- Superheroes Night, Candyland Night. So when you come in for family Fun Night, it’s free admission – you can enjoy the festivities that we have going on, the decorations, usually either a game or snack for the kids, and some kind of activity, either in the pool or outside of the pool, including those games or snacks.”
It’s not all just fun at the pool though.
“We are offering some new exercise programs at the pool. We have Aqua Zumba, that will be on Mondays and Wednesdays from 6:00 – 7:00, and Aquarobics, which will be on Thursdays from 6:00 – 7:00. The price for admission on each one of those classes is $1.00. and we’re excited to also offer swim lessons for beginner swimmers from the 18th – 22nd of June, from 5:00 – 6:00 pm, and then at the end of the season, in August, we’re going to be offering swim lessons for future lifeguards, so that they can have a better understanding of what kind of test you have to go through to get your lifeguard certification. That will be August 16th and 17th from 6:00 – 7:00 pm.”
Enough about the serious stuff- let’s talk about fun again.
“The Summer Kick-off is happening this Saturday, on June 16th. We will have a bouncy house, lots of fun games going on for all ages, and we’ll have a sno-cone machine this year, so we’re excited to offer that with hot dogs, watermelon, all sorts of fun food and games. The summer Kick-Off is going to be happening at the pool complex, in the yard right outside the back, so that you have access to the pool as well, all day long.”
And there are more than just pool activities to take advantage of.
“Our Senior Fitness classes are still continuing on Mondays and Wednesdays at the Highland Medical Center, from 11:00 – 12:00. We also are going to have Campfire Nights with the library. We’re excited to have them on June 22nd and on August 17th, so this year we’re going to have two of them. We also have the Dr. Suess Week, with the library, for the week of July 16th– 20th, with lots of activities going on during that week, so be looking forward to that. And we also have our Highland Recreation gym, which is accessible – you can get a membership and a key and utilize the weight room on these rainy days or cold days.”
And, of course, later this summer, the big one – the Mountain Mama Bike Challenge.
“Mountain Mama is coming up in August – this is our 19th year of it, and we’ll be excited to do another story coming up mid-July, to tell more details about Mountain Mama, and how to register.”
“We have a lot of great events coming up, so we’re excited to share those with you guys. Be on the lookout – for more information, you can find it on the www.highlandcountyrecreation.org website, you can also go to our Facebook page, or you can give a call – 468-2978, or you can call the pool, 468-3866.”
