Hunters harvest 131,444 deer in W.Va. this season

West Virginia Division of Natural Resources Director Frank Jezioro reports that West Virginia hunters harvested a total of 131,444 white-tailed deer during the recently completed deer seasons. This year’s total harvest was three percent below the 2011 deer harvest of 135,696. Modern gun hunters bagged a total of 56,658 bucks and 45,169 antlerless deer. Bow hunters bagged 24,571 deer and muzzleloader hunters bagged 5,046 deer this season.
Preston County is the top county for overall deer harvest this season, with a harvest of 5,801 deer. Numbers two through 10, in order are Mason, Jackson, Randolph, Wood, Harrison, Greenbrier, Upshur, Lewis and Ritchie.
In Pocahontas County, 1,894 deer were harvested.
