Highland School Superintendent Resigns

Already lacking one member of its administrative staff following the passing of elementary principal Teresa Blum, the Highland School system will find itself short another in February.

In a meeting with faculty and staff following the school on Wednesday, Superintendent Dr. Thomas Schott made this announcement.

“The last eight years have been great here. Like I said, there’s no simple way for me to say this, so I’m just going to say it – I have resigned. My last day at work will be February 18^th.”

“I’m going to stay professional with the whole thing, and just say it’s time for me to go – that’s all I’m going to say. I’d appreciate it if you didn’t poke me about it, like I say, we’re going to leave it at that – it’s just time for me to go.”

“That’s all I really wanted to tell you. Like I said, there’s no easy way to say this – like I said, I love the people I work with, I love the community – it’s just time.”

When reached for comment, Highland School Board Chair Kenny Hodges and vice-chair Sherry Sullenberger both underscored the difficulty of dealing with this additional development in addition to the already pending tasks. Board member Joe Neil commented that he was sorry Dr. Schott had resigned.

The Board will likely address potential solutions at a work session planned for January 27^th. This will add to an already full agenda of items tabled at their last regular meeting, including the hiring of an elementary principal, salary levels and stipends for the upcoming school year, and the review of several school system policies. The work session is planned for 6:00 pm in the school cafeteria, with a regular business meeting to follow to take action on items if necessary.
