Highland Schools Off To A Good Start For The New School Year
Monterey, VA – The Highland County School Board heard about the start of the new school year at its meeting on September 12. The meeting was delayed due to the Labor Day Holiday. High School Principal April Goff made her report to the Board on some of the activities completed during the opening few weeks. She says as of September 7th the middle and high school total enrollment stood at 125.
Teresa Blum, Elementary School Principal, reported on the first two weeks for her students. She says will be doing Stanford 10 testing for grades 2,4, 6 and 8 the last week of September.
“We are participating in the fresh fruit and vegetable program where students from Pre-K to five get three vegetable or fruit snacks each week; and we are patronizing local farmers whenever possible,” she says.
Sara Ervin of the Highland Education Foundation attended the meeting to make their grant awards to teachers.
“The first check is for Marty Leech, and it is for the 4th grade field trip for Jamestown, Williamsburg; it’s an overnight trip, and that check is for $800.00,” she says. “The next check is for Margie Swanger, and she requested $418.41 for new Spanish teaching materials for her classroom. Steve Hevener requested $101.75 for his dairy judging team, some CD ROMS for that.”
The Education Foundation membership includes Teresa Blum, Caroline Botkin, Winnie Richardson, Lee Beasley, Caroline Smith, Tim Beasley, Tracy McRae, Sara Ervin and Caryn Brown.
