POCAHONTAS COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Warriors boys’ varsity soccer team hosted Notre Dame on Saturday September 6 th , earning their
first win of the season winning 1-0. Quincy Sharp scored for Pocahontas County. On Monday
September 8 th the Warriors boys traveled to Petersburg to win their second game of the season 5-2,
moving their record to 2-4.
The Warriors girls’ varsity soccer team hosted Robert C. Byrd on Saturday September 6 th , winning 1-0
and then beat Petersburg on the road 5-0, on Monday September 8 th , moving their record to 5-1-1 for
the season. Against Petersburg Erin Rider and Addy Hayes each scored two goals for Pocahontas with
Abby Bauserman adding one goal.
The Warriors boys’ varsity football team hosted Meadow Bridge on Friday September 5 th losing a close
one 18-12, moving their record to 0-2. Statistics were unavailable at this time.
BATH COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Bath County Chargers boys’ varsity golf team hosted the Eastern Montgomery Chargers in a
Pioneer District match at the Omni Homestead Old Course on Tuesday September 9 th . Atticus Stauffer
and Nathan Hunt both shot a 49 for the Chargers, Draven Stidham-Whitmore had a 52 and Akio Long
shot a 58.
The Chargers girls’ cross-country team took part in the Knights Crossing Invitational at Green Hill
Park in Salem, VA on Saturday September 6 th . Sophie Ailstock and Adrianna Miller, of the Chargers,
ran in the featured girls’ red race.
The visiting Chargers boys’ varsity football team took one on the chin as they were routed by the
Buffalo Gap Bison 50-0 on Friday September 5 th . The Bison had built a 36-0 lead at halftime. Ethan
Bryant, of the Chargers, left the game in the second quarter with a leg injury.
The Chargers girls’ varsity volleyball team went on the road to face Stonewall Jackson on Thursday
September 4 th winning 25-17, 25-14 and 25-18. Kenley Smith led the Chargers with 19 assists, 12 kills
and two blocks. Reaghan Pritt added 13 digs, six kills and four aces, Trinity Forbes had nine kills,
Embrie Hazelwood had 15 digs, and Cassidee Nicely added 14 digs. The Chargers JV volleyball team
also won 25-16, 25-21 for their second straight win. Shiann Chaplin had five assists and five digs,
Bailey Wolfe added six kills and four aces and Bre Mabe had five digs and four aces. Next up was
Buffalo Gap in a road match on Monday September 8 th with the Chargers girls’ varsity winning 25-21,
25-20 and 25-18 to remain undefeated at 3-0. Kenley Smith led the Chargers with seven kills, five
blocks, 14 digs and 28 assists. Hazelwood added 23 digs and five assists, Nicely had six kills along
with three aces, Forbes had 12 kills and Georgia Watkins added 12 digs. The Chargers JV team also
won to remain undefeated as well at 3-0 by taking down the Bison 25-16, 17-25 and 15-13. Mabe had
10 kills for the Chargers JV, Wolfe had eight assists, and Mackenzie Durney added five digs.
The Bath Chargers boys JV football team hosted the Buffalo Gap Bison on Wednesday September 3 rd ,
losing in their season opener 39-0.
HIGHLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Highland County Rams girls’ varsity volleyball team defeated Union Educational on the road 25-
18, 25-20 and 25-16 on Thursday September 4 th . Emma Brower had six kills, while Colleen Adams
added eight aces and four kills to lead the Lady Rams. Jade Hotz had four kills and three blocks,
Sarah Liller served six aces, and Virginia Richardson had three digs. The Rams JV volleyball team

started their season with a 25-15, 25-22 win against Union Educational in the first match of the night.
Kynley Smith had eight assists, seven aces and four kills to lead the Rams JV. Amelia Good and
Adelaide Baxter each had five kills, Lalea Mullins had eight assists, and Elanor White added six aces.
On Monday September 8 th the Rams girls’ varsity remained undefeated at 3-0, defeating Tygarts
Valley 25-13, 25-5 and 25-2 at home. Liller led the Lady Rams with 11 aces, Brooklyn Bussard added
nine, Adams had seven and Richardson had six. Emma Brower added four kills, Hotz had two kills
and Adams had five assists. The Rams middle school volleyball team opened their season by defeating
Tygarts Valley in the earlier game.
TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES
UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA
The University of Virginia Cavaliers men’s football team went on the road to play NC State on
September 6 th losing 35-31, dropping their record to 1-1. Chandler Morris went 30-for-43 passing for
257 yards and one touchdown while J’Mari Taylor added 150 yards rushing on 17 attempts and three
touchdowns to lead Virginia.
The men’s soccer team went on the road to play #8 Virginia Tech on September 5 th , coming away with
a 2-2 tie, moving their record to 3-1-1. Umberto Pela and Nicholas Simmonds scored for Virginia.
The women’s #8 soccer team hosted #9 Penn State on September 4 th winning 1-0, moving their record
to 5-0-1. Maggie Cagle scored for Virginia.
The women’s volleyball team hosted the Cavalier Classic on September 4-6. Virginia defeated VCU 3-1
and lost to Appalachian State 3-2. On September 9 th the Lady Cavaliers went on the road to face
Auburn losing 3-0 dropping their record to 4-2.
The women’s #3 ranked field hockey team remain undefeated at 3-0 after winning two games in the
Big Ten/ACC Challenge on September 5-7 in Ohio defeating #13 Ohio State 1-0 and #16 Rutgers 1-0.
Against Ohio State Catalina Quinteros scored for Virginia and against Rutgers Madison Orsi scored
for UVA.
WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY
The West Virginia Mountaineers men’s football team visited the Ohio Bobcats on September 6 th ,
coming away with a 17-10 loss dropping their record to 1-1. Nicco Marchiol went 15-for-26 for 178
yards passing and Jahiem White had 40 yards of rushing on six attempts and a touchdown to lead the
Mountaineers.
The men’s soccer team played a pair of games this past week losing to #13 Garder-Webb 1-0 at home
on September 3 rd and the defeating #22 George Mason 6-4 on the road on September 7 th moving their
record to 3-1-1. Against George Mason Pablo Pozos scored two goals while Juan Alvarez, Felix Ewald,
Sammie Walker and Marcus Caldeira each scored goals for West Virginia.
The women’s soccer team defeated Army at home 3-0 to move their record to 4-2 for the season.
Maddie Levy and Kailyn Effah scored goals while one was a team goal against Army.
The women’s volleyball team hosted the West Virginia Invitational on September 4-6. The
Mountaineers swept all three games defeating North Dakota 3-2, Liberty 3-1 and Coppin State 3-0 to
remain undefeated at 6-0.
JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY
The James Madison Dukes men’s football team visited Louisville on September 6 th losing 28-14 after
allowing 14 points in the fourth quarter. James Madison fell to 1-1. Alonzo Barnett III went 15-for-25

for 102 yards passing and one touchdown with Matthew Sluka adding 83 yards of rushing on 21
attempts and a score.
The women’s soccer team hosted the Fairfield by Marriott Invitational on September 4-7 defeating
Maryland 1-0 and losing to #23 North Carolina 3-0 moving their record to 4-2-2. Against Maryland
Ginny Lackey scored for JMU.
The women’s volleyball team hosted the LD&B Insurance Invitational on September 5-7. The Lady
Dukes won the first two matches beating Bellarmine 3-0, Princeton 3-1 and lost to Lehigh in the last
game 3-1 moving their record to 2-4.
The women’s field hockey team played three games this past week losing to #17 Liberty 4-1 on the
road on September 3 rd , defeating Richmond 2-1 in overtime in an away game on September 5 th , and
defeating American 4-1 on the road on September 7 th moving their record to 3-2. Against Liberty
Madelief Molier scored for JMU, against Richmond Skyler Brown and Julie Narleski scored for JMU,
against American Skyler Brown and Alice Roeper each scored two goals.
The men’s soccer team traveled to play Georgetown on September 9 th losing 4-0, dropping their
record to 0-4.
VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY
The Virgini Tech Hokies men’s football team hosted Vanderbilt on September 6 th losing 44-20 after
building a 20-10 halftime lead. Virginia Tech fell to 0-2 for the season. Kyron Drones went 17-of-29
for 134 yards passing and one touchdown and added 36 yards of rushing and another score to lead
Virginia Tech.
The men’s #8 ranked soccer team hosted Virginia on September 5 th playing to a 2-2 tie. Andy Sulins
and Amir Ariely scored for Virginia Tech. The men then hosted Furman on September 9 th playing to a
scoreless tie at 0-0 moving their record to 2-0-3 for the season.
The women’s soccer team traveled to face Old Dominion on September 4 th losing 2-1. On September
7 th Tech hosted William & Mary and played to a 3-3 tie moving their record to 4-2-2 for the season.
Against Old Dominion Ellie Robertson scored for Virginia Tech, against William & Mary Hannah
Pachan, Anna Weir and Taylor Wilson scored for Virginia Tech.
The women’s volleyball team participated in the Blue Hen Invitational on September 5-6 in Newark,
DE. The Lady Hokies won all three games defeating Hampton 3-0, Delaware 3-0 and Le Moyne 3-0
moving their record to 5-1 for the season.
VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE
The Virginia Military Keydets men’s football team trounced the Ferrum Panthers at home 42-7 on
September 6 th evening their record at 1-1. Collin Shannon went 15-for-27 passing for 223 yards and
three touchdowns to lead VMI. Noah Grevious and Aslin Shipe added one rushing touchdown apiece.
Malik McNeely caught four passes for 81 yards and a score.
The men’s soccer team traveled to play Liberty on September 4 th losing 3-0 and then hosted Saint
Peter’s on September 8 th losing 2-1 dropping their record to 1-4-1. Against Saint Peter’s, Andres
Fuentes-Ramos scored for VMI.
The women’s soccer team played a pair of games this past week losing to #3 Duke on the road 9-0 on
September 4 th and losing to USC Upstate 2-0 on September 7 th moving their record to 0-6-1.

Scott Smith is the General Manager for Allegheny Mountain Radio and Station Coordinator and News Reporter for WVLS. Scott’s family has deep roots in Highland County. While he did not grow up here, he spent as much time as possible on the family farm, and eventually moved to Highland to continue the tradition, which he still pursues with his cousin. Unfortunately, farming doesn’t pay all the bills, so he has previously taken other jobs to support his farming hobby, including pressman/writer for The Recorder, and Ag Projects Coordinator for The Highland Center.
