Hot Springs Fire Dept Offers First Responder Class In January
Hot Springs, VA – A First Responder Class is being offered at the Hot Springs Fire Department beginning in January. The First Responder class is the first level of training in the Emergency Medical Technician, or EMT, curriculum. The class is a good introduction to EMT training to give students an idea if they’d like to purse more classes. But the class teaches valuable skills even if you already know that you don’t want to be an EMT.
Before taking the First Responder class, you must have a specific type of CPR certification. It’s CPR for health care professionals. A CPR class that meets that requirement will be offered on Tuesday January 4th at the Hot Springs Fire Department at 6:30.
Mike Spurgeon is the Rescue Chief for the Hot Springs Rescue Squad and is an EMT intermediate. He has had hundreds of hours of training. He’s been a volunteer with the Hot Springs Rescue Squad since 1998.
The cost for the First Responder class is $85 plus a $50 testing fee. If you pass the class and join the Hot Springs Rescue Squad, the squad will reimburse you the cost. Spurgeon says he doesn’t want someone not signing up for the class because he or she doesn’t have the money for it up front. He says if you don’t have the money, he’ll try to work something out.
The First Responder class will be held at the Hot Springs Fire Department on Mondays and Wednesdays 6:30 to 10:30 pm from January 12 to February 17. The registration deadline for the class is December 31. For more information and to get details on how to sign up call Mike Spurgeon at 540-839-7271.
