Holmes Brothers Return To Garth Newel For Blues & Jazz Fest

Hot Springs, VA – The Holmes Brothers will be making their second appearance at the Virginia Blues and Jazz Festival Saturday at Garth Newel Music Center. The Holmes Brothers are Sherman and Wendell Holmes and brother in spirit, Popsy Dixon. The Holmes Brothers are originally from Virginia, starting out playing their music in the church and a cousins juke joint in Christ Church.

“We do the same thing we did then, gospel, blues, country – we call it American Roots music” says Wendell Holmes. “But we try to do it better now after fifty years of doing it.”

The Holmes Brothers have a new album, called Feed My Soul, produced by Joan Osborne. This album has special meaning for Wendell.

“Well, a big part of the inspiration and feeling that went into our latest album was due to my crisis and bout with bladder cancer in 2008” says Holmes. “It made me want to write music with more meaning. The title song Feed My Soul is a song that I wrote thinking of my wife in particular and my family in general just sticking with me through this crisis.”

The Virginia Blues and Jazz Festival is Friday through Sunday at Garth Newel Music Center. Other performers include Gerald Clayton, Marcia Ball, Ruthie Foster, Papa Grows Funk and the Bert Carlson Quartet. And there’s a New Orleans Jazz Brunch on Sunday with music by Hod O’Brien and Royce Campbell.
