POCAHONTAS COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Pocahontas County Warriors girls’ varsity softball team lost three games this past week losing to Tygarts Valley 17-2 at home on April 15th, Richwood WV 15-0 on the road on April 17th, and Webster County 16-3 at home on April 20th, dropping their record to 1-9 for the season.
The Warriors boys’ varsity baseball team lost to Webster County 8-2 at home on April 20th, dropping their record to 0-9.
HIGHLAND COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Highland County Rams boys’ and girls’ varsity track & field teams competed in the Rocktown Raptor Invitational on April 18th. The Rams girls placed ninth in the field of 21 schools. Brooke Williams led the way for the Rams finishing with three state qualifying marks in the 400-meters and the long jump. She also set two new school records in these events. The third qualifying mark was in the 4×100-meter relay, joined by teammates Adelaide Baxter, Amelia Good and Colleen Adams. Baxter also competed in the long jump. Luke Baxter competed for the Rams guys in the 800-meter run finishing fifth and the 1600-meter run finishing sixth.
The Rams boys JV baseball team lost to Bath County 17-13 on the road on April 17th dropping their record to 0-5. Bath County improved to 3-1. Mason Jerrells and Jace Armstrong each had two hits for the Rams while Elijah Blagg scored three times. Owen Honaker, Levi Warner and Armstrong pitched for Highland, walking five and striking out six. Miguel Rosado had three hits and scored three times to lead Bath County, while Parker Cauley, Truman Stewart, Michael Keyes, Wyatt Randozzo and Zach Foster each had two hits. Akio Long homered for the Chargers. Keyes, Stewart, Rosado, Jeffrey Hamilton and Cauley all pitched for the Chargers, combining for 11 strikeouts and 12 walks.
The Rams girls’ varsity softball team earned a 9-8 victory over Craig County at home on April 16th. Highland won after Colleen Adams scored on an error in the sixth inning. Adams had two hits for the day as did Ameila Good and Brooklyn Bussard. Good also collected two RBI and scored twice. Adams scored three runs and Smith scored twice. Sarah Liller pitched a complete-game win for the rams, walking four and striking out seven batters. The Rams defeated Bath County 13-9 on the road on April 17th. Colleen Adams had four hits to lead Highland, Makynley Smith had three and both Amelia Good and Kristina Neil each had two apiece. Adams had two RBI and scored three times. Good and Neil both had two RBI and Eleanor White scored three times. Sarah Liller pitched another complete game for the win, striking out six and walking one. Georgia Watkins had three hits for Bath County and scored three runs, while Trinity Forbes, Bailey Wolfe and Alyssa Ingram had two hits each. Forbes scored twice, while Wolfe and Makenna Randozzo and two RBI each. Cassidee Nicely pitched for Bath, striking out four and walking two. The Rams then met Tygarts Valley WV on April 21st losing 12-4 on the road dropping their record to 4-3 in the Pioneer, 4-6 overall.
The Rams girls middle school softball team lost to Covington Middle 18-3 on the road on April 16th. Caston Lightner and Martha Sweeney had hits for Highland. The girls met Bath at home on April 17th losing 22-9 dropping their record to 0-6. Bath County improved to 4-2. Caston Lightner had two hits, walked twice and scored three runs to lead Highland, Ashlyn Smith had two hits and Wren Cox scored twice. Lightner went the distance on the mound, striking out three and walking six. Shelby Sibold had four hits for the Chargers, Willow Morales had three and Atleigh Eye, Karlie Kirby, Leighton Statham and Kendall Huffman each had two hits. Eye, Sibold, Skyler Hickman, Statham and Morales each scored three times. Eye got the win for the Chargers striking out 10 batters, Sibold came on in relief in the fifth.
BATH COUNTY SCHOOLS
The Bath County Chargers girls’ varsity soccer team lost to Miller School 3-1 on the road on April 21st dropping their record to 0-4. Bath’s goalkeeper Elin Essex had 18 saves. Layken Young scored on a Kennedy Campbell assist. Earlier last week on April 15th the girls lost to Alleghany 1-0 on the road on April 15th.
The Chargers girls’ varsity tennis team faced James River on the road losing 6-3 on April 20th, dropping their record to 0-2 in The Pioneer, 2-6 overall. Brook Hess and Cassie Thompson won at No. 1 singles and No. 4 singles for Bath County plus combined for a win at No. 3 doubles.
The Chargers girls’ varsity softball team spilt a pair of games this past week picking up a win against Parry McCluer 13-8 at home on April 16th and losing to Richwood WV 8-7 on the road on April 20th moving their record to 2-4 in the Pioneer, 5-8 overall. Georgia Watkins was 3-for-4 for the game to lead Bath County against Parry McCluer, with two runs scored and four RBI. Cassidee Nicely and Addie Lockridge each had three hits while Trinity Forbes and Makenna Randozzo each had two RBI. Nicely earned the victory for Bath on the mound, striking out eight and walking two batters. Addie Lockridge had two hits and two RBI against Richwood and Chloe Forbes had a three run double. Cassidee Nicely took the loss on the mound, allowing four earned runs and striking out seven.
The Chargers boys middle school baseball team lost to Covington Middle 12-1 on the road on April 20th, dropping their record to 2-2. Kason Carson and Harper Campbell had hits for Bath County, with Cason Phillips, Wyatt Randozzo and Caleb Wolfe all saw time on the pitching mound.
The Chargers girl middle school softball team faced Covington Middle losing 19-6 on the road on April 20th dropping their record to 4-3. Atleigh Eye and Olivia Harris each had hits for the Chargers. Shelby Sibold and Eye both spent time on the pitching mound striking out five combined.
The Chargers boys’ varsity baseball team defeated Parry McCluer 16-9 earning their first district win of the season at home on April 16th. Gunnar Whiddon had two hits and four RBI to lead Bath County. Luke Turner and Owen Perdue each had two hits and scored three times with one of Owen Perdue’s hits being a double. Jake Boguess walked three times, scored four runs and stole four bases. Cade Perdue and Marc Durney each had two RBI. Dylan Hicklin picked up the win on the mound for Bath, giving up just one hit and one run in four and one thirds of an inning. The guys played Grace Christian on the road on April 17th, winning 6-5 moving their record to 1-2 in the Pioneer, 6-3 overall. Luke Turner and Owen Perdue each had two hits to lead Bath and Dylan Hicklin had two RBI. Cade Perdue and Nathan Hunt pitched for Bath, combining for 13 strikeouts and four walks. Perdue came on in relief, picking up the win for the Chargers.
The Chargers boys JV baseball team split a double-header with Parry McCluer on the road on April 16th. Bath County lost game one 6-5 and won game two 19-7. Michael Keyes had two hits for Bath in game one, while Miguel Rosado walked twice and scored a run. Jeffrey Hamilton, Wyatt Randozzo and Rosado all pitched for the Chargers, combining to strike out six and walk nine. In the nightcap Rosado went 4-for-4 with five runs scored and Keyes, Nate Turner and Randozzo all had home runs. Parker Cauley, Akio Long and Turner each had two hits. Long and Cauley combined pitching duties for Bath walking nine and striking out seven.
TURNING TO AREA COLLEGES
UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA
The University of Virginia Cavaliers men’s #9 ranked baseball team hosted Clemson in a three-game series on April 16-18, winning games one and three 6-4 and 5-4, while losing game two 5-1, dropping their record to 28-13.
The men’s #11 ranked lacrosse team hosted #3 North Carolina on April 18th losing in overtime 16-15 dropping their record to 7-6. Brendan Millon scored three goals and had three assists to lead Virginia.
The men’s #4 ranked tennis team participated in the ACC Championships on a neutral site on April 17-19. Virginia defeated Cal 4-3, #24 Notre Dame 4-1 and lost to #7 Wake Forest 4-2 in the championship match, falling to 22-4.
The men’s and women’s track & field teams hosted the Virginia Challenge on April 16-18. The UVA men placed first in the 10000-meter run, 3000-meter run invite and the 5000-meter invite, second in the hammer invite. The UVA women placed first in the 1500-meter invite and the high jump invite, second in the hammer and third in the 400-meter hurdles and hammer invite.
The women’s golf team participated in the ACC Women’s Gold Championship on April 16-17 in North Carolina. The UVA women placed ninth out of the 14 teams competing.
The women’s #21 ranked lacrosse team went on the road to face Virgina Tech on April 16th, winning 13-10 to boost their record to 8-8. Kate Galica scored five goals to lead Virginia.
The women’s #23 ranked softball team went on the road to face Clemson in a three-game series on April 17-19 losing all three games 12-4, 3-1 and 6-1. The Cavaliers then lost to James Madison 9-7 at home on April 21st dropping their record to 33-12.
The women’s #7 ranked tennis team participated in the ACC Championships on April 17-19 in North Carolina. Virginia defeated Stanford 4-1, #18 Duke and lost to #13 NC State 4-0 in the championship game, falling to 21-5.
WEST VIRGINIA UNIVERSITY
On April 15th, the West Virginia Mountaineers men’s baseball team secured a 3-1 victory over Penn State on the road. Subsequently, they hosted Houston for a three-game series from April 17-19, winning games two and three with scores of 7-1 and 7-3, respectively, after dropping the first game 10-7. The Mountaineers were then defeated by Pitt 23-1 at home on April 21st, resulting in an updated record of 27-10.
The women’s track & field teams participated in the Bryan Clay Invitational on April 16-18 and hosted the Mountaineer Showcase on April 17th. In the Bryan Clay Invitational WVU placed third in the 5000-meter run. In the Mountaineer Showcase WVU placed first in the 100-m dash, 400-m hurdles, 800-m run, 1500-m run. Second place finishes were in the 100-m hurdles, 200-m dash, 400-m dash and long jump. Third place finishes came in the 200-m dash, 400-m ash, 800-m run and 1500-m run.
JAMES MADISON UNIVERSITY
The James Madison University Dukes men’s baseball team hosted Appalachian State in a three-game series on April 17-19 losing all three games 10-0, 19-10 and 14-10, then went on the road to face George Mason losing 7-4 on April 21st dropping their record to 16-23.
The women’s track & field team participated in the Virginia Challenge on April 16-18. The JMU women placed third in the high jump.
The men’s tennis team participated in the Sun Belt Conference Championship on April 17th, losing in the first round to Georgia Southern 4-2 ending their season at 13-8.
The women’s lacrosse team defeated Vanderbilt 14-9 at home on April 18th, raising their record to 10-6. Olivia Matthews and Jordan Peterson both scored three goals and had two assists to lead JMU.
The women’s softball team defeated Georgetown 4-3 on the road on April 15th then went on the road to Appalachian State for a three-game series on April 17-19 winning game two 9-3 but losing games one and three 5-2 and 10-9. James Madison then faced #23 Virginia on April 21st winning 9-7 improving their record to 22-22.
The women’s tennis team lost to Appalachian State 4-1 on the road on April 17th, dropping their record to 11-10.
VIRGINIA TECH UNIVERSITY
The Virginia Tech Hokies men’s baseball team hosted Pitt in a three-game series on April 17-19 winning games on and three 11-6 and 6-5 but lost the second game 5-4. The guys then defeated VCU 8-6 on the road on April 21st improving their record to 20-19.
The men’s tennis team lost in the first round of the ACC Championships held in North Carolina to North Carolina 4-0 on April 15th, ending their season at 6-16.
The men’s and women’s track & field teams participated in the Virginia Challenge on April 16-18. The VT women placed first in the 5000-meter invite and 3000-meter invite and second in the 1500-meter run. The VT men placed third in the 5000-meter invite.
The women’s golf team competed in the ACC Women’s Golf Tournament held in North Carolina on April 16-19, placing eighth out of 15 teams.
The women’s lacrosse team lost to #20 Virginia 13-10 at home on April 16th, moving their record to 9-8. Lauren Render, Mia Pozzi and Sarah Murrell each scored two goals for Virginia Tech.
The women’ #10 ranked softball team defeated Liberty 9-0 on the road on April 15th before hosting Georgia Tech in a three-game series on April 17-19 winning game one 10-2 before losing game two and three 6-2 and 9-7 moving their record to 38-8.
The women’s tennis team lost in the second round of the ACC Championship in North Carolina to Stanford 4-2, ending their season at 5-17.
VIRGINIA MILITARY INSTITUTE
The Virginia Military Keydets men’s baseball team hosted Western Carolina in a three-game series on April 17-19 winning game one 10-8 but lost games two and three 18-5 and 4-3. VMI then went on the road to face Longwood losing 10-4 on April 21st dropping their record to 26-14.
The men’s lacrosse team hosted Wagner on April 18th winning 13-6 to even their record for the season at 6-6. Both Dayton Bagwell and Jack Duncan-Bloom scored hat tricks for VMI.
The men’s and women’s track & field teams competed in the UVA Challenge on April 18th.
