A/C Projects at Marlinton Middle and Elementary Schools Over 80% Complete but Delayed

Pocahontas County School Superintendent Lynne Bostic announced at the August 29th meeting that the air conditioning projects at both Marlinton Elementary School and Marlinton Middle School are over 80% complete, however both projects are delayed until mid-to late November, awaiting delivery of electrical boxes.

During her Superintendent’s Report, Bostic also informed the board members that the schools will be participating in the Emergency Management Planning Committee’s Tabletop emergency planning scenarios exercise on September 17th.

Additionally, Bostic said they are working with the Family Resource Network to form a county-wide Family Advisory Committee.

Bostic also wanted to recognize all the people who helped install the new flooring in the PCHS Library.

The board received a financial report from the school’s Treasurer, Sherry Radcliff, in which she said the schools are planning a trip to Congress in Washington DC to try to obtain funding for the SRS, or as Radcliff put it “to light a fire under them” to get that forest money funded.

The board gave consent approval of routine financial matters and reports, which also included moving about $30,000 out of their contingency fund to pay for the local match on a $137,000.00 Connective Grant to replace the Wi-Fi systems at the four schools which have Wi-Fi (Green Bank School does not have Wi-Fi due to the Green Bank Observatory Quiet Zone restrictions.)

They also approved the Groundwater Protection Plan for Small business.  This plan is required by the WV DEP, and it’s purpose to make businesses aware of potential situations that can cause groundwater contamination on their property, and to require that businesses identify these situations and remedy them.

The board approved a memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Project for Educational Research that Scales (PERTS,) the purpose of which is to equip and train teachers and staff to foster student engagement and accelerate learning through using a research -based professional learning model.

The board also approved the following:

  • To grant an out-of-state travel request for Anita Workman, Wanda Hrabina, and Aron Pugh, Teachers of Social Studies and a group of up to 40 students to travel by bus on on September 27, 2023 for a day trip to Montpelier Station Virginia for a tour.
  • Addition of a golf tournament to the list of approved fundraisers for Marlinton Middle School.
  • Acceptance of the bid from The Mountain Steer Meat Co. to provide beef for the upcoming school year. That company also supplies beef to the Greenbrier and Monroe Schools.

They also approved a professional and Service Personnel Agenda, which can be found below.
