Pocahontas County
Pocahontas County was established in 1821 and named for the Indian Princess Pocahontas, an ancestor of then-governor Thomas Mann Randolph. Land was ceded from Bath, Randolph, Pendleton, and later, Greenbrier counties to form the new county.
Pocahontas County is one of the largest in West Virginia, with a total of 943 square miles. However, with fewer than 9,000 inhabitants it is among the least populated counties.
Pocahontas County is also known as “The Birthplace of Rivers”, with eight waterways beginning their journey to the sea in the county border: the Greenbrier, Gauley, Elk, Cherry, Cranberry, Tygart, Williams, and Shavers Fork of the Cheat.
Snowshoe Mountain Resort makes its home in Pocahontas County. The four-season resort has become the number one destination resort for a large portion of the East Coast skiing population.
The National Radio Astronomy Observatory is home to the world’s largest adjustable radio telescope, the Robert C. Byrd Telescope. Green Bank lies within the National Radio Quiet Zone, one of the reasons the Observatory is located here, and why it is hard to pick up radio stations on the car radio.
The Pocahontas County Convention and Visitors Bureau (PCCVB) is an independent, nonprofit corporation dedicated to marketing and promoting Pocahontas County as a destination for leisure and group travel. Its mission includes providing appropriate services for visitors and residents and educating the public as to the benefits of tourism and tourism-based economic activity. PCCVB operates a year-round on from its office on Second Avenue in Marlinton and seasonal Visitor’s Centers at the Cranberry Mountain Nature Center, at the National Radio Astronomy Observatory in Green Bank, in the Cass Country Store and in the restored Durbin Depot.
