Allegheny Arts Calendar for June 29 – July 4th, 2022

Here are some of the art and cultural events happening in our area this week.

First Friday, July 1st at the Discovery Junction in downtown Marlinton offers fun and activities for children of all ages and adults too!  The Jesse Milnes band will provide a musical back drop with music that’s a mix of county and old-time with a little rock and roll.  Roy Moose will have a live demonstration of snakes native to WV.  Marlinton UMC and Pocahontas County libraries will have various hands-on crafts for the kiddies and artist Peggy Owens will demonstrate her unique painting and jewelry making skills.  The event is at the outdoor pavilion next to the Opera House Friday from 5 to 8pm.

Garth Newel hosts Sycthian on Saturday July 2nd.  Named after Ukrainian nomads, Sycthian plays roots music from Celtic, Eastern European and Appalachian traditions. A high energy band with lots of technical prowess, they provide great storytelling with a combined barn-dance/rock concert experience.  Garth Newel will have a picnic at 6pm, followed by the concert at 7:30pm.  You may visit www.garthnewel.org for ticket prices and availability.  Tickets will only be available through Friday, July 1st.

Independence Day celebrations kick off on Saturday, July 2nd at Snowshoe Mountain Resort with the Homegrown Music Festival and a fireworks display that evening at dusk.  More information at www.snowshoemtn.com.

The Homestead in Hot Springs will also host a variety of Independence Day events July 1st through the 4th, including fireworks displays.  More information is available at www.omnihotels.com/hotels/hot-springs.  Click on Experiences on the homepage, then click on Upcoming events.

If you don’t mind a short road trip, The Parrots of the Caribbean, a Jimmy Buffet Tribute Band, will be in concert at Theatre West Virginia’s Cliffside Amphitheater in Grandview on Sunday, July 3rd at 7:30pm.  The amphitheater is part of the New River Gorge National Park near Beckley, WV.  Tickets for the show are $22.00.  This concert is part of the 2022 summer concert series.  There is more information at www.theatrewestvirginia.org.

On Monday, July 4th, the 21st annual reading of the Declaration of Independence will be at Noon in front of the Pocahontas County Courthouse on 10th Avenue in Marlinton.  They will also have information about the document and free watermelon.

The Town of Marlinton will have their Independence Day celebration from 4 to 8pm at Discovery Junction with free watermelon and ice cream.  Contests for kids begin at 4:30pm and include parasol judging, bubble gum blowing and cracker eating/whistle blowing.  Music entertainment by the bands Gilt and Cold Ethyl.

And the annual Blue Grass Ruritan 4th of July Parade and Lawn Party is Monday.  The parade begins at 5pm with the lawn party to follow with music and games.  Food and beverages will also be available.

Heather is our Program Director and Traffic Manager. She started with Allegheny Mountain Radio as a volunteer deejay. She then joined the AMR staff in February of 2007. Heather grew up in the Richmond, Virginia, area and now lives in Arbovale, West Virginia with her husband Chuck. Heather is a wonderful flute player, and choir director for Arbovale UMC. You can hear Heather along with Chuck on Tuesday nights from 6 to 8pm as they host two hours of jazz on Something Different.
