Bath County Schools Rally to Support Narrows After Hurricane Helene

In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, Giles County is reeling from significant damage, with over 40 buildings destroyed. Particularly hard-hit was the town of Narrows, just west of Pembroke. Despite communities along the New River being drenched, the worst damage came from flooding that followed the storm on Friday. This storm capped off a week of relentless rain, totaling over 10 inches in parts west of Interstate 77.

Wind gusts, some exceeding 60 mph, wreaked havoc for six to eight hours in places like Hillsville and Grayson Highlands State Park, toppling thousands of trees and cutting power to the region.

In response, Bath County’s three schools are stepping up to support. Valley Elementary School Principal Michelle Eldredge and Counselor Katie Mihaly are spearheading the local effort to help provide relief for the Narrows community as they recover from this devastation. Follow the link for the full interview with Mrs. Eldredge and Mrs. Mihaly, where they discuss the plans and how you can help.
