Bath County Teen Dies in Auto Accident

Burnsville, VA – In Bath County, a fifteen year old boy died early Saturday morning as the result of an auto accident. Joseph “Joey” Roberts was a passenger in a 1999 Chevrolet Silverado that struck a tree about 5:30am Saturday on Route 609 north of Burnsville. Joey Roberts lived in Burnsville. He was a sophomore at Bath County High School and a junior member of the Burnsville Volunteer Fire Department.

According to Virginia State Police, the truck’s sixteen year old driver veered off the road and struck a tree. The driver was transported to Roanoke Memorial Hospital and is expected to make a full recovery. Charges are pending against the driver, who was not identified by police because of his age.

Toxicology tests are pending, but police say the preliminary investigation does not indicate that drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash. Police say speed may have been a factor.

Joey Roberts funeral will be held Wednesday October 12th at 2pm at Obaugh Funeral Home in McDowell.
