Hot Springs, Va. –
A Grand Jury in Bath County has indicted John “Jay” Batley on embezzlement charges. On January 22, Batley was indicted on 162 counts of embezzlement and one charge of grand larceny. All are felonies.
Batley is a former co-director at Camp Mont Shenandoah in Millboro. Camp Mont Shenandoah is a summer camp for girls that was founded in 1927. Batley became a co-director there in 1996.
The charges involve some Camp Mont Shenandoah accounts that Batley used for personal expenses. The total dollar amount from all the charges is over $400,000.
According to Bath’s Commonwealth’s Attorney Chris Singleton, the criminal investigation is ongoing. Batley remains free on bond and Singleton says there are no recommendations that the bond be changed. Batley was arrested in mid October.
