Camp Accovac To Host First Limitless Day Of Fun For Special Needs Adults At No Cost

Camp Accovac in Millboro will hold its first Limitless Day of Fun on August 22nd for special needs adults, offering a slew of camp activities for participants to enjoy at no cost.

The camp, located at 33021 Mountain Valley Road, will hold its “Limitless Day” from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event is for adults with special needs and participants must have a responsible adult on site

For camp volunteer, Lynette Lewis, the event will be like taking a stroll down Memory Lane.

As a student, Lewis spent her summers volunteering as a cook at the camp. Flash forward to today, and Lewis proudly says she is now the mother of a special needs son named Eddie, who is 27 years old.

Lewis, the brain-child of the event, approached her longtime camp friend who now manages operations at the camp, and suggested holding the adults with special needs event. Immediately, she said, camp officials were on board.

Camp activities for the day will cover the needs of all participants based on their capabilities. They include fishing, swimming, zip lining, volleyball, basketball, canoeing, cornhole, horseshoes, carpet ball and board games.

Lewis says she is not aware of any other local camps offering events for special needs adults. Camp Horizon in Rockingham County used to host Special Olympics events but those are no longer offered.

Lewis explains the goals for the event are to get attendees outdoors to enjoy the activities and socialize.

“We’ll have people from younger people all the way up to people in their 50’s and I know there are some that are in their 60s. It’s a very wide range of ages, but they are all adults,” Lewis says.

“I think Camp Accovac is looking at maybe doing this for children, but we wanted something where adults could meet each other because, a lot times, their kind of lonely. We’re hoping people can meet some new friends. You know, people to hang out with,” Lewis adds.

Preregistration is encouraged by going to Camp Accovac’ s Face Book page.  But Lewis said attendees may also register the day of the event between 9 and 10a.m.

There is no rain date, but the camp will have plenty indoor activities should the raindrops fall.

Any adults who care to volunteer for the day-long event may also apply through the camp’s Face Book page.

And, Lewis says, attendees must pack a picnic lunch and bring a drink. She adds there is no need to bring a cooler as refrigeration for food or medications will be available.
